Cadets fall despite Hibbard hat trick

Hilton spotted visiting Fairport a 10-3 lead at halftime and a 13-3 advantage through the first six minutes of the second before their late rally fell short in a 16-10 loss in girls lacrosse.

Senior Amanda Hilderbrandt scored off a pass from sophomore Sydney Carpenter when the Cadets won the opening draw for a 1-0 lead, but Fairport scored the next eight goals in the contest.

Hilton freshman Fiona French netted two goals, both with Carpenter assisting, but the Red Raiders countered with five more over the last ten minutes of the first and opening of the second half to build their lead.

The Cadets rallied, scoring three straight and four of the next five as junior Logan Hibbard tallied her first hat trick of the season – the last coming on the fifth shot of the offensive possession – and senior Meaghan McGwin scored once to cut the Fairport lead to 14-7.

But the Red Raiders dashed any hopes of a comeback with three straight tallies before Hilton’s Carpenter completed a break by converting freshman Danielle Mojsej’s pass and the latter scored an assist from Hilderbrandt in the final 73 seconds.

“We just had to relax,” Hibbard said about her team’s second half performance. “We knew forcing the ball every time wasn’t going to work, so we just needed to possess the ball and work it around on offense.”

Senior Shaina Doser made 11 saves, Hibbard added seven ground balls and five caused turnovers to her team-leading three goal effort while French finished with two goals and two assists and Carpenter four assists for the 2-3 Cadets.
