Lee double-double leads Blue Devils

Brockport senior Shamar Lee scored 20 points and hauled down 11 rebounds while seniors Ethan Schalge and Troy Leibert combined for 30 more points to lead them to an 86-67 victory over visiting Spencerport in boys basketball.

The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Lee hit a three-pointer and a lay-up while Leibert added a lay-up and a free throw. They extended their lead to 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Leibert opened the second stanza with consecutive baskets to make it a 17-point advantage before the Rangers found some offensive rhythm from their bench.

Senior Alex Anderson began the run with a trey and junior Gianni Pellett added consecutive three-pointers to cut the Blue Devils lead to eight and open up their inside game. Rangers junior Patrick Uebelacker knocked down three field goals over the rest of the quarter, but both teams scored 22 points over eight minutes so Brockport took their 13-point lead into halftime.

Spencerport outscored the Blue Devils 18-14 in the third quarter as Pellett hit a reverse lay-up and three-pointer to cut the lead to nine, but the Rangers could get no closer as Brockport senior Sam Velletri opened the fourth quarter with a trey and junior Owen Gardner came off the bench to score all seven of his points with Lee adding five points and Schlage four free throws down the stretch.

“We were trying to match what they were doing, but when you fall behind double-digits behind Brockport, it’s tough to climb back in it,” Spencerport head coach Rich Vleck said. “We were able to get some looks that opened it up a bit more, it just took a while to get there. We scored 67, that should win our games, but defensively we need to be better in the half-court set to be able to win a game.”

“That’s (offense) has been what we’ve been lacking and we’ve been for that and finally it happened so we’re happy,” Brockport head coach Tom Velletri said. “Attack, make them pull out and attack and then hit the cutter from the corners.”

In addition to Lee’s 20 points and 11 rebounds, Schlage led with 21 points and added three assists, Leibert scored 19 points all in the paint to go with seven rebounds and three steals, Gardner finished with 7 points, Velletri nine points and senior point guard Oscar Vandetta had four assists.

Spencerport was paced by Pellett and Uebelacker netting 17 points each with Anderson scoring nine and senior Mike Contestabile eight.
