Notice to southern Ogden residents

THIS IS A NOTICE TO ALL THE SOUTHERN OGDEN RESIDENTS
The Spencerport Fire Department has not publicized the fact that they are taking over territory that was covered by the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department. Their excuse is “well you should have gone to the Spencerport Fire Department District meetings on the subject.” Unfortunately the notices had NO clue as what was to be covered in the meetings.

As of January 01, 2024 the Spencerport Fire District has taken over all the territory north of Bunny Run. At the end of last year they took over the Ogden territory down Washington Street up to and including Whittier Road, Town Pump Circle, Osage Trail, Euler Road and Stony Point Road.

This year they extended the area to Bunny Run which includes Dewey Street and Westside Drive.
In the past all of these areas were covered by the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department. The response time from the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department on Washington Street for a majority of these areas was two to three minutes. The distance from the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department to Dewey Street is approximately two miles.

The distance from the Spencerport Fire Department house No.1 to Dewey Street is eight miles. Spencerport Fire Department house No.1 to the outer limits of the Spencerport Fire Department which includes Bangs Road and a portion of Mcintosh Road is now ten miles. A response from Spencerport Fire Department house No. 3 would be 2 miles less.

These are response times that do not include getting a crew to the firehouse from the time of dispatch and on the road.

The Spencerport Fire Department is now relying on mutual aid from the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department to cover these areas.

The main reason that the Spencerport Fire Department chose to expand its territory comes down to money. They no longer wanted to pay the Town of Riga and the Village of Churchville the $15,000 for this coverage.

How quickly can a fire spread?
How Fast Does Fire Spread? 30 seconds. It takes all of 30 seconds for a manageable fire to turn into something that is dangerous and fast-moving. Synthetic materials, wood, wall hangings and countless other factors can accelerate the spread, giving even less time to stop the fire before it spreads. After about a minute, smoke — the largest cause of fire-related deaths — begins to fill the room, spreading as rapidly as the flames. It takes, on average, about five minutes for an entire home to become completely engulfed. Commercial buildings, however, can take a little longer, due to their size.

DOUBLING TIME
Doubling time is the parameter generally used for characterizing rate of fire growth. This is the time for fire to double in size and is a constant for the exponential model of fire growth. For example, if it takes 5 minutes for the area damaged to increase from 215 Sq, Ft to 430 Sq Ft it will also take 5 minutes for the damage to increase from 430 Sq Ft to 860 Sq Ft and 860 Sq Ft to 1700 Sq Ft and so on.

So you see that adding 8 minutes of valuable time to a response can mean the loss of the entire structure and lives.
