Brockport village budget up, but within tax cap

The 2015/16 Village of Brockport budget comes in under the tax cap, but includes a small increase in the tax rate – from $11.80/$1,000 assessed valuation to $11.88/$1,000. Village officials say that’s a .62 percent increase from last year.

Water and sewer rates remain the same under the budget for the new fiscal year which runs from June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016.

Village trustees unanimously adopted the $5.14 million budget at their April 20 meeting.

In a breakdown of the 2015-16 budget by department, public safety comprises 31.35 percent or $1,612,830, that’s up from $1,411,075 in the 2014-15 adopted budget; employee benefits comprise 28.39 percent or $1,459,795; and the Department of Public Works comprises 19.69 percent or $1,012,378, that’s down from $1,046,320 in the 2014/15 adopted budget.

According to a powerpoint presentation on the budget under central administration, municipal court costs increased just over 13 percent, from $61,440 in the 2014/15 adopted budget to $69,649 in the 2015/16 budget.

The mayor will receive $9,867/year under the new budget and each of the  four village trustees will receive $3,444/year. There is no change in their compensation from the previous fiscal year.

During a public hearing on the budget held April 6, Village Treasurer Daniel Hendricks said the Village Board should be proud of accomplishing fiscal responsibility with a balanced budget and their work towards long term planning. He said board members did a “commendable job.”

Mayor Blackman noted at that meeting that although Monroe County Water Authority rates have increased, the village is not passing that increase along to residents. Hendricks reported the DPW superintendent is confident the rates are, “where they need to be.”
