Every year in observance of Arbor Day, the Town of Greece plants a tree to both honor a member(s) of the community and to promote the importance of trees for our environment. The Town of Greece has been named a Tree City USA every year since 1998.
On April 29, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Mike Barry, Bill Murphy, and Mike Bloomer for the Annual Town of Greece Arbor Day Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony. This year’s tree was planted in memory of past Greece Volunteer Ambulance (GVA) members.
The tree planted this year was an Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac. This tree features dark green foliage throughout the season and produces white blossoms in early summer. The tree is located along the walking track on the north end of the Greece Town Campus. The monument that is placed at the base of the tree was provided by GVA.
“Today, we were proud to honor past members of the Greece Volunteer Ambulance” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “With GVA headquarters no longer in the Town of Greece, a part of the history can be seen and appreciated by every resident who visits the Greece Town Hall Campus. We appreciate the service GVA has provided the Town of Greece over the past 60 years – and in particular the dedicated service of those individuals who are no longer with us.”
Greece Volunteer Ambulance began operation in 1959 at 867 Long Pond Road. In July of 2019, the GVA and CHS Board of Directors voted to merge their operations and close the Long Pond Road base.
