RPO ends season on a triumphant note
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) will close its 2021-22 Season next month with two major Philharmonics concerts, beginning with a revised program for Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 4 at 8 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre: Mahler’s “Titan.” A pre-concert talk in Kodak Hall starts one hour prior to each performance.
With the challenges of ever-changing COVID-19 prevention and distancing protocols in Eastman Theatre, presenting the originally scheduled Mahler: The Resurrection Symphony – which requires close to 150 performers on stage – is not possible at this time. Instead, RPO Music Director Andreas Delfs closes out his inaugural season with a program that features what would have essentially been the 2022-23 Season closer. The revised program opens with Carl Maria Von Weber’s overture to his opera, Oberon, and closes with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, “Titan.” Mahler was just 28 at the time he composed his first symphony.
“Mahler’s First Symphony is bursting with the unbridled creativity of youth, as yet undeterred by criticism,” explains Maestro Delfs. “It is an exciting way to end this season, and the orchestra and I look forward to Mahler’s Second Symphony closing out next season instead.”
Rescheduled from January’s closure of Eastman Theatre (and originally entitled Danzmayr Returns) is Tchaikovsky + Rodrigo on Thursday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 11 at 8 p.m. in Kodak Hall. Music Director of both the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the American Youth Symphony Carlos Izcaray leads a program that opens with Icarus by contemporary Russian composer Lera Auerbach. Next up is rising-star Korean guitarist JIJI (Jiji Kim) performing Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra in her RPO debut. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, a staple in the orchestral repertoire, closes out this program. A pre-concert talk begins one hour prior to each performance.
Tickets start at $30 for adults and are available online anytime at rpo.org, by phone at 454-2100 (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and in person 60 minutes prior to curtain at the Eastman Theatre Box Office (433 East Main Street). Tickets for children ages 3-17 start at $18 and are available by phone only.
Patrons aged five and up are required to show proof of COVID vaccinations and must wear masks during the entire performance. Venue capacity is at 100%.
