Memorial Day observed in Brockport

Over 200 people gathered at the Brockport Area Veterans Club on West Avenue in Brockport on May 28 at 11 a.m. amidst the clouds providing a light misty rain. The rain subsided, and the clouds moved on as Patricia Connors, Mistress of Ceremonies and member of the Legion Auxiliary, took to the podium to welcome the crowd and provide opening remarks. Ms. Connors was followed by local Boy Scouts presenting our Nation’s Colors as the Brockport High School (BHS) Band played the Star Spangled Banner.

Veteran Roy Heise provided insights and prayer about what this weekend is all about as he gave the Invocation and later the Benediction. Veteran Sharon Chaplain conducted the ceremony and members of the American Legion Auxiliary placed a red, white, and blue wreath at the base of the American Flag while she did.

Colonel David Young, US Army (Retired), presented the Keynote Address. He spoke of service, loss, and remembering the fallen. Local Army Veteran Arden Campbell was recognized as the oldest living Veteran in attendance, having joined the Army in 1957. The Scouts retired colors as Ms. Connors offered her closing remarks. The BHS Band continued to play a mini-concert following the ceremony.
