Local food shelf filled with more than 500 food items during “Souper Bowl Challenge”

Cub Scouts in Pack 228 Den 3 help out with “Souper Bowl” collection.Super Bowl 2013 took on a whole new meaning when Jessica DeToy, Brockport High School senior and member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Brockport, launched the second annual “Souper Bowl Challenge” in February, calling for St. Luke’s parish and the greater Brockport community to support the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf by donating 300 non-perishable food items – double that of the 2012 challenge.

“Our goal this year was to collect 300 items for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf to double our first-ever Souper Bowl Challenge of 150 items in 2012. In the end, we collected 541 items this year. This includes 60 items from the “World Yoga Day” event … and 14 items an anonymous donor brought to the Food Shelf Office. We have definitely exceeded our ultimate goal,” said DeToy.

“I couldn’t have done it without the help of long-time St. Luke’s members and area residents Barbara Deming for thinking of the project last year and Linda Krutchen-Merring for helping organize Cub Scout Pack 228 Den 3 who met at St. Luke’s to aid in moving the items to the Food Shelf. They sure can carry a lot of cans for their age (with a little help from their parents when their hands got tired). And lastly, thanks to Mr. (Mike) and Mrs. (Kathy) Hayes who run the Food Shelf. They weighed and counted most all of the items and together we organized the items for stocking the shelves. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes are truly a wonderful couple to work with and have inspired me to continue with the food drive and make it more of a community effort next year. It was really a great group effort, and I want to thank everyone,” said DeToy.

The Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf is housed at St. Luke’s, 14 State Street, Brockport, and welcomes donations of non-perishable food items from the community. The current challenging economic conditions have helped to increase the need for and use of the Food Shelf by area residents. St. Luke’s Office is open to accept donations 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. For information, contact the Food Shelf and St. Luke’s at (585) 637-6650.
