Maker Faire Rochester, a celebration of learning and doing

Maker Faire Rochester, billed as the Greatest Show (and Tell!) in Rochester, returns on Saturday, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, 123 East Main Street. The sixth annual family event, sponsored by NYSCATE (The New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education), is open to everyone.

The Rochester Maker Faire is a celebration of learning and doing. This family-friendly celebration features rockets and robots, cosplay and fashion, digital fabrication, DYI science and technology, alternative energy, bicycles, unique hand-made crafts, music, interactive installations, and areas to learn new skills. A centerpiece of this year’s event is a display of fire-blasting trumpets made by Rochester artist, Adam Foster. These fire-blasting trumpets were also a part of this year’s Burning Man event. Attendees can try SkeeBowl –  a skeeball machine that is so big you have to use a bowling ball. There will also be a 12-foot tall unicorn covered in LEDs on display.

For the second year, there will be a S.T.E.A.M. Student Fest for students in third through eighth grades on Friday, November 22, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This day is filled with hands-on activities, engaging demos, wonder and excitement centered around S.T.E.A.M. and every aspect of the Maker Movement.

This year’s S.T.E.A.M. Student Fest keynote speaker is Mario the Maker Magician. As seen on Sesame Street and Sprout, Mario the Maker Magician is a New York-based performer with a homemade menagerie of original, robotic routines and props constructed of cardboard, found objects and 3D printed elements.

Maker Faire originated in San Francisco in 2006 as a project of Make: magazine. It has grown into a world-wide network of events. Maker Faire Rochester held its first event in November of 2014. In 2018, there were 150 maker exhibits and approximately 5,000 attendees at the event. This year, the Rochester event is the largest Maker Faire in New York State.

Tickets are available online at https://rochester.makerfaire.com/ with individual tickets $9 and family passes $30.
