SUNY Brockport’s Jack Cook Receives Best in Track Award

Using AI Tools for a Better Workplace Environment

The Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) has named Jack Cook of SUNY Brockport and Jared Cook of Doane University the Best in Track Award recipients for Career & Professional Development at the SAM International Business Conference, held March 21, 2026.

The award recognizes their paper, “Managing Toxic Leadership and Employee Behavior: AI’s Potential to Curb Dark Triad-Driven Dysfunction,” which explores how artificial intelligence can be used to mitigate the negative effects of toxic personality traits in the workplace.

Their research focuses on the “Dark Triad” of personality traits, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, which are often associated with manipulative, self-serving, and counterproductive workplace behaviors. These traits can disrupt team cohesion, undermine trust, and negatively impact organizational performance.

The study introduces artificial intelligence as a potential “workplace equalizer,” demonstrating how AI-driven tools can reduce bias, standardize evaluations, and limit the influence of toxic behaviors in organizational decision-making. By leveraging technologies such as sentiment analysis, communication monitoring, and AI-assisted coaching, the research outlines practical ways to improve emotional intelligence, enhance ethical decision-making, and foster healthier workplace relationships.

Importantly, the research also acknowledges the challenges associated with AI adoption, including concerns related to privacy, employee trust, and the ethical use of monitoring technologies. This balanced perspective provides leaders with both opportunities and considerations when integrating AI into workplace governance.

“Jack Cook and Jared Cook’s research represents a forward-thinking approach to one of the most complex challenges facing organizations today,” said Shelby Perry, 2026 SAM International Business Conference Chair. “Their work highlights how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence can be used not just to improve efficiency, but to create more ethical, balanced, and effective workplace environments.”

As organizations continue to navigate evolving workplace dynamics, the ability to manage interpersonal behavior and leadership effectiveness has become increasingly critical. This research offers a scalable framework for using AI to support more objective, transparent, and constructive workplace interactions.

The SAM International Business Conference brings together scholars, practitioners, and students from around the world to share research that advances the field of management. Best in Track Awards recognize outstanding contributions within specific disciplines that demonstrate both scholarly excellence and practical relevance.
