Hilton-Parma Senior Center’s fall programming

The Hilton-Parma Senior Center invites the community to their evening meals with entertainment. These evening meals are typically the third or fourth Wednesday of the month, with dinner being served at 4 p.m. and entertainment at 5 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. so attendees can save space with friends or make new ones. Meals planned for the rest of the year include:

•September 28 – Pasta Night with entertainment by Harv Evans; dinner is raviolis and meatballs catered by Foster’s

•October 19 – Oktoberfest with entertainment by Marianna Gonzalez; a German meal catered by Foster’s

•November 16 – Thanksgiving Meal sponsored by the Lions Club and catered and served at Foster’s, located on Canning Street

•December 21 – Holiday Trivia Night with Joe & Sherry

One does not need to be a member of the Senior Center to attend. Evening meals are open to any seniors in Parma, Hilton and the surrounding communities. The cost for these dinners is $10 per person and the reservation deadline is the Monday before the meal. Newly added is the option to bring an item for the Hilton Food Shelf as they are in immediate demand of items; this is optional, but greatly appreciated.

The Senior Center also invites everyone to learn more about computers/technology. Whether you are brand new to technology or have been using it for years, you’re sure to find a computer seminar that’s right for you. Classes are taught by Daniel Jones, who is an independent instructor provided by Monroe County to each Senior Center. Daniel provides older adults with computer, internet, and social networking skills to enhance their lives and keep them connected. His computer courses and seminars break down the barriers of fear and intimidation often associated with learning new technology, providing elders with a greater understanding of the options and tools available through a patient, fun, and easy-to-learn approach. Classes are free, but pre-registration is required to attend. They will be taught on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the following days:

•September 7 – Understanding the Internet

•September 21 – Internet Security, Privacy & Safety

•October 5 – Everything Email

•October 19 – Google: Much More Than Search

•November 9 – Shopping Online

Another new monthly program gaining popularity is called Presenting with Pizza, where a local presenter speaks about an interesting topic or history, followed by a full pizza lunch. All presentations occur around the end of month and always on a Monday at 10:30 a.m. with pizza lunch to follow for $5. The next program on September 26 will be Lifespan and Name that Scam, a fun and interactive approach to learning information about scams and fraud. The presentation will use music from the 1950s, 60s and 70s in a game format.

Senior Line Dancing will also take place this fall with two short sessions of fun and informative instruction by David. Classes will take place on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. for $20 per session.

•Session I: September 22 through October 13

•Session II: November 10 through December 8

Chair Yoga with Sue promotes strength, flexibility, balance, and mindful attention. This approach uses the support and safety of a chair to adapt yoga positions. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques will be offered. This class is suitable for all fitness levels. Two sessions are offered, each from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays for $36 per session.

•Session I: September 13 through October 25 (no class on October 4)

•Session II: November 1 through December 6

The Senior Center also offers lunches weekly on Tuesdays with a suggested donation of $3.50. All meals are prepared by ABVI and reservations are required 10 days in advance. Sometimes cancellations occur and reservations can be accommodated on shorter notice. Meals and dates for the month of September are:

•September 6 – Breaded Chicken Patty on Bun

•September 13 – Chicken ala King over Biscuit

•September 20 – Italian Chicken Sausage on Bun
