Churchville rezoning request draws board discussion on master plan need
A possible zoning change on North Sanford Road in the Village of Churchville was again up for discussion at the February 26 village board meeting, and trustees expect to have a resolution on the matter at the next meeting, Monday, March 5. more

Iroquois Rock to donate land to Sweden
Public lands owned by the Town of Sweden will soon increase by 120 acres of undeveloped property. Iroquois Rock Products, located on Sweden Walker Road in the southeast quadrant of the town, is donating one 66-acre parcel and one 54-acre parcel both on the south side of Swamp Road to Sweden. more

New businesses coming to Sweden
The Sweden Planning Board is looking at several proposals for businesses looking to locate in the town. According to Assessor Alan Bader, the Family Dollar Store has made an application to operate a 9,600 square foot store in the former Bell’s Plaza. Other projects include a Walk the Walk Shoe Store next to Subway in the Brockport Commons Plaza and Edward Jones Financial Advisors next to Verizon, also in the Brockport Commons Plaza. more

Parma residents discuss landfill alternatives
The Town of Parma has a problem on its hands that residents need to start talking about. "It is certainly bad enough that something has to be done," said G. David Foster, the project manager for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, at a public meeting, February 26. more

Ten Years - A Garden Party

In the past ten years, GardenScape, Greater Rochester's Flower and Garden Show has grown from a small trade show comprised of local landscapers and garden-related businesses in the Rochester area, to one of the most impressive flower and garden shows of its size in the northeast. And to celebrate, a garden party will be held March 15-18 at the Dome Center at GardenScape 2001. more

Hamlin launches website
Information about Hamlin’s town government departments and programs are now on-line. The town launched its website hamlinny.org on February 27. Pages are dedicated to the supervisor and town board, water department, dog control office, fire marshall, highway department, assessor, building inspector, town clerk, court clerk, support boards and historian. Also featured are the public library, recreation programs, and Wheel Fest plans. more

Hamlin to move justice court
Plans are underway to move the Town of Hamlin’s justice court out of the town hall and into the brick building at the rear of the town hall. Cramped quarters - the current court room is just under 500 square feet - is the reason for the move. more

Online Book Club at the Odgen Library popular with readers
It has been nearly a year since the Ogden Library began offering access to an online book club. Many residents have signed up for the club and now receive a new chapter of a book each day in their e-mail. The service is a product of Chapter A Day, which is a Florida-based business that coordinates book clubs all over the country. more

Petitions available for Churchville-Chili Board of Education seats
Candidates wishing to run for the Churchville-Chili Central School Board of Education must submit petitions to the district clerk on or before Monday, April 16 at 5 p.m. more

Recycling/garbage committee forming in Hamlin
Is there an economically feasible recycling/garbage collection program that the Town of Hamlin can establish for their residents? That's the purpose of the Recycling Committee that is being formed. Councilwoman Shirley Hollink is looking for volunteers to investigate what options are available for recycling/garbage collection. more

Three seats up on Brockport village board
Brockport residents will elect a mayor and two trustees in an election to be held Tuesday, June 19. The seats carry four year terms and are currently held by Mary Ann Thorpe (mayor), James Whipple and Norman Knapp. more

Village of Hilton seeks nominations for "Citizen of the Year" award
The Hilton Village Board is accepting nominations to recognize one outstanding individual who has unselfishly served the Hilton/Parma community. Nominations can be submitted to Mayor Bill Carter, 59 Henry Street, Hilton 14468, no later than April 1. more

DARE graduation to be held at St. John's
The St. John's School sixth graders have been participating in the Ogden Police Department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program since the beginning of the school year. The sixth grade received the core 17 week program. This program is a collaborative effort by DARE certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents and the community to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. more

GCC to hold Job Fair April 4
Genesee Community College will hold its annual Job and Career Fair Wednesday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the college's Batavia Campus. Dozens of well-known employers have already signed up to participate. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. more

Long-Range Planning Committee looks into the district's future
For the past year the Hilton School District's Long-Range Planning Committee, a 40-member team representing teachers, administrators, staff, parents, community members, architectural and construction consultants, has been meeting under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Business Steven Ayers. The committee has taken a critical look at Hilton's educational program and how changes in the physical environment impact the way instruction is delivered as students strive to meet increasing NYS Learning Standards. more

Cadet boys move on
The Hilton Cadets boys basketball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and eventually led by as many as 26 points in a 71-52 victory over Greece Athena in sectional quarterfinal action February 24. more

High school hockey All-Stars hit the ice for charity
Fifty-five high school seniors from 24 area schools will join CURE Childhood Cancer Association, Wendy's, and WROC-TV 8 for the 14th annual High School Exceptional Senior All-Star Hockey Game. The game is on Thursday, March 15 at 6 p.m., at Lakeshore Ice Arena, 123 Ling Road. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased in advance from CURE Childhood Cancer Association or from any Monroe County high school hockey coach. more

Lady Blue Devils' season ends
The Brockport Blue Devils girls' basketball team ended their season February 20 with a first round sectional playoff loss to Edison Tech 54-36. more

Lakeside to host 10th golf classic
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Lakeside Golf Classic Tournament. Last year the event raised $17,900 for Lakeside Memorial Hospital renovations and medical equipment. more

National In-line Roller Hockey Championship planned for Rochester
The 2001 USA Roller Sports (USARS) in-line national hockey puck and ball championships will be played July 12 through July 22 at the ESL Sports Centre in Rochester. Both the club level and Junior Olympic national championships in ball and puck will be the culmination of the 2001 in-line hockey season for certified USARS clubs. Teams will qualify for the national championships in Rochester through the USARS regional in-line hockey championships. more

Register for Chili Lions Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading
Chili Lions Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading hold their annual open registration on Saturday, March 10, and Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to noon both days, at the Chili Community Center, 4400 Buffalo Road, North Chili. Registration is $100 for the first child and $75 for any additional child of the same family registering. more

Spencerport boosters host toy sale/auction
On Saturday, April 7, the Spencerport Sports Boosters will host a Toy Show Sale and Auction at Cosgrove Middle School, 2749 Spencerport Road, Spencerport. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with the sale ending at 3 p.m. Following the sale, the toy auction will take place beginning at 3:30 and ending at 5 p.m. more
