A new program allowing youth to "ride-along" on fire calls with Brockport’s fire department was approved at a recent board meeting. more

Brockport police department updates operating procedures
In light of previous difficulties experienced by the Brockport Police Department's evidence room, Acting Police Chief Douglas Ziegler has been implementing wide-sweeping changes. "We have spent considerable time modernizing and organizing the property room to bring it into compliance," he said. Ziegler credited Officers Mark Cyr and Michael DeToy with completing of the task. more

Brockport to spruce up Main Street corridor
The beautification of Brockport’s Main Street corridor is scheduled to begin before year's end. Village of Brockport officials accepted a $127,200 bid from Hub Langie Paving Corporation for the completion of the work. Hub Langie was the only contractor to bid the project even though legal notices were published in the Suburban News, the village’s legal newspaper, and in the Dodge Report (a publication for general contractors that lists available projects). more

County partners with towns to accept household hazardous waste
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services, along with the Villages of Hilton, Spencerport, Towns of Parma, Ogden and the Eastman Kodak Company will co-host a regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Village of Hilton Public Works Facility, 50 Henry Street, Saturday, September 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All drop-offs are by appointment only. Hilton Apple Fest sponsors two new contests and a children's display
Apple Fest 2001 is sponsoring three new creative events. They are: Fall Decoration Contest (residents), Fall Decoration Contest (businesses), and Fall Decoration Children's Display. more

Local Environmental Conservation Officer honored
Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Thomas Flaitz was recently named Officer of the Year for the Department of Environmental Conservation Region 8 by his fellow law enforcement officers. Officer Flaitz is assigned to a patrol area which encompasses Orleans and Genesee Counties. In addition to regular patrol duties for the two-county area, Flaitz is a firearms instructor, a field training officer and a heavy duty diesel vehicle emissions inspector. more

Mildred Snyder on her 100th birthday
A large group consisting of family members, former neighbors, former students, former colleagues and some who only knew her by the stories that still survive forty-one years after her retirement, met and reminisced with Mildred Snyder on her one hundredth birthday on Sunday, August 5 at the West Side Manor Adult Care Residence. more

New magazine highlights New York's archives and history
The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust offer a new quarterly magazine, "New York Archives." The feature articles and departments in this publication draw their content from the millions of historical records in the care of the State Archives and thousands of other historical organizations located in virtually every community in New York state. more

Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance seeking paid workers
Thirty-five years ago, Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance Service had no trouble finding volunteers. In fact, a year after service began in 1966 it had 160 members. "It's gone downhill since," said Director of Operations Jeff Tewksbury. "With changes in the economy and so many families needing dual incomes, people just don't have the time anymore." more

The Lloyds will be missed, community members say
A Spencerport icon is leaving. Rev. Harold (Skip) Lloyd, pastor of the White Church, will be moving to Athol, Massachusetts, where he will serve as the pastor of Athol United Church of Christ. A Farewell Open House was given at the White Church (Sunday, August 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.). Rev. Lloyd's last Sunday service in Spencerport will be on Sunday, September 2. more

Veterans' Hepatitis C/Diabetes screening
The Rochester Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic and the Canandaigua VA Medical Center are partnering with Veterans Aimed Toward Awareness and the Veterans Network of Kodak Employees to conduct a free Hepatitis C/Diabetes screening on September 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Kodak's Theater on the Ridge, Bldg. 28, 200 Ridge Road West in Rochester. more

Water Collaborative to clean up Rochester
The Water Education Collaborative, located at the Rochester Museum & Science Center, is inviting the community to participate in this year's International Coastal Cleanup. The 15th Annual International Coastal Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year, approximately 250,000 pounds of debris was collected from over 1,000 sites worldwide. The Rochester community is joining in this extensive effort to protect and restore this unique community resource along the Genesee River and Durand Eastman Beach. more

Second grader wins Buffalo Bills game tickets
Matthew Thompson, son of Linda and Jeff Thompson and a second grader at Hilton's Village Elementary School, was the winner of two tickets to the Buffalo Bills vs. Seattle Seahawks game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. He won by entering the UPS/Buffalo Bills Summer Reading Program at the Parma Library, a contest open to students in grades 2-12. more

Support offered for Parkinson's caregivers
The Genesee County Office for the Aging and United Memorial Medical Center co-sponsor the Caregiver's Support Group and Parkinson's Disease Support Group. The group meets on the second Monday of each month from 11 a.m. - 12 noon at the Genesee County Office for the Aging, 2 Bank Street, Batavia. The support group meetings are open to those with Parkinson's Disease and their caregivers. more

The 15th Annual New York State Beach Cleanup, a part of the International Coastal Cleanup of The Ocean Conservancy, will be held on September 15 and 16. more

Volunteers are needed to provide braille transcription for the blind in the Spencerport area. Volunteers transcribe textbooks, novels, cookbooks, menus, and more. more

Women's legal clinic to be held in Brockport
The Domestic Violence Regional Collaborative sponsors a women's legal clinic in Brockport, Monday, September 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This clinic is sponsored by the Domestic Violence Regional Collaborative, which is a new initiative funded by the Violence Against Women Act Civil Legal Assistance Grants. more

Anti-reform group releases annual education poll
A poll recently released shows conflicting attitudes about education proposals, according to an analysis by the Center for Education Reform (CER). For five years CER has analyzed surveys and polls on Americans' attitudes toward school reform proposals. This poll, the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools by Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup, (PDK) has been criticized for selectivity and bias in its polling. more

Brockport graduate completes internship
Daniel Webster has completed an internship in the Spencerport District Office of Congressman John J. LaFalce (D-29th, NY). He is the son of Rev. Gordon and Gloria Webster of 36 Crescent Drive, Brockport. more

Hilton finalizing details on capital project
The Hilton Central School District continues to fine tune an estimated $58 million capital project that is expected to come before voters on December 4. Administrators were meeting with architects and construction consultants again this week to nail down more details of the project that the board of education will likely approve at its October 9 meeting. more

AARP Driver Safety Program offered in August class
Reduce auto insurance premium nearly 10 percent over a three-year period by taking the AARP Driver Safety Program -- a community service course sponsored by the AARP Northwest Chapter. Also, four points from violations can be forgiven with successful completion of this course. Participants or their spouse must be 50 years old. Preregistration is required. more

New video maginifier in use at Sweden Senior Center
Arlene Ward uses the video magnifier at the Sweden Senior Center. The purchase of this machine was made possible through the generous donations of the Brockport Elks, Kiwanis, and Lions Clubs along with Senior Center Site Council and personal donations. more

The Hilton Heat U15 girls team is comprised of 13, 14 and 15 year-olds from the village of Hilton, town of Parma and Greece. Having been together for several years, players and their families have grown together as teammates and/or friends who commonly share the passion for the game of soccer. more
