Clifton Fire Department gets life-saving portable cardiac defibrillator
Clifton Fire Department was honored by The Prudential Insurance Company of America for acquiring portable cardiac defibrillators through The Prudential Helping Hearts Program. The rescue squad received a $1,000 grant from Prudential to help defray the cost of the defibrillation unit. The presentation took place at the Clifton Fire Department. more

The evening's program included, Cathann Kress, the Assistant Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development as the featured speaker. The program also included the recognition of the leadership and the presentation of the Friend of 4-H and the 4-H Leaders' Award for Outstanding Service. more

Red Cross announces major changes in Liberty Fund
The American Red Cross has announced a series of sweeping changes regarding its Liberty Disaster Fund to increase support for people affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks while also making it easier for them to access needed help. The Red Cross established the Liberty Fund shortly after the September 11 tragedies as a separate, segregated account to fund relief services related to terrorism. more

'Susan B. Anthony' visits Riga seniors
Susan B. Anthony detailed her lifelong struggle for women's suffrage and the abolition of slavery for more than 75 members and guests of Senior Citizens of Riga at the club's November meeting at the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post on Buffalo Road. more

Remember seat belts during holiday travel
Despite the sharp drop in travel following the September 11 attacks, travel is returning to normal levels. While road travel will only be down 1.6 percent compared to last year, according to AAA, the highest proportion of people ever will be choosing to take to the roadways - with more than 87 percent choosing to drive. more

Santa makes scheduled trip to Parma
Hilton-Parma Recreation is hosting their 13th Annual Lunch with Santa on Saturday, December 8 at the Village Community Center in Hilton. Co-sponsored by Hilton McDonald's, the breakfast is for Santa's friends ages 3 to 7 years and their parents. Reservations are being handled for two seatings (11:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.) or (12:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.) at a cost of $4 per child and no cost for Mom and Dad. more

Sweden passes noise ordinance
The Town of Sweden has adopted a noise ordinance that aims to prevent "unreasonable, loud, disturbing and unnecessary noise" in order to provide residents with "an environment in which disturbing, excessive or offensive noise is not detrimental to his or her life, health or enjoyment of their property." more

Sweden seniors offer Memories of Love tree
The Sweden Senior Center will sponsor the "Memories of Love" Tree during the holiday season. The decorated tree will be on the west lawn of the Senior Center. A donation of $5 per light bulb will enable participants to honor a special person or event. Donors may purchase lights in memory of deceased relatives or friends, a living memorial to a loved one, anniversaries, birthdays, engagements, marriages, to honor a loved one serving (or has served) America. more

B-B Parent Teacher Conference Days and High School Open House set
On Monday, November 19, Byron-Bergen students in kindergarten through grade twelve will be dismissed early for parent teacher conferences. Students in grades five through twelve are being dismissed at 10:10 a.m. and kindergarten through grade four will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. The high school has scheduled an Open House scheduled for Monday starting at 11:30 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. more

Child care subsidies available to GCC students
Genesee Community College has received three grants that will provide child care tuition subsidies to college students who are parents. These subsidies are only available to students attending Genesee Community College. more

GCC to offer distance education degree program
Genesee Community College's Board of Trustees has approved the college's first degree program - General Studies - which students can complete predominantly through distance education. The new degree program is similar to the college's existing General Studies program, except that is based on distance learning, including telecourses and online courses. more

GCC videoconferenceing facility available to area businesses
Eighteen area business and professional leaders learned how to cut travel costs, improve communication with distant colleagues, and expand training opportunities at Genesee Community College's first videoconferencing seminar in late October. more

State approves Roberts Wesleyan's
new graduate program in teacher education
The New York State Department of Education has granted its approval of Roberts Wesleyan College's newly redesigned teacher education graduate programs. The program has been reconfigured to comply with new state-mandated requirements for teacher certification. more

Dawes to coach new Spencerport boys lacrosse program
Jeremy Dawes has been named the Spencerport modified boys lacrosse coach for the spring 2002 season. This will be the Rangers first ever boys lacrosse program. more

Golden Eagles in playoffs again
When a football team loses an All-American offensive lineman, a senior quarterback and an all-star running back, a rebuilding year is usually in the offing. In spite of those losses, the Brockport Golden Eagles advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the second year in a row following their 9-1 season. more

Karate students receive promotions
Gillam Grant (Collamer-Jones) Karate held Isshin Ryu Black Belt Tests on November 10, under Head Instructor Shihan Cyndy Jones, a 7th degree black belt. Sensei Laura Armstrong, Jerry Ciriello, James R. Koudelka, James Kunkel and Gina Wyffels successfully tested for San-Dan, 3rd degree black belt. San-Dan requires years of dedicated teaching, training and study beyond the first two black belt levels. more

Knight named to lead Rangers bowling
Nancy Knight has been named the Spencerport Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling coach. Knight has been teaching English at Cosgrove Middle School for nine years. She is very involved in youth bowling and in local bowling leagues. more
