Several dead gulls found in the past two weeks along Lake Ontario near Rochester are being tested for Type E botulism following confirmation of the presence of the deadly bacteria in similar birds found in Oswego and Cayuga County. more

Canoe racers and volunteers had fun
The Canal Days Canoe Committee would like to thank all who made the Sunday canoe race so much fun. Karen Fien, Bill Hill, Tim Dotzler, Dorraine Laudisi and Janene Swanson, Rick and Mark Huntington, Tom Cole, Pat Brown, and Andrew Hand all worked very hard to get their crews together and decorate the canoes. more

Experience F-16 flight at air show
One of the main attractions at the 2002 Orleans Aviation Days August 10 and 11 will be the U.S. Air Force Experience Exhibit. The demonstration of flight in an F-16 is part of aviation events at Pine Hill Airport, 4906 Pine Hill Road, Albion. The Rochester Skydiving Center will provide demonstrations about every 90 minutes, antique aircraft are scheduled to participate and balloon launches are planned for preview day, Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday mornings at about 6 a.m. There may be a night glow after dark on Friday and Saturday evenings, weather conditions permitting. more

Auditions scheduled for children's choir
Auditions are being held for the choirs of the Amadeus Chorale. The Amadeus Chorale is a well-established singing group of exceptional children and youth. The Chorale is not affiliated with a religion, school or university. Members have sung on Peter Jennings' "World News Tonight" Fourth of July Special, for Secretary of State Colin Powell, in Independence Hall, and are slated to sing in July 2003 at the Old North Church in Boston. more

Rochester Area Sweet Corn Fest August 11
The Tenth Annual Rochester Area Sweet Corn Fest captures the excitement of the local sweet corn harvest. Area farm markets will feature sweet corn from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 11. Farm markets in Monroe County will offer a free ear of cooked, ready-to-eat, farm fresh corn to each customer who stops by the Sweet Corn Fest. more

Youth Bureau begins 2003 funding process
Each year, the Genesee-Orleans Youth Bureau administers population-based state aid made available to Genesee and Orleans Counties by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. In each county, the Youth Board reviews all proposals and submits funding recommendations to the County Legislature for final approval. Funding is available for youth development programs that serve youth up to age 21. Priority is given to programs that focus on asset development and risk reduction. more

Equipment purchase will help Greece company create jobs
Monroe County has approved a GreatRebate incentive for Performance Technologies, Inc. in the Town of Greece. The GreatRebate program will assist Performance Technologies in the purchase of a surface mount machine, which will help the company expand its operations and create a projected 10 new jobs. more

Maziarz legislation authorizes creation of Spencerport Fire District
Legislation sponsored by State Senator George Maziarz (61st District) authorizing the creation of the Spencerport Fire District has become law. more

Churchville resident is McQuaid's Knight of the Year
Trevor M. Cutaiar has been named McQuaid Jesuit High School's 2002 Knight of the Year. Awarded annually since 1962 by the school newspaper, this honor is given to a student who exemplifies McQuaid ideals. According to Matt Duncan '03, editor-in-chief, "The Lance feels that somewhere among the seniors there is a man who, by his "Knightly Spirit," enthusiasm and general character, deserves to be called "Knight of the Year." He should be a man prominent in his studies and in school activities, according to school representatives. more

GCC offers first-ever online degree program
Genesee Community College received approval from the New York State Education Department to offer a Liberal Arts and Sciences/General Studies associate's degree online, the college's first-ever fully online degree program. more

Holley's director of instruction/special programs retires after 21 years
Holley Central School District will say goodbye to one of its top administrators on August 31. John Heise, director of instruction/special programs for the past four years, joined the district in July 1981 as elementary principal, a position he held for 11 years. He then moved into the role of high school principal, where he stayed until taking his present position in July 1998. more

New Brockport district residents need to register
Brockport Central School District Registrar's Office reminds all new residents to register their children for the 2002-2003 school year. To ensure that student placement and bus transportation will be in place prior to the first day of school, residents should contact the Registrar's office at 637-1857 for a registration packet. Parents of a child eligible to begin Kindergarten (must be 5 years old by December 1, 2002), should contact the Registrar's office as soon as possible. Residents may also stop by the Registrar's office in the District Administration Building, 40 Allen Street. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. more

Students at BOCES 2 raise $2,000 to benefit a fellow student
When students and staff at WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center learned that Mike Zobel, a student in Cal Wicken's Bakery class, needed a liver transplant, they immediately wanted to help. At the end of the school year, students and staff deemed one week "Mike Zobel Week," and held various fundraisers in his honor. They raised $2,000 for their friend in need. more

Brockport Blizzard U-19 named champions
The Brockport Blizzard U-19 Boys were champions at the Niagara Pioneer International Soccer Tournament which was held on July 6-7. more

Camp Shoots and Scores
Hamlin-Parma Recreation held their annual Ory Mee Basketball Camps the week of July 21 and hosted 50 area athletes from 3rd to 5th grades (All-Star Division) and 6th through 8th grades (Jr. High Division). more
