At Adams Basin hub,
schoolhouse continues history as gathering place

A hundred and more years ago, the one room schoolhouse was the hub of small towns everywhere. The schoolhouse in Adams Basin was no exception. According to historical records, the Adams Basin Schoolhouse got its start on November 7, 1826 when a local resident, Henry Robinson, deeded a piece of land to the Trustees of School District #1, Ogden, for the purpose of erecting a schoolhouse. The building was erected in 1838. more

Birder field trips set
The Rochester Birding Association has scheduled nine free introductory field trips for people who want to learn about local birding hot spots and polish their bird identification skills. The first trip will be Sunday, January 23 and will focus on gulls and wintering waterfowl. more

BPD makes arrest in marijuana case
Members of the Brockport Police Department wrapped up a month long investigation in January that culminated in the arrest of a 52-year old man, Ollie Hunter. more

Citizens Police Academy begins in February
The Town of Ogden Police Department will again offer their Citizens Police Academy (CPA) on Wednesday evenings at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport beginning in mid-February. The class will meet for 10 weeks. more

Info meeting February 8 on West Ridge Road rehab project
The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting to discuss the upcoming highway project to reconstruct West Ridge Road, State Route 104, in the town of Greece, Monroe County. more

Scout project renovates swimming pool

Mark MacEwan, a BHS sophomore and a member of Boy Scout Troop 111 in Brockport, recently completed a renovation of the swimming record board at the Brockport High School swimming pool. MacEwan is working toward the rank of Eagle Scout and this project fulfills one of his requirements. more

Snowmobiles find fun in winter
There is only one thing that makes Rochester's winter months tolerable for Al Volkmuth - flying through the snow on his Arctic Cat Panterra. Volkmuth isn't alone as demonstrated by the more than 250 other members of the Hilton Sno-Flyers, a local snowmobile group. more

Theva's Dream: A Relief Mission to Sri Lanka
Sinnathamby Thevanesan is Pastor of the Brockport United Methodist Church. "Theva," as he is affectionately known by his congregation, is returning to his home country of Sri Lanka for two weeks starting in mid-February 2005, to engage in personal ministry to former parishioners and friends there who have been affected by the recent disaster. more

Ecumenical prayer service celebrates annual week of prayer
Seven congregations, representing seven Christian denominations, will come together for an Ecumenical Celebration of the Word of God. The Rev. Gary Ferner will deliver the message at the service which will be held as part of the area's observance of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. more

Requests and comments accepted for agricultural district
Monroe County's Midwestern Agricultural District, located in the Towns of Sweden, Ogden and Riga, was created in 1973 and is currently under review. As part of this process, property owners have the opportunity to add their land to, or remove their land from the district. more

Rochester picnic in Florida features hometown favorites
The Rochester, New York Annual Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2005 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion, 3845 Wickham Road, Melbourne, Florida. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. more

Students can learn fire safety lessons from the Great Chicago Fire, 134 years after Mrs. O'Leary's cow is supposed to have kicked over a lantern, causing a "hot time in the old town tonight." more

Essay contest winner
Kristin Glazier, a senior at Byron-Bergen High School, won a student essay contest sponsored by the Lakeside Foundation and was introduced to United States Army General Tommy Franks at the Lakeside Foundation's Annual Gala on December 10. more

Hilton students to participate in National Job Shadow Day
Hilton High School will kick off Job Shadowing 2005, a school to work initiative to promote career exploration for students in the workplace. more

TIME Magazine Senior Editor to speak to Honor Society inductees
It's been nearly 21 years since Christopher John Farley left behind his three-sport Brockport high school athletic career and activities such as the Latin Club, Model U.N., Radio Club and the Mathletes. Monday, January 24, he returns to speak to new members of another organization he has represented well, the Brockport chapter of the National Honor Society. more

Blue Devils swimmers now 6-2
Brockport won the first ten events before swimming the final two exhibitions in defeating an undermanned Hilton squad 103-56. more

Bright Raven gymnasts are first at Graffiti Meet
The Bright Raven Gymnastics girls Level 4 team finished in first place as a team at the Graffiti Invitational held in Lockport January 9 with one member of the team scoring a perfect 10. more

C-C's Sullivan within six of mark
Katie Sullivan scored a game-high 19 points to lead Churchville-Chili to a 56-35 girl's basketball victory over Hilton for the Saints ninth consecutive win. Sullivan's offensive output gives her 1,094 career points - just six points shy of Saints all-time leader Joanna Patalano's mark of 1,100. more

Hilton Select Basketball Team for third and fourth grade boys won their division while participating in the Christopher's Challenge tournament held at St. John Fisher College. more

Age level winners announced in free-throw contest
Thirty-seven local Hilton youth competed on Saturday, January 15 in a free-throw contest sponsored by St. Leo's Knights of Columbus. more

Rangers win 8th straight Barnard Memorial
Four Spencerport wrestlers won their weight class and two others advanced to the finals as the Rangers won their eighth consecutive and 17th overall Clayton Barnard Wrestling Tournament held at Hilton. more
