Albion may become home to Wal-Mart
More than 200 people filled the seats at the Albion Middle School on February 14 to hear more about a Wal-Mart proposal to build a super center on the outskirts of the village. more

Area residents take part in 4-H Capital Days
A delegation representing thousands of 4-H members in New York state will expand their knowledge of state government when they travel to Albany March 7 and 8 for the 70th annual 4-H Capital Days event. The 140 teens represent 4-H members from every county in the state and borough in New York City. more

Brockport reinstitutes community service program
Village of Brockport residents will soon see orange reflective vested individuals shoveling hydrants, shoveling sidewalks or any other number of community service projects. Village trustees unanimously agreed to reinstitute a community service program in the village for offenders who have committed crimes here. more

DEC announces "State of Lake Ontario" meetings
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will hold three public meetings to discuss Lake Ontario fisheries. The eighth annual "State of Lake Ontario" public meetings will be held in Monroe, Niagara and Oswego counties. more

Hilton Church sends ministry team to Honduras
Parma Christian Fellowship is sending its fifth team to Morazan, Honduras, during February. The church sponsors a private school in Morazan, called Escuela Nueva York (New York School). more

Hilton churches to celebrate a passover-last supper meal
Eight churches in Hilton have planned a first century-style Passover meal and Last Supper experience that is open to anyone who would like to participate. The foundations of the contemporary Eucharist (Communion) lie in the ancient Jewish Passover. more

IT Woman of the Year nominations sought
The Association for Women in Computing (AWC) is calling for nominations for the IT Woman of the Year Award. This award is designed to recognize, celebrate and make visible the achievements of women in the information technology (IT) field. Through this award, women in the IT field are encouraged to stay in the Greater Rochester area, mentor young women and contribute to the economic growth of the region. more

Monroe County holds capital improvement info meetings
The Monroe County Planning Board will hold three information meetings on the county's proposed Capital Improvement Program for 2006-2011. The meeting in this area which all government officials and the general public are invited to attend will be on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road. more

Public hearing set for Ogden Village Pines proposal
Village Pines, a project that has been in the planning stages with the Town of Ogden for more than 18 months, will be the subject of a February 23 public hearing. more

Retired Hilton teachers back in action at School 34
The sweat was beading up on Ed Evans' forehead as he stood in the library at the Dr. Louis A. Cerulli School No. 34 on Lexington Avenue. It has been many years since Evans retired from his teaching career at Hilton High School and now he was once again standing amongst about two-dozen active third graders. more

Two vie for top spot in Spencerport
Incumbent Mayor Theodore "Ted" Walker will be challenged by Town of Greece Police Chief Merritt Rahn for the mayoral position with the Village of Spencerport. The election will take place March 15. Two trustee seats will also be on the ballot. Incumbent Ted Rauber and political newcomer John Marello are the candidates. more

Roberts Wesleyan College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are spending February break mentoring students from Global Media Arts High School at Franklin (GMA). But this year, SIFE is sweetening the deal. more

Spencerport approves full-day kindergarten
In a unanimous vote, Spencerport school board members, upon the recommendation of Superintendent Phil Langton, approved the implementation of full day kindergarten. The decision was reached at the February 15 board meeting. more

Senior Steve Batty scored a game-high 29 points and added 15 rebounds to lead fifth-seeded Kendall to an easy 65-37 victory over 12th seeded Marion in the first round of the Section Five Class CC boy's basketball tournament. more

Six area players named to hockey All-Star team
Churchville-Chili's Brad Gurbacki and Spencerport's Chris Farnsworth were named First-Team All-Stars in the White Division and four other area players were Second-Team selections in the Monroe County High School Hockey League. more

Dan Pincelli has been named as Spencerport’s new varsity football coach. Pincelli takes over for Tony Lipani, who resigned after six years as the Rangers coach, with a record of 21-32. more
