In a ceremony outside the chapel of the Firemen's Home, Hudson, New York, and in the shadow of the new state-of-the-art Firemen's Home building under construction, a time capsule from 1966 was extracted from a cement slab built into the existing building. more

New pumper added to Hamlin fire apparatus line-up
The Hamlin Fire District received an early Christmas present when its new $350,000 pumper arrived on December 13, 2005. The pumper was built by E-One in Florida and its design improves elements of fire personnel safety and community fire protection services over the next 30 years, according to department personnel. more

Sickelco family donates to library in memory of their parents
The Sickelco family has made a donation to the Ogden Farmers' Library in honor of their parents, Robert and Carolyn Sickelco. The five Sickelco children, Jim, Lynn, Susan, Nancy and Elizabeth, each made a significant donation to the library in November 2005 and asked Library Director Patty Uttaro to spend the money in a way that would honor the memory of Bob and Carolyn. more

SSBC toy show celebrates sixth anniversary
The Spencerport Sports Booster Club will host its sixth annual "Toys For Sports" fundraiser on Saturday, April 1 at Spencerport High School in the east gym. The Toy Show will open at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. Toy and sports card vendors will be in attendance. Admission is $1 for adults, children 12 and under are free. more

Water supply still a discussion topic in Kendall and Hamlin
Whether the towns of Hamlin and Kendall should disband their long running water board partnership and come under the umbrella of the Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA) is still a topic for discussion among board members and residents. more

Westside staffer writes book to go 'gaga' over
In the end, when her eyes were weary and bleary from work, Nicholas and Alexa still were clear winners. Robbi Hess, Westside News Inc. editorial assistant, just completed her first published book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to 30,000 Baby Names. While there were many lessons learned along the way, Hess said one of the most comforting was that she was still pleased with the names she and her husband, Tim, chose for their two children. more

Working smoke detectors save Hamlin family
Smoke detectors awoke a family living on Hidden Creek Lane, Hamlin, at 3 a.m. February 15 and alerted them to a fire in their family room. This early warning allowed both the occupants of the home to escape without injury, according to Hamlin Fire Department personnel. more

Work on historic tower clock to begin
In June 1914, the Monroe County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented to the Village of Brockport a tower clock that was placed on the steeple of the United Methodist Church at the corner of Erie and Main Streets. more

Church needs help to rebuild homes, lives
The Bergen United Methodist Church is raising funds to send volunteers to their sister church, St. Mark's, in Gulfport, Mississippi to aid in the Katrina disaster. more

The Brockport Central School District Board of Education appointed Jeffrey J. DeLany, assistant principal of the A.D. Oliver Middle School, at its February 7 meeting. He starts March 13. more

BCS announces schedule changes
School will be in session for all students in grades K through 12 on Friday, March 17, originally scheduled as a superintendent's conference day to compensate for the loss of instruction time during a school closing in November and two test scoring days. more

Brockport schedules Kindergarten information night
The Ginther School Parent Teacher Student Association is co-sponsoring an information night for parents of children in the Brockport School District who will be starting kindergarten in September 2006. more

Holley Elementary thanks Wal-Mart for donations
Brockport Wal-Mart donated four large boxes of holiday decorations to Holley Elementary School. The decorations were used for the School Arts Partnership Grant for which the musical team of Bart Dentino and Kevin Huber are working with first graders using visualization to improve reading skills. more

Leukemia dance marathon planned
Students will dance 12 hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. in this year's Leukemia dance marathon scheduled for March 17 and 18 to raise money for the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department. more

#2 Rangers advance
The Spencerport Rangers, ranked second for the Class AA girl's basketball sectional tournament, defeated seventh ranked Irondequoit 58-42 in first round play. more

Area wrestlers off to states
Eight area wrestlers, including four from Brockport, won their respective weight classes at the Super Sectionals held at Fairport last weekend and have advanced to compete in the New York State Championships February 24-25 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. more

Basketball benefit set for cancer patient
The Churchville-Chili Leo's Club, a youth service organization related to the Lion's Club International, has planned a benefit to help schoolmate, Daniel Myslivecek, who is fighting a rare form of cancer. They've organized a basketball benefit where they will challenge their Lion's Club counterparts to help raise money for Daniel's costly treatments. The event is Sunday, March 5 from 12:30 until 2 p.m. in the C-C Intermediate School gym. more

Blue Devils lose in semi finals
Brockport, in spite of being seeded seventh in Class AA, advanced to the semi-finals before dropping a 3-2 decision to Bishop Kearney/Eastridge in high school hockey. more
