Area family raises guide dog puppy
The Chait family, volunteer puppy raisers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, has had its puppy graduate as a full-fledged guide dog. Eli, a yellow male labrador retriever, has been with the Chait family since he was eight-weeks-old. Now fully trained to be part of a Guiding Eye team, Eli is fulfilling his potential as a working guide dog with Krista Anderson in Hollan, MI. more

BPD and BFD plan for National Night Out Sept. 22
National Night Out is "officially" an August event that is celebrated nationwide but with the rounds of blistering heat the area experienced on the originally scheduled date, officials from the Brockport Police and Fire Departments cancelled the event. It has been rescheduled for Friday, September 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. more

Brockport mayor signs police chief waiver
It's been a year since Village of Brockport officials revoked the chief of police's contract. In that time, village officials and Police Chief Daniel Varrenti made attempts to resolve the employment contract issue, to no avail. It is now in the hands of the courts to decide. more

Church receives funding for capital improvements
The First Presbyterian Church of Brockport was the site of historic events such as a rallying point for both the Civil and Spanish American Wars. It was its long, impressive history and the fact that it is situated in the midst of a Preserve America community that put it over the top and earned the church a $100,000 grant for much-needed renovations. The matching grant was received through the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. more

Dancer to perform in NYC
After auditioning at the Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, Paige Brongo was offered a spot in the Camp Broadway Give Me A Drum!® program. Brongo will be one of the performers to participate in a five-day program in New York City, and perform in the opening number of the 80th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. more

The 22nd Annual Marguerite Hare Browne Professional Education Awards dinner will be held Wednesday, October 18 at the Greece Marriott. This event is a celebration to honor individuals who contribute to the excellence of education in the community. more

Agriculture forum held at Kludt Farm
Members of the Assembly Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Communities held a public forum in Albion on August 31 and toured the Kludt agri-business prior to the gathering to hear from area farmers and local officials about the current condition of the agriculture industry and to help find ways to address the specific needs and challenges of the farming community. more

'Main Street' committee to form to help with future project
With the prospect of a Main Street reconstruction project looming in the Village of Brockport, officials decided to form a Main Street Committee. The committee would be charged with working with officials through the reconstruction project from conception through developing a marketing strategy to keep the businesses alive downtown during the construction phase. more

Murray's bi-centennial approaching; committee members sought
The Town of Murray will be celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2008. Town officials are seeking members of the community to serve on a committee to offer ideas and help plan the festivities for the Bi-Centennial celebration. more

New forest owner workshop planned
A regional workshop will be held on Saturday, October 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Center, 480 North Main Street, Canandaigua, and will cover basic principles of sustainable forestry practices. more

Sharing accomplishments, plans
Rotary District 7090 Governor Dick Earne visited the Holley Rotary Club. The district governor met with the club's board of directors who shared with him the club's programs for the past year and their goals for the current year. more

Hilton High School Alumni Hall of Fame induction planned
The Hilton High School Alumni Hall of Fame will induct alumni into the organization on September 28, at the high school. Inductees are: Brother James Almeter 1964; Beulah "Johnnie Marshall" Bailey 1938 in memoriam; David Crumb 1960; Cathy Cushing Gardner 1968; Jane Harris Grad 1962; Al Skinner in memoriam; Robert G. Holley Board approves 65 percent passing for freshman Regents
At its August 28 meeting, the Holley Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution that will require all incoming ninth grade students to pass all five required Regents exams with a 65 percent or better. more

Hawks drop opener in girls soccer
Starting just four seniors, Holley began the 2006 season with a 6-0 loss to Class A Newark as the Hawks hosted a season opening girl's soccer tournament. more

Rangers lose to weather, Franklin
With both offenses reduced to the running game due to a steady rain and wind, Spencerport dropped their season opener football game 10-6 to Franklin. more

Rochester Warriors compete in Boston
The Rochester Warriors 13 and under AAU girl's basketball team participated in a tournament against some of the best 13U teams from New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts (including last year's state champs) in Boston and won the championship with the help of Hilton resident Becky Hebert. more

Spencerport soccer club collects soccer equipment
On Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, 184 pieces of soccer equipment were collected during the annual Spencerport Soccer Club Tournament. The collection, developed through the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Passback Program, was organized and directed by Bria Mastrogiovanni, a member of the U14 Spencerport Rage girl's soccer team. more
