Jason McElwain, the young Greece high schooler with autism who has become a nationwide sensation by shattering basketball records with 20 winning points in four minutes in February 2006, will be making an appearance at an Arc of Orleans fundraiser. more

Area municipalities receive grant funding
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to make multiple improvements benefiting residents living in the 1st Legislative District, which includes the Town of Sweden, as well as the Villages of Hilton and Brockport, totaling $105,000 has been secured. more

B-B's New Millennium project updates physical plant
Residents in the Byron-Bergen Central School District will head to the polls on Wednesday, June 6 to decide on a proposed New Millennium Capital Project which would renovate and modernize the district's physical plant. more

Brockport adopts ethics code amendments
Tempers flared and voices were raised during the public hearing on May 21 during which Village of Brockport officials looked at amendments to the village code on ethics as they related to village officials accepting gifts and the way appointments were made to the board. more

Brockport Firefighter's Memorial
Monument work progresses

The molds for the Brockport Firefighters Memorial Monument have been created using the carved wood sculptures as a base. Sculptor Brian Hanlon said the figures (which are composed of more than 20 pieces of bronze) have all been poured and they will commence constructing bronze replicas of Richard Kron's artwork. more

Brockport Lions cruise-in to summer
The Brockport Lions Club is planning for its Cruise-In again this summer. The events will be held July 14 and September 8 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation field (on the hill), Route 19. more

Cobblestone Society to explore wind energy and history topics
The Cobblestone Society Museum in Gaines will sponsor a public awareness program about wind turbines Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. in the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church, 10 East Park Street, Albion. more

Director appointed at Seymour Library
The Seymour Library Board of Trustees has named a new Library Director, Cassandra Guthrie. She took over the responsibilities of director in Brockport on May 16 after a nine year tenure as community relations librarian at the White Plains Public Library in Westchester County, NY. more

Kestrel nest on camera at wildlife refuge
This spring the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge introduced the Kestrel Cam which looks inside a nest box occupied by an American kestrel. The nest box located behind the refuge office was wired with a small camera to provide live images of the birds which have successfully used the box for many years. more

Legion Auxiliary prepares for flag disposal and officers' banquet
The annual disposal of all unserviceable and torn United States flags ceremony by the Monroe County American Legion Auxiliary, Department of New York, will be held on Sunday, June 10, at 933 University Avenue at 2 p.m. more

Property tax exemptions in place for home improvements
As a way to encourage property owners to make improvements to their homes, Village of Brockport officials unanimously approved a tax exemption for approved home improvements of one and two-family homes. Following the improvements and the completion of an application, the taxpayer can request a nine-year tax exemption. more

The Annual Meeting of the Spencerport Federal Credit Union will be held on Wednesday, June 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Millennium Lodge at Greece Canal Park. This event is free to all members of the credit union. more

Volunteers sought for POD
In the event of a large-scale public health emergency, such as a pandemic or epidemic affecting Monroe County, it may be necessary to administer vaccine and/or dispense medication to the entire population within as little as 48 yours. In order to make this effort manageable, communities are recruiting volunteers to staff and operate a Point of Dispensing (POD). more

Wheel Fest rolls into Hamlin for the 10th year
In an era of constant change, one thing that has remained steady in the Town of Hamlin is its Wheel Fest which will celebrate its 10th anniversary when the event kicks off on June 2. For 12 hours (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) visitors will be treated to the sights and sounds that have kept the festival rolling along for a decade and will also find new things to enjoy. more

Writings in stone and textiles exhibit
spotlights stonecutters' achievements

Finding work, building roads, and constructing important civic, religious, and private structures in cities like Rochester, Albany and Buffalo, itinerant stonecutters from Abruzzo, Italy helped create much of the distinctive stone architecture in the area today. more

For over a decade, area credit unions from Rochester and the surrounding counties have conducted bake sales, sold dinner and theater books, held raffles and the like to raise money for the Credit Unions Care for Kids community involvement project. more

Firemen looking at new construction
The Village of Spencerport Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, June 5 at the Village Office, 27 West Avenue at 7:15 p.m. to review the application of Spencerport Volunteer Fireman's Association for the construction of a new storage building. more

Holley Rotary supports local efforts
The Holley Rotary Club has contributed $250 to support the Hospice of Orleans County's golf tournament. Prior to this they contributed $250 to the Orleans County ARC and $350 to the Victims Rights Committee. more

Legislator to host public forum
County Legislator Dick Yolevich will host a public forum where residents are invited to talk about issues or concerns. more

Monroe County to repair Mill Road
Mill Road's pavement has deteriorated due to the fierce weather conditions faced this past winter, according to Monroe County officials. As a result, Monroe County DOT will be filling potholes, and repairing minor damages along the thoroughfare. more

Public meeting set on Baker Park improvement plans
On Tuesday, June 5, the Town of Chili will hold a public informational meeting to discuss improvement plans for Baker Park. The meeting will be held at the Chili Senior Center at 6 p.m. more

Six Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School students were honored during the Eighth Grade Awards Assembly on April 20. Emily Banzer and Carley Brindle received the Jeff Bell Award; Kaytlyn Fauci and Amber Reynolds received the Ray Zaffuto Award; and Kevin Bentley and Tara Jackson received the Bill Hertweck Award. more

GCC Foundation names Medal of Service recipients
Batavia residents Jerry and Carm Reinhart were named the 2007 recipients of the Alpha Medal of Service. The medal recognizes extraordinary volunteer and philanthropic support of Genesee Community College. more

Genesee Community College celebrates
construction of the Medina Campus Center

Continuing its commitment to increase access to educational opportunities throughout its four-county service area and citing the growth of enrollment at the Albion Campus Center, officials from Genesee Community College began the construction of the second Orleans County Campus Center in Medina. more

New security procedures in place at BCSD
All visitors to the Brockport Central School District will sign-in at the greeter's desk, located by the main entrance at each school, as they typically do. However, they will now be required to show a valid form of picture identification. more

Spencerport School administrator placed on leave
A Spencerport School administrator, Terry Hedges, was issued an appearance ticket on May 16, requiring to appear in Ogden Town Court on June 5 to answer to a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a 13-year-old boy. The district placed Hedges, a 31-year employee, on administrative leave following the issuance of the appearance ticket. more

Spencerport teacher named one of nation's top educators
Mathematics teacher Heather Shaw, from Canal View Elementary School in Spencerport, received the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's highest honor for teaching in these fields. Shaw is the only mathematics winner from New York, and one of 93 teachers nationwide to receive the prestigious award. more

Students create art to help the arts
Holley second grader Alexandria Edwards holds the candy dish she made which is one of 20 that students in grades 2 to 6 created to raffle the evening of the school budget vote. One student from each class was asked to volunteer to make a dish. more

Young inventors show their creations
Students from the Terry A. Taylor Elementary School in Spencerport entered the "Invention Club" in November 2006 led by second grade teacher, Anna Rivoli. This club was designed to challenge minds of young inventors to develop a new product, or already existing item that needs improving or enhancing. more

Chili Golden Agers plan events
Members of Chili Golden Agers have several events planned for June. The business meeting on June 5 convenes at 1 p.m. at the Chili Senior Center. A third reading and vote on several key by-laws amendments is a main discussion item. more

Corinne York, recreation intern at the Sweden Senior Center, arranged for Betty Perkins-Carpenter, Ph.D., former U.S. Olympic Women's Diving Coach, founder of Fit By Five and president of Senior Fitness Productions, Inc. which is dedicated to providing seniors with education about the benefits of physical fitness, to speak at the center. more

Senior Center honored
The Omicron Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at SUNY Brockport awarded the Sweden Senior Center with its Community Service Grant for the center's outstanding service to area senior citizens. more

Holley names 40 Scholar Athletes for spring season
According to the Holley Athletic Department, three Holley spring athletic teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA, Inc. Team Scholar Athlete Award during the 2007 season. In order to qualify, a team must have a team grade point average of 90 percent or above. more

Local gymnast takes silver at championships
Eighteen year-old Bright Raven gymnast Kerry Apeland of Chili took second place on balance beam (9.40) at the USAG Level 9 Eastern Championships held in Florida, May 13. Apeland also played a valuable role as a member of the Region 6 winning team. more
