Baseball cap donations sought for shipment to soldiers in Iraq
A recent column in the Rochester daily newspaper written by Mark Hare was enormously successful in making the wish of a U.S. soldier in Iraq come true. Army Captain Anton C. Smith, who attended school in Brockport through the urban suburban transfer program and whose mother, a retired social worker living in Churchville, shared with Hare that he and fellow soldiers often play baseball to relax. He said having some jerseys and caps would make it easier to differentiate the teams and make the relaxation activity a bit more fun. more

Bishop to preside at 25th anniversary Mass
Bishop Matthew Clark will preside at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 5, to conclude celebrations honoring the first 25 years of service to the church in Hamlin and the wider community. A parish picnic will follow the celebration of Mass on the church's grounds at the corner of Brick-Schoolhouse Road and the West Fork of Lake Road in Hamlin. This will conclude the parish's celebrations of 25 years. more

Brockport Summer Art Festival offers returning favorites, new events
For any of the close to 50,000 visitors who visit the Brockport Summer Art Festival August 11 and 12, there will be returning favorites such as unique crafters, wide varieties of food vendors, children’s activities, the annual Duck Derby and the Farmers Market. Additionally, planners are offering two new activities - a wine tasting event and a mini health fair. more

Calling all pie makers
The Churchville Country Fair will be August 18 and 19 and on Saturday, The Star of the West Mill will sponsor the pie contest. Entry forms and rules are available from August 6 to August 16 at the Star of the West Milling Co., 35 South Main Street, Churchville. more

New children's librarian at Seymour Library
"When I drove up to the Seymour Library for the first time I thought, Whoa! It's beautiful!" said Kathleen Phillips, the library's newest staff member. Phillips began her position as children's librarian on Monday, July 16. She succeeds Kelly Deltoro-White who resigned for medical reasons. more

Next step for firehouse plans discussed
The inflated price tag, cost-cutting measures and what they could, and could not live with in a scaled back station house were the topics on the table when the commissioners in the Spencerport Fire District gathered on August 2 as they discussed their options with the rebuilding of Spencerport Fire District’s Station 1. more

Rochester Civic Garden Center offers garden classes at Springdale Farm
Area gardeners can join Nellie Gardner, Springdale Farm's horticulturist, during the Summer Tour of Flower Fields: Landscaping for Beauty and Cut Flowers on Thursday, August 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nellie creates hundreds of amazing bouquets every summer for sale at Flower Fields at Springdale Farm, and almost every week makes all the arrangements for one or more weddings entirely from flowers and greens harvested at the farm in Ogden. more

Parma Greece UCC welcomes former pastor
On August 12, 2007, the congregation at Parma Greece United Church of Christ will welcome Reverend Robert Hathaway, pastor emeritus, to the pulpit. Rev. Hathaway served at PGUCC from July 1947 through July 1957 and has held a long affiliation with the church. more

Soap Box Derby comes back to Brockport

STAR rebate applications being mailed
The Middle Class STAR Rebate program is underway. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) will be mailing all 2007 Basic STAR exemption recipients a packet of rebate materials around August 20. Once the packet is received, respond to the DTF by mail or online www.nystax.gov and submit the information requested. This is a one-time application as future Middle Class STAR rebates will automatically be checked by DTF. more

Summer camp at Northpoint
In a word - methodical. That’s how Sophia Jordan would describe the red team’s domination over the other colors. The second grader from Pinebrook Elementary credited her team’s planning and execution after taking home bragging rights at the closing ceremony for the first week of Color Wars at YMCA’s Camp Northpoint. more

BOCES 2 retiree raises the most donations
Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES retiree Anna Hull, (center) of the gifted and talented department is "Stepping Out to Cure" scleroderma. Together with her sister, Jane Risolo (left), and daughter, Jennifer (right) they raised $2,506. Their donation was the most money raised for the scleroderma walk recently held at Seneca Park and Hull and her team the "Hare Raisers" (her maiden name was Hare) brought home the trophy. more

Holley Board appoints elementary principal
The Holley Board of Education appointed William Ottman as elementary principal at its July 23 meeting. He has served as elementary assistant principal since October 2006. more

The Brockport Central School District Board of Education appointed Amy Margolis assistant principal at the Ginther School She began her new role July 1. Margolis succeeds Rosemary Custer who was promoted to principal upon the retirement of Ann Sweeting. more

The copper siding shimmers in the late July sunshine -- students returning to campus in a few weeks will be putting the new facilities at the R. Thomas Golisano Library at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili to good use. more

Spencerport school pool building to come down
Demolition of the pool at Spencerport High School begins Wednesday, August 8, when crews will start to demolish the building around the pool. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin at around 9 a.m. There will be an area for spectators to watch the start of demolition, according to district officials. more

Students organize corporate classic Golf Tournament
Brockport High School Sport Management students held their first-ever golf tournament, The Corporate Classic, for fellow students in the Corporate Communications Class at BHS. The four-person scramble held at the end of the school year at Deerfield Country Club was a team building activity featuring 56 golfers and included a putting challenge, two longest drive contests, closest to the pin challenge, team trivia contest and a Habits of the Mind contest (character education). more

Teacher helps with Bergen Swamp snake research
Steven Locke, science instructor at Byron-Bergen High School and trustee of the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society, spent several days in the Bergen Swamp conducting research with Kevin Shoemaker, a graduate student at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University who is studying the conservation of the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. more

Hunter safety course scheduled
Instructors certified by the Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct a Hunter Safety Course September 4, 5 and 8 at the North Star Sportsman's Club in Hamlin. Those interested in attending may register in-person at the Clerk's Office, Town of Parma located at 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road, Hilton, NY, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. more

Hunter safety course planned
The Holley Rod & Gun Club will hold the N.Y.S. Basic Hunter Education Course at the club grounds on Pumping Station Road, south of the Village of Holley. more

Lady Express Red win two tournaments
The Lady Express Red 16 & under girls fastpitch softball team won out of town tournaments on consecutive weekends. more

Memorial 5K steps off in Bergen August 11
The 2007 Jenny Kuzma Memorial 5K is set for Saturday, August 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Village Park (Hickory Park) on Route 19 in Bergen. The race benefits a student scholarship for an 8th grader at Byron-Bergen Central School and this year proceeds will also benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times and Roswell Park's Pediatric Unit. This is the 17th running of the race. more
