Free cancer prevention and survival cooking course begins
The Cancer Project, a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing cancer prevention through education and research, is offering a free, eight-session cooking course designed to help people prevent and survive cancer through proper diet and nutrition. more

Monroe County produce growers get help with food safety
The ripple effects caused by foodborne illness outbreaks are scary for the victims - estimated to be upwards of 76 million a year - and the many businesses who are responsible for production, processing and distribution of food. With just a rumor of microbial outbreak, well-intentioned food producers can be out of business for good. more

Riga, Churchville joint plan still needs tweaking
The Riga Town Board and Churchville Village Board held a special meeting August 30 to discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan. Officials are working with consultant John Steinmetz of Steinmetz Planning Group to finalize the vision plan before holding a public hearing. Members of both boards discussed wording and content of the 100-plus page proposal for almost three hours and will meet again to review updates and changes before a public hearing is scheduled. more

Shoreline clean-up day planned in Orleans County
Each year the Orleans County Water Quality Coordinating Committee facilitates a cleanup event along the shores of several streams and water bodies within the county. This event is sponsored by the American Littoral Society and coincides with the Annual New York State Beach Cleanup. The event will be held Saturday, September 15. more

Spencerport toddler gets to 'Make a Wish'
Three-year-old Ty Vining, son of Laurie Coleman of Spencerport, has been through a lot in his short little life, but Coleman said that every day with him has been a blessing. "I don't know what I would do without him in my life," she said. more

State website on bridge conditions is expanded
New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) expanded the department's website detailing the condition of all the highway bridges in New York state. The site, www.nysdot.gov/bridgedata, includes the state condition rating for each bridge. more

The Chili Public Library is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday hours (1 to 4 p.m.) begin October 7. more

Village of Spencerport introducing garbage toter program
Responding to requests from residents to purchase large garbage toters from local home improvement stores, the Village of Spencerport is initiating a new, voluntary Garbage Toter program. The village is purchasing a new refuse truck equipped to lift and dump toters and will be retrofitting the existing refuse truck to lift and dump the toters as well. more

Hands-on firefighter training class set
The Hamlin Fire Department is hosting East Coast training class for firefighters. This class will teach future instructors vehicle safety. Today's vehicles are constructed differently, they can be hybrids, and they could run on alternative fuels. This class will teach how to approach, extinguish, protect and help save lives. more

Hilton honors firemen and other heroes of September 11
The film, "We Were Also Killed" will be shown Tuesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. at the Community Center, 59 Henry Street, Hilton. Veterans For Peace, Keemer-Riordon Chapter and Rochester 9/11 Truth are sponsoring the 45-minute film. more

Chili Republican Committee endorses candidates
The Town of Chili Republican Committee unanimously endorsed incumbent Chili Town Council members Ginny Ignatowski and Michael Slattery in the September 18 Republican Primary. "I have had the privilege to work with Michael since 1999 and Ginny since 2003. They both have a proven track record and are dedicated to making Chili the best community for our residents," said Chili Republican Chairman Bernard Iacovangelo. more

Clarkson Democrats announce candidate for town board
The Clarkson Democratic Committee said Sheldon Meyers will run for Clarkson Town Board in the November election. more

Sweden Democratic Committee names town board candidate
The Sweden Democratic Committee endorsed Jeffrey Davignon for Sweden Town Board in this November's election. Davignon, 37, is a member of the Seymour Library Board of Trustees and the Village of Brockport's Code Review Committee. more

September is Campus Fire Safety month
September has been named Campus Fire Safety month. "Every September, millions of parents send their children off to college, some for the first time. These young people will now be living independently. In many instances, they will have their first experience cooking for themselves. In this context, it's very important to recognize the danger of fire and the need to make college living environments as safe as possible," Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez said. "Working sprinklers, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers are all important," she continued. "Young people should also remember to follow warning labels on the proper use of extension cords." more

Spencerport school district leader retiring
Spencerport Superintendent of Schools Mary Anne Kermis will resign with the intent to retire on December 21, 2007. "I've always enjoyed working with the staff in this district and feel that they are world-class," said Kermis. "The next superintendent will be fortunate to inherit such a truly wonderful staff." more

SUNY Brockport expands career services
SUNY College at Brockport has hired Phyllis Griswold MSEd/NCC/LMHC to the Office of Career Services as a career counselor. In her position, Griswold will serve graduate students and develop career services for alumni, both on the Brockport campus and at the Career Services Satellite Center at the MetroCenter. more

SUNY College at Brockport will host its annual Homecoming Weekend September 13 through 16. Students, family, alumni and the community are invited to attend a wide-range of events on the college campus throughout the weekend. more

Sweden Senior Center celebrates accreditation
The Sweden Senior Center in Brockport will celebrate its national accreditation with events at the center on Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15. The center, at 133 State Street, became the first nationally accredited senior center in Monroe County earlier this year. more

Cadets fall to Spartans
Hilton opened its 2007 boy's volleyball season with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 loss to a strong Gates-Chili squad. After not having a lead in the first two games, the Cadets led by as many as eight points in game three before struggling to score late. more

First place champs
The Spencerport Vipers (Boys U11) ended their Division I 2007 Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL) season as first place champions with a 10-1-1 record. more

Black Belt earned
The SUNY Brockport Youth and Family Tae Kwon Do Program announced that long time member and SUNY Brockport alum Carolyn Arnold passed the requirements to become the latest Black Belt in the program. more
