Ambassador Program to bring college, businesses closer
What would seem to be a natural partnership between SUNY Brockport and local businesses may have been overlooked in the past, but not anymore. Mike Andriatch of the Brockport Foundation is spearheading a new program to promote the connection between the college and businesses in the Brockport community and beyond. more

Clarendon Lions have successful year
The Clarendon Lions Club has had an excellent year. The club earned money from its geranium sale, mint sales, sausage and hot dog sale at the Clarendon K&K and at the Clarendon Festival. The annual yard/garage sale in September 2000 went very well and another is scheduled for this September. more

Holley to offer glimpses of its history
as part of
sesquicentennial celebration
Calling it the "biggest birthday party you have ever been invited to," the finishing touches are being put on the Village of Holley's Sesquicentennial Celebration. The village will be celebrating the 150th year of its incorporation this year. more

Park Ridge Youth Outreach offers youth programs
The Park Ridge Youth Outreach Program will be offering several workshops and programs for youth of various ages throughout the summer, including Home Alone and Safe for ages 8-11, August 16, 10 a.m. - noon, and Babysitting Training for ages 11-13, August 14 from 10 a.m.- noon. more

Retired Spencerport teacher to celebrate 100th birthday
When retired Spencerport teacher Mildred Snyder turns 100 on August 5, her family hopes she will have 100 birthday cards to open. The Spencerport Retired Teachers Association is helping by asking current and retired teachers to send in the cards, which they're doing. Some even had their classes make cards for Snyder. more

State Fair advance tickets go on sale
Don't miss out on the opportunity to explore exhibits and discover top name entertainment, performers and family fun at the 2001 New York State Fair in Syracuse. Discount $4 fair admission tickets are available at hundreds of outlets throughout New York state. The reduced price tickets are a $4 savings off the regular $8 admission price. The discount program runs through and includes August 22 - the day before the 2001 Fair begins. The 155th fair will run August 23 through September 3. more

Town of Parma’s annual celebration set for August 4
If summer’s at its halfway point (and it is), then it must be time for Parma’s annual summer celebration – "Park It In Parma." Set for Saturday, August 4, the free event offers plenty of family activities culminating with a giant fireworks display. All the events will be held at the Parma Town Park at 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road. more

West Nile Virus still a threat
State Health officials continue to encourage New Yorkers to continue to report dead birds, particularly crows, to their local health departments or via a toll free number (1-866-537-BIRD). Tracking the numbers of dead crows will help measure the potential human health risk from the West Nile Virus. Also critical are continued efforts to remove areas of standing water where mosquitoes breed. more

ABC Quilts Sewing Bee to be held
Area sewers are invited to the ABC Quilts Bee Saturday, August 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at United Methodist Church of North Chili, 2200 Westside Drive at Buffalo Road. The focus of the bee is to finish at least 30 quilts for display at the church's annual Quilt Show September 14 and 15 before distribution to Strong Hospital for HIV-positive and other at-risk area children. more

Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Museum hosts book signing/art show
The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society will host a book signing of author Janet Winn Korpela's book "Ira Winn: Lighthouse Pioneer" on Saturday, August 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Museum. Korpela, granddaughter of Ira Winn, uses hand written accounts to tell of her grandfather's contributions in the building of early American lighthouses. more

Clarkson Concerts continue with Gary the Happy Pirate
Gary the Happy Pirate is the scheduled performer at the July 30 Clarkson Concert. All concerts are held in front of the new lodge at the park. more

German Fest at Gates Park
The three day German Fest will be held Friday, August 10 from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, August 11 from 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday, August 12 from noon to 9 p.m. at the German Cultural Center Grounds at Gates Memorial Park, 150 Spencerport Road (Route 31). more

Jon Stewart to appear at SUNY Brockport
The Daily Show's funny front man Jon Stewart will be performing on Saturday, September 22, at 8 p.m. in the Tuttle North Gym on the SUNY Brockport campus. more

Monroe County announces web site address change
The new Monroe County web site address is www.monroecounty.gov. more

Sweden rezoning request withdrawn
A July 24 public hearing on a request for rezoning of land on the south side of Brockport Spencerport Road in Sweden was canceled because the applicant withdrew the request. David Paul had asked the town board to rezone some of his property from residential to business and light industrial. Several neighboring residents had protested the change and the town board had seemed unlikely to grant the request. more

Trimmer Road bridge, Spencerport, open to traffic
The bridge that carries Trimmer Road over the Erie Canal in Spencerport, Monroe County, opened to traffic Wednesday, July 25. Work crews refurbished the structure during the month-long closing.

BOCES 2 elects board officers
The Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Board of Education recently re-elected Daniel Cole as president and Janet Stander as vice president of the board for the 2001-2002 school year. more

California here they come
Some area 4 sixth graders were viewing the Ansel Adams photography exhibit at the George Eastman House as one of their preparations for their "People to People Student Ambassadors" trip to Yosemite National Park in July. These students are part of a group of 47 students from the Buffalo/Rochester area who will join a group of 10 from Cincinnati, Ohio. more

Students tour Brockport Post Office
Fifth graders from the Brockport Migrant Education program recently had a tour of the Brockport Post Office including a close-up look at a mail truck. more

SUNY Empire State College holds information sessions
The Genesee Valley Center of SUNY Empire State College will hold public information sessions throughout August at its location at 1475 Winton Road North, Rochester. College representatives will be on hand to answer questions about its unique, individualized study programs which can lead to an associate or bachelor's degree. more

AARP Defensive Driving Course - for adults age 50+ on Friday, September 14 and 21 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Participants must attend both days. Batavia Downs racetrack to reopen
Governor George E. Pataki has signed into law a measure that will help reopen the Batavia Downs Racetrack by enabling Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation to apply to the State Racing and Wagering Board for a license to operate the track. more

Chili Wildcats defeated Hilton Heat
Gates Chili recently held its annual soccer tournament. In the championship game for Travel Girls 13 and Under, the Chili Wildcats beat Hilton Heat in an overtime shoot-out, 3-2. more

Eddie Meath All-Star football roster includes area students
The 19th Annual Eddie Meath All-Star football game was scheduled for July 29 at Fauver Stadium. more

Girls' field hockey camp offered

Golfers sought for Invest in Youth Golf Tournament
The Gates Chili Family Branch of the YMCA of Greater Rochester will hold its 2nd Annual Invest in Youth Golf Tournament on Friday, August 3, at Deerfield Country Club in Brockport. Sponsored by Heidelberg, the tournament will help raise scholarship monies for underprivileged community youth to participate in YMCA programs. more

Waterfowl ID classes offered for hunters
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama and Shelby, hosts two waterfowl identification classes at the refuge headquarters building at 1101 Casey Road, Alabama. Classes will be on Monday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 29 and will run from 7 until approximately 10 or 11 p.m. There is no charge, but attendance will be limited to 65 people per class and registration is required. more
