Churchville proposed tax rate would remain the same
A shortfall in the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department's annual budget has delayed the passage of the Village of Churchville's 2002-2003 budget, which trustees voted to table following a public hearing January 7, until their next meeting, January 21. more

Former resident Gary Lessord's art exhibited in New York City
The Society of Illustrators has asked national and international award winning artist Gary Lessord of Orlando to exhibit his art in a special fundraising event in New York City. The Memorial Exhibition, entitled Prevailing Human Spirit, will honor the heroism and humanity demonstrated in the wake of the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001. more

Hilton woman carries Olympic Torch
This year, Hilton resident Shirley 'Sparky' Hess took a brisk walk to welcome in the New Year, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting days of her life. The long-time Hilton School District volunteer had the honor of carrying the Olympic torch down Route 5, Main Street in Amherst, NY. Hess was part of the Atlanta to Salt Lake torch relay, which is going through 46 states before it gets to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. more

Mayor addresses Brockport's successes
Even while, in recent months, the Village of Brockport has been under the cloud of scandal, there are many successes that should be celebrated by the administration and the community, Mayor Josephine Matela said in an address to the board at their first meeting of 2002 on January 7. more

Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund opens
The Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund offers help to families who have a one-time emergency and don't qualify for government assistance to pay their heating bills. more

Residents voice concerns over Diaz chemicals
The smell from the January 5 Diaz chemical release still hung in the air as residents filled the village hall for the January 8 board meeting. About 80 gallons of chemicals were released into the air, and according to some of the residents, into their homes. The chemicals released were a mixture of phenolics with toluene and water. more

Spencerport Area C of C names award winners
The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual awards dinner on Friday, January 25 at the Whittier Party House. Social time begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The music department from Spencerport High School will provide entertainment. more

Churchville congregation to celebrate sesquicentennial
The Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Churchville will spend this year celebrating its 150th birthday. Festivities will begin on February 24 with a balloon release and dedication of the restored stained glass windows, with church members dressing in period clothing. more

Flu Shot Clinics scheduled in Monroe County
Monroe County health officials believe the flu is slowly making its way to the Rochester region, with several cases confirmed to date. For those who have not received the flu vaccine, more clinics are scheduled. more

Hamlin Fire officers named
The Hamlin Fire Department and the Hamlin Fire District elections were held in December 2001. Ronald Breslawski was re-elected as Hamlin Fire District commissioner for a five year term beginning January 1, 2002. more

Ogden Library features special Sunday program
The Ogden Farmers' Library will be open Sunday, January 27 from noon to 4 p.m. for a special Genealogy and Local History program. Speakers are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. more

Ogden's Friends of the Library accepting donations for garage sale
The Friends of the Ogden Farmers' Library are currently accepting donations for their annual garage sale, scheduled this year for February 8 and 9. more

Parma employee's commitment to community recognized
Karen Strauss' contributions to the Parma community will be highlighted during a retirement party at the Hilton Exempt Club, 137 South Avenue, Hilton on Thursday, January 24. Deadline for reservations is January 21. No tickets will be available at the door. more

Parma Public Library receives gift from area business
The Parma Public Library is pleased to announce the gift of nine new magazine subscriptions courtesy of Curves for Women, a new fitness center owned by Sharon DeGregorio, located at 109 Lake Avenue in the village of Hilton. The Town of Riga Recreation De-partment and Churchville Lions Club will hold a Winter Festival on Sunday, January 13. This full day of fun is free of charge and all family members are welcome. more

Walk for Wellness set for February 24
The fourth annual Cancer Action Walk for Wellness will be held at the Greece Ridge Mall on Sunday, February 24. The two-mile indoor walk can be completed anytime between 9 a.m. and noon. Churchville-Chili 2002 kindergarten registration scheduled
All residents in the Churchville-Chili School District will be registering their incoming kindergarten children at the district's Central Office, 139 Fairbanks Road. Parents will receive packets in the mail. Anyone who does not receive a packet but believes they should, can call 293-1800, extension 2041. Registration will not be accepted at any of the C-C elementary schools. more

Basketball Classic yields donation to charity
Spencerport Central Schools, Roberts Wesleyan College and Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester together have donated $500 to Strong Memorial Hospital's Childhood Cancer Center. more

Bright Raven gymnasts compete in Graffiti Invitational
Bright Raven Gymnastics brought home three team banners and many individual honors competing among 24 teams at the 2002 Graffiti Invitational held January 4-6 at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. more

Children receive Judo promotions at family night
The Renshinkan Judo Dojo awarded rank promotions to many of its students during its semi-annual Family Night. Students invited their parents, friends and family members to participate in an evening event dedicated to their families. more

Hilton Raiders Cheerleaders host fundraiser for Florida trip
The Hilton Raiders Cheerleading Team, Grand Champions of The Festival of Lights Regional Cheerleading Competition, are on their way to the UCA National Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida. The cheerleaders will be hosting a spaghetti dinner and trade show/vendor bazaar on Saturday, January 19 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Village Elementary School in Hilton. The $6 entrance fee includes dinner and entry to the trade show and vendor bazaar. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Show hours are 4 to 9 p.m. more

Mason, Rossignolo lead saints
Kyle Mason scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, and Jeremy Rossignolo made 42 saves in net as the Churchville-Chili Saints won their first hockey game of the season 3-2 over Spencerport January 3. more

Hilton's wrestling team registered six pins over thirteen matches as they romped over Batavia 56-15 January 5. more

Sutherland nips Rangers
Pittsford-Sutherland used strong defensive play and survived several long volleys as they defeated Spencerport 30-15, 28-30, 31-29 and 30-24 January 5 in girl's volleyball. more
