Eastern Orleans United Way campaign falling critically short of goal
The Eastern Orleans County United Way/Red Cross Campaign is nearing the end of its appeal. United Way leadership and volunteers say they are very concerned that the community goal is in jeopardy, which may mean a reduction in funding for area services and programs. United Way officials project that the campaign could fall as much as $10,000 short of its $151,500 goal. more

Gift Angel program brings books to children
Lift Bridge Book Shop's Gift Angel program offers an opportunity for area residents to help provide gift books at the holiday season for needy families in the Brockport-Clarkson-Hamlin area. From now until December 24, residents can participate at Lift Bridge Book Shop, 45 Main Street, Brockport. The outreach effort is now in its ninth year. more

Hamlin residents are hooked on reading
Residents looking for a Hamlin hot spot might want to check out the library. Or chances are they already have. Traffic was up 73 percent in 2002 over the previous year. Circulation in September 2003 was recorded at 4,300 pieces loaned out. That is a 21 percent increase from just a year ago. more

Holley Police welcome visitors at Open House
The Holley Police Department took part in the "Public Square Re-Opening" celebration on October 25 by conducting an open house which allowed members of the community the chance to have a tour of the police facility, meet with local police officers, receive information on child safety, receive a free gun lock kit and have their children fingerprinted. more

Lakeside Hospital adds fluoroscope to imaging center
Patients in need of digital fluoroscopy services now have to travel no further than Lakeside Health System. New equipment has been purchased, renovations have been completed for the installation of the fluoroscopic equipment and patients are reaping the rewards of the new technologies. more

Library holds 3rd annual Gingerbread House Contest
Entries in the Ogden Farmers' Library 2003 Gingerbread House Contest must be delivered to the library at 269 Ogden Center Road by 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. The houses will be on display through Friday, December 19. Judging will take place on Saturday, December 20 at noon, with winners announced at 1 p.m. that day. more

Local TV producer wins Grand Prize at video festival
Tara L. Lavigne, producer of PROFILE! Magazine, recently won "Best of Show" at the Northeast Alliance for Community Media's Video Festival in Portland, Maine. A total of 350 entrants competed from seven states in the Northeast region for the Grand Prize. Her show also won 1st Place for Documentary and 1st Place for Magazine Series. more

Monroe County Water Authority replacing old lines
On Route 31, from Route 259 all the way to the Route 19 intersection in Brockport, a major project is bringing about the replacement of water mains in an effort to increase service reliability and to provide better transmission capacity. The lines are being installed within the rights of way and along obtained easements. more

New funding for local trails available
According to representatives of the Genesee Region Trails Coalition, November 2003 begins the grant-making cycle of the trail program. Applications are available on-line at www.grtcinc.org. more

New legislation expected to reduce identity theft
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece) says he has good news for New York consumers. A new law will provide new protections for consumers to help them from being victimized by identity theft criminals. more

Seat belt crackdown targets Americans driving unbuckled
The national safety belt use rate is the highest it has ever been at 79 percent, but that still leaves nearly 60 million Americans, who are disproportionately teens and young adults, risking their lives and driving unbuckled, according to police officials. more

State archives seeks applicants for educational grants
The New York State Archives is seeking applicants for grants that fund projects using local government records in the classroom. The funding is available to any New York State local government including public schools, teacher centers, BOCES, towns, villages, cities, counties, cooperative extensions and others. more

Buy a bulb to light up Sweden center's Memories of Love tree
On December 10, at the Sweden Senior Center, the lighting of the Memories of Love memorial tree will take place on the west lawn of the center, 133 State Street, at 7 p.m. The planned program will include entertainment, caroling and refreshments. more

Parma Archery holds club shoot
Parma Archers was formed 14 months ago when two Hilton bowmen, Al Howe and Bert Marlatt, thought that target archery needed some recognition. The two men talked with friends and soon Parma Archers was formed. more
