The eight annual Harvest Festival to benefit the Sweden Farmers Museum will be held on Saturday, September 21 at Lakeview Cemetery (Route 19, just south of Route 31).
WBEE’s Jeremy Newman will be hosting the event for the first time this year. Another first will be beer tastings/wing pairings provided by the Stoneyard Restaurant. The Festival begins at 10 a.m. and features craft demonstrations, a tractor show, tours of the cemetery and museum, food and music and children’s activities. One of the featured entertainers is the Rick Howe Band.
The annual tug-of-war between the Sweden Highway Department and Brockport Department of Works will determine who gets to display the golden pitchfork for the coming year. Farmer Don’s kiddie parade will be held at 2 p.m. with children encouraged to wear their farmer’s best. Judging of the apple pie contest will be at 2:30 p.m. Entries are welcome. The Fountain at Lakeside Cemetery has been restored and will be operable for the first time in many years. A short dedication ceremony will take place during the festival.
The 5K Race has been dedicated to the memory of Staff Sgt. Nick Reid who died December 12, 2012 of injuries sustained in Sperwan Village, Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Reid was a 2004 graduate of Brockport High School and was serving in his second deployment to Afghanistan as a member of the 3rd Ordnance Battalion. The race begins at 9 a.m. and winds along a scenic and challenging course along the Niagara Escarpment. Prizes will be awarded to the top runners in several categories. Proceeds from the race and festival will be used to install a gazebo in Staff Sgt. Reid’s memory.
Race registration forms are available at the Sweden Town Hall, the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center and on-line at www.swedenfarmersmuseum.org. Registrations can also be made on the day of the race.
