BROCKPORT: Avery, Arden R., 91, of Brockport, NY/Flat Rock, NC, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026. Born and raised in North Rose, NY, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation and married his high school sweetheart, Lorna. Together, they headed for Germany, where he served in the 11th Airborne Division. After completing his service, they returned to Brockport, where he began a farming career that spanned more than 30 years. Always a hard worker, he operated two farms for many years and continued to be involved even after moving to North Carolina.
In NC, he transferred his farming experience to a passion for gardening and to working as a groundskeeper at a children’s camp – a job he enjoyed until retirement. Always social, he and Lorna were fond of meeting up with friends. They also loved dancing and were active members of the Southern Lights Square and Round Dance Club. After approximately 30 years, health issues compelled them to return to WNY for the final years of life.

Good-hearted, Arden never met a stranger and touched many lives with his kindness. In particular, he took great pride in his family. Teaching his children and their children by example, he instilled the value of hard work balanced with time for fun with family and friends. He also demonstrated generosity to others and appreciation of others’ generosity. For instance, having overseen the construction of three family homes, he utilized those skills during his early retirement by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. In his later years, he was delighted by friends and family dropping in and Meals on Wheels volunteers lingering to chat.
Arden was predeceased by his wife and square-dancing partner of 60 years, Lorna. He is survived by their five children: Laurie (Dale) Williams of Wagram, NC; Arden “Bill” (Kathie) of Batavia, NY; Kirk (Pam Ross) of Canton, GA; Greg (Sundae) of Brockport, NY; and Karla (Steve) Hardin of Angier, NC. He was also blessed with the love and admiration of 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition, he is survived by his brother, Keith (Gloria) of Brockport, NY; sister, Ella (Dave) Guthrie of Mesa, AZ; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Messineo of Tioga, PA. Two siblings predeceased Arden: Glen Avery and Arlene (Al) Miraglia.
Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.
