Videoconference offers guidance in dealing with caregiving and loss
"Caregiving and Loss: Family Needs, Professional Responses" a live-via-satellite videoconference on Wednesday, April 18 at 1 p.m., will examine ways that counseling and healthcare professionals can better assist family caregivers. more

Hickok Center for Brain Injury seeks board members
The Hickok Center for Brain Injury, a clubhouse-model day program for adult survivors of brain injury, is seeking board members to begin two-year terms in May. Individuals with experience in nonprofit agencies and a desire to assist adult survivors of brain injuries should apply. Among the positions available is that of Board Treasurer. more

Pet owners are invited to a new Genesee Community College seminar on animal medical emergencies, Saturdays, April 21 to May 5, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Batavia Campus. more

Reference guide of elected officials available at area public libraries
"WHO REPRESENTS YOU in 2001," the League of Women Voters' popular guide to elected officials for Monroe County, became available in local libraries in March. This free list of phone numbers and addresses includes the U.S. President, state representatives and senators, county legislators, city council members, town supervisors and village mayors. The pamphlet was financed by a grant from the Democrat and Chronicle in partnership with the Gannett Foundation. more

Residents asked to recycle old license plates
Residents and businesses receiving new New York State license plates can recyle their old plates instead of placing them in the trash. more

Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. will begin its annual safety survey of natural gas service lines next week in parts of the city and several area towns. more

SUNY Brockport hosts world hunger dinner
SUNY College at Brockport will host a World Hunger Dinner, April 26 at 5:30 p.m., to promote awareness of the pressing problems of hunger and poverty. The dinner will be held at the Brockway Dining Hall on the SUNY Brockport campus. more

Brockport Barclay students entertained by world-renowned dancers
Second and third-graders at the Barlcay Elementary School in Brockport were recently treated to a performance by Second Hand Dance. The performers make sculptural shapes with their bodies while using unusual props. Prior to the performance, students attended workshops to learn some of the techniques used in Second Hand Dance. more

Brockport CSD celebrates Music In Our Schools Month
March marks the national celebration of Music In Our Schools Month. Students at the Barclay Elementary School helped to celebrate this year's theme of "Music ... Pass It On!" through two musical performances: "Open a Book" and "That's What Friends Are For." They performed at their school and at The Landing Nursing Home in Brockport. Concerts this month included one from the high school choruses as well as a district-wide vocal festival at SUNY Brockport. more

Brockport students get a lesson in leadership
Student leaders from 29 area high schools met to share ideas and gain insight at the Sixth Annual Leadership Conference held at the Nazareth College Arts Center on March 13. Forty-five Brockport High School students were among the 437 in attendance. The conference was sponsored by District II of the New York State Advisor Student Association. more

Byron-Bergen to celebrate 50 years of centralization
This year marks the 50th anniversary celebration of the Byron-Bergen School District centralization. The Alumni Association will join with the 50th Anniversary committee in a special celebration at the high school on Saturday, May 19. All past and present school and community members are invited to join in the celebration. more

C-C Leo Club committed to community service
The Churchville-Chili Junior High Leo Club held its annual charity basketball game against the Churchville Lions Club on March 18. This year's event was held to benefit Alternatives For Battered Women and a total $557 in sponsor pledges were collected. more

C-C students compete in State Math League Finals
Four Churchville-Chili students will be at the New York State Math League finals on March 31. Andrew Meyers, a senior, was selected for the Monroe County A Team and Rebecca Sillick, a junior, for the B Team. Matt George, a sophomore, and Kathryn Knowles, a freshman, are alternates for the finals, which take place at Manhasset High School on Long Island. The students were among 1,300 Monroe County students competing at Math League meets throughout the year. more

C-C's US FIRST Robotics Team heads to national competition
A team of C-C technology students will be heading to Florida with career and technical education teacher Jason Rees for the 2001 FIRST Robotics national competition April 5 to 7. more

Hilton students jump to serve community
Ninety-three students of the Hilton Central School District jumped rope on March 3 to help the community. The annual Jump Rope-A-Thon For Heart raised money for the local chapter of the American Heart Association. The students raised $4,204.50 during the three hour event. This is Hilton's 18th year for holding the Jump-A-Thon and, although participation is somewhat smaller than in the past, participants had a great deal of fun at this family-oriented event. more

Spencerport Board of Education
honors three district employees
The Spencerport Board of Education honored three Spencerport School District employees at the board's March 13 meeting. Superintendent Phillip Langton introduced the three who were recognized for their recent accomplishments: Anthony Lipani, Heather Shaw and Mark Lavner. Board President Larry Fenity presented each with a Certificate of Recognition. more

Spencerport Odyssey of the Mind team places fifth in state
A Taylor Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team placed fifth in the state tournament the weekend of March 17. The team built a structure that held more than 300 pounds. A Spencerport High School team also competed in the state tournament. more

Two C-C Middle School Teams compete
in Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition
Two C-C Middle School teams competed in the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition at Fairport High School on March 3. Odyssey of the Mind is a program open to K-12 students. It teaches creative problem-solving methods by providing open-ended problems for teams to solve. more

Village Elementary School science fair
to feature 200 exhibits and projects
On Friday, April 6, from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be a Science Fair at Hilton's Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane, featuring the projects and exhibits of over 200 grades one to six students. more

Bright Raven gymnasts take second in Jamestown
Bright Raven Gymnastics' Level 4 Team took second place at the Lucky Star Invitational held at Jamestown Community College March 18. Eighty-one gymnasts represented eight different teams from upstate New York. Bright Raven was second with a team score of 174. The Orchard Park Gymsters took first place with 177.25. more

Northstar grad finishes college career at National Tournament
Jamie Dell (Churchville, Northstar H.S.) finished his Roberts Wesleyan College basketball career in the NAIA National Tournament. Dell played in all 33 games for Roberts as the Raiders (21-12) went to the NAIA National tournament for the first time in school history. more

Students recognized at Brockport basketball banquet
The Brockport basketball season ended with a banquet held on March 11. The coaches, basketball teams, cheerleading squads along with their parents celebrated the year's efforts. Members from each team were recognized along with honoring the year's seniors. more
