Donations sought for benefit auction
The Center for Dispute Settlement is accepting donations now for its benefit auction to support youth initiatives in an eight-county region. The general public is invited to donate goods and services such as gift certificates, jewelry, furniture, antiques, collectibles, art works and house hold items. Items must be in good condition. more

New Erie Canal book published
"Cruising America's Waterways: The Erie Canal" is a new, 224 page book that focuses on the joys of traveling the canals of New York state, including, of course, the world's most famous canal, the Erie. This book, unlike most books that concentrate on canal history, is about the canals (and the Hudson River) as they are today: how to use them; how their unique locks, guard gates, and dams work; and how to enjoy the cultural, recreational, and scenic opportunities they offer along their routes. more
Planning for disasters dinner to be held
The American Baptist Men of the Rochester/Genesee Region and Greece Baptist Church are co-sponsoring a picnic dinner and a viewing of the ABMen's Disaster Relief Trailer. The event will take place on Sunday, August 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The site will be Dean Hall which is on the north side of Greece Baptist Church located at 1230 Long Pond Road (just north of Ridge Road West). Admission is $2 for an individual or $5 for a family. more
Scoutings highest honor presented to North Chili youth
On May 21, Boy Scout Troop 53 held an Eagle Court of Honor for Greg Gallinger. Greg's parents and family have supported Greg in scouting since 1991, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 292. He achieved the rank of Tenderfoot in 1995 with troop 53 and began the trail to Eagle. He held various positions of leadership in the Troop including librarian, scribe, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and, most recently, assistant senior patrol leader. more
Spencerport architectural review needs standards, says trustee
A resolution to suspend all activity of Spencerport's architectural review board until there is an exact definition of what the board is looking for when it says new buildings and renovations in the village commercial district must fit into a "canal town theme" was narrowly defeated at the August 1 board meeting. more
VFW honors local commander
Lester G. Magoffin of Byron, formerly of Spencerport, has achieved All American status as a Veterans of Foreign Wars District Commander. Commander Magoffin will be recognized at the 102nd annual VFW national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August by VFW Commander-in-Chief John F. Gwizdak. more
