The Center for Dispute Settlement (CDS) will host its 13th Annual Awards Luncheon on September 26 "Visions of Peace" at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Daniel Bowling, executive director of the Association for Conflict Resolution (recent merger of SPIDR, The Academy of Family Mediators, and the Conflict Resolution Education Network) will be the keynote speaker. more

Chili VFW Post takes top awards
At the New York State VFW Convention held in Buffalo June 23-25 George Whitney, commander and Chili Memorial VFW Post 412 took the three highest awards in the state for the second year in a row. more

Donations sought for benefit auction
The Center for Dispute Settlement is accepting donations now for its benefit auction to support youth initiatives in an eight-county region. The general public is invited to donate goods and services such as gift certificates, jewelry, furniture, antiques, collectibles, art works and house hold items. Items must be in good condition. more

Lakeside awarded grant from The Kresge Foundation
The Kresge Foundation has awarded Lakeside Memorial Hospital a challenge grant of $300,000 in support of the Lakeside "Building for the Next Generation" Capital Campaign. more

Mount Marcy: New York's highest peak in new book
Mount Marcy is the highest of the Adirondack High Peaks, the tallest point in New York state. Never before has the big story of this mountain been told. Never before has the grandeur and controversy of this mountain been fully explored. Now author, hiker, and historian Sandra Weber has written the first book about Mount Marcy. more

New Erie Canal book published
"Cruising America's Waterways: The Erie Canal" is a new, 224 page book that focuses on the joys of traveling the canals of New York state, including, of course, the world's most famous canal, the Erie. This book, unlike most books that concentrate on canal history, is about the canals (and the Hudson River) as they are today: how to use them; how their unique locks, guard gates, and dams work; and how to enjoy the cultural, recreational, and scenic opportunities they offer along their routes. more

Planning for disasters dinner to be held
The American Baptist Men of the Rochester/Genesee Region and Greece Baptist Church are co-sponsoring a picnic dinner and a viewing of the ABMen's Disaster Relief Trailer. The event will take place on Sunday, August 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The site will be Dean Hall which is on the north side of Greece Baptist Church located at 1230 Long Pond Road (just north of Ridge Road West). Admission is $2 for an individual or $5 for a family. more

Scoutings highest honor presented to North Chili youth
On May 21, Boy Scout Troop 53 held an Eagle Court of Honor for Greg Gallinger. Greg's parents and family have supported Greg in scouting since 1991, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 292. He achieved the rank of Tenderfoot in 1995 with troop 53 and began the trail to Eagle. He held various positions of leadership in the Troop including librarian, scribe, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and, most recently, assistant senior patrol leader. more

Spencerport architectural review needs standards, says trustee
A resolution to suspend all activity of Spencerport's architectural review board until there is an exact definition of what the board is looking for when it says new buildings and renovations in the village commercial district must fit into a "canal town theme" was narrowly defeated at the August 1 board meeting. more

VFW honors local commander
Lester G. Magoffin of Byron, formerly of Spencerport, has achieved All American status as a Veterans of Foreign Wars District Commander. Commander Magoffin will be recognized at the 102nd annual VFW national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August by VFW Commander-in-Chief John F. Gwizdak. more

BISCO - dedicated to local youth
For seven years, BISCO (Brockport Integrated Service and Community Organization) has organized the Brockport Arts Festival - bringing tens of thousands of people to the Brockport community, many for the first, but certainly not the last time. That was one of BISCO's original goals - putting Brockport on the map and drawing attention to the Victorian jewel on the western end of Monroe County. more

For the past six years the arts festival was a three-day event, starting on Friday and continuing through Sunday. This year organizers have gone to a two-day event, just on Saturday and Sunday. more

Brockport Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs originally formed BISCO to jointly take on community services projects that no one club could handle alone. The consortium has succeeded, investing more than $100,000 into playground equipment, programs for youth and other various community projects. more

Brockport HS Class of 1951 plans reunion
The Brockport High School Class of 1951 holds their 50th Reunion on August 11. The interest is not just from the 1951 class but from the many friends in the classes of 1950 and 1952. At every meeting since last fall, committee members have reported seeing or hearing from classmates from all three classes expressing plans to attend this special occasion. more

Gates Chili Rotary names officers
Gates Chili Rotary has named new officers for the 2001-2002 year. Peg Steffan, assistant administrator of Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community, and resident of Churchville, was named president. Steffan is the third female president of the club since it was founded in 1971. Paul Weichec, manager of the Pavilion State Bank in North Chili, was named president elect. Other officers include Ted Richardson, vice president; Ralph Squires, secretary; and Dallas Embling, treasurer. more

Brockport team places 17th at international bowling finals
The Brockport father and son team of Ray and Chris Bardol finished 17th in the finals of the 26th annual Qubica USA International Family Tournament in Grapevine, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, July 26-29. more

Gillam Grant Karate promotes students
Gillam Grant (Collamer-Jones) Karate recently completed Isshin Ryu Black Belt promotions under Head Instructor Shihan Cyndy Jones, a seventh degree black belt. Sensei Clayton Dence and Jim Smith were promoted to San-Dan, third degree black belt. San-Dan requires years of dedicated teaching, training and study beyond the first two black belt levels. more

The fall 2001 season V/JV parent and student-athlete preseason meeting for Spencerport student athletes will be held on Saturday, August 25, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the high school east cafeteria and gymnasium. The Modified A & B fall parent and student-athlete meeting will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2001 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Cosgrove Middle School. more

Spencerport Canal Days 10K race results
Sean Calabrese, a 2001 graduate of Spencerport High School, finishing with a time of 34:41, was the overall winner in the Canal Days 10K race held Saturday, July 28 at 8 a.m. Maggie Whelehan, with a time of 39:42, was the overall women's winner. Proceeds from the race, sponsored by Whittier Fruit Farm, were donated to the Ogden Police Department's DARE program. more

Spencerport names varsity coach
Jamie Schneider has been named as Spencerport's new boys' varsity track and field coach. Schneider will also teach physical education at the high school and coach JV boys soccer. He is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he played NCAA Division I soccer and has a U.S. Soccer Federation National "C" coaching license. Schneider previously taught at Dr. Freddie Thomas Middle School where he coached track and field. more

Spencerport schedules sports physicals
Spencerport Central Schools Department of Physical Education and Athletics will hold Sports Physicals for the 2001-02 school year on the following dates. Students are to report to the high school west cafeteria. No one will be allowed to engage in any aspect of interscholastic sport program without having had a sports physical. more
