Brockport to crack down on playground vandals
The obscenities that keep appearing on new playground equipment at the village’s parks have Brockport residents and officials angry. The latest "attack" occurred at the Barry Street playground sometime last week. A toddler slide was covered from top to bottom in vulgarities, as were the insides of the tunnel slides. more

Canalside project draws neighborhood concern
Ballard Avenue, a quiet, dead end street along the canal in the Village of Spencerport where homes are tucked away from much of the "busyness" of village comings and goings. Between Ballard Avenue and St. John’s School on Martha Street is an area of approximately an acre-and-a-half. Formerly owned by Ogden Telephone Company, it was used as a right-of-way. In recent years, Ogden Telephone Company was sold to Citizens Communications, which is based in Texas and owns property all over the United States. more

Faggiano to keynote Sweden Democrats
Vince Faggiano, candidate for Monroe County Sheriff, will be the keynote speaker at the Sweden Democratic Committee's Recognition Dinner and Auction scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at the Brockport Country Club. more

Gary Zimmer - a chief with many hats
For many Brockport residents, Gary Zimmer will always be the chief. Recently retired as Brockport's chief of police after 33 years on the force, past chief of the Brockport Fire Department, and, until July, chief of the Brockport School Board, Zimmer has worn many hats. A big man physically, there hasn’t been a role in the community too big for Zimmer to tackle. more

Masonic DeWitt Clinton Award to be presented
On Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Spencerport, Etolian Masonic Lodge will present a Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York "DeWitt Clinton Award for Community Service" to Gary and Trish Zimmerman. more

Pearce celebrates grand opening
Pearce Memorial Church has expanded by approximately 38,000 square feet and is opening new doors to the community. Facilities are now fully handicapped accessible and the sanctuary is air-conditioned. Six new classrooms will accommodate Sunday morning and Wednesday evening classes and seminars. more

Two seek Republican endorsement in Clarendon
Registered Republican voters in the town of Clarendon will be asked to cast their ballot in the Tuesday, September 11 Primary for one of two Republican candidates vying for the town supervisor seat. more

Video inspection of contaminated sewers to be conducted
General Electric and Black and Decker are continuing to investigate conditions on-site at the 200 State Street, Brockport facility. Recent efforts have included extensive soil sampling, mainly on the east side of the main manufacturing building. The companies are currently installing two new manholes on the north side of the building to provide access to portions of the storm sewer system that extend under the building. The storm sewer system will then be video inspected to gather information to design an adequate clean up plan for the on-site areas. more

Brockport residents interested in learning more about the criminal justice system are invited to attend a Citizens Police Academy on Thursday evenings, October 4 through November 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. A joint program of the Brockport Village Police Department and the Brockport State University Police, the academy will be held on the SUNY Brockport campus. more

Chili Historical Society hosts Harvest Sale
Chili Historical Society Annual Harvest Sale will be held on Saturday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the meadow at Streeters Inn, 4541 South Union Street, Chili. The sale features home made baked goods, pickles and preserves, produce, garage sale items, as well as craft items, collectibles and antiques. more

Eastern Orleans' United Way/Red Cross Campaign ready to kick off
The 2002 Eastern Orleans United Way/Red Cross Campaign is preparing to kick off during the upcoming fall season. Volunteers for United Way of Eastern Orleans have appointed Lee Minier, vice president, Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, 2002 campaign chair. more

Featured quilter at North Chili show
Evelyn Pengelly, Churchville, will be Featured Quilter of the North Chili Quilt Show September 14 and 15. She will teach three classes and a baker's dozen of her exquisite quilts of several types will be on display. more

Lakeside physician recognized specialist in Clinical Hypertension
Dr. Hari P. Garg of Brockport has been designated as a specialist in Clinical Hypertension. Dr. Garg was one of only 194 physicians designated in the United States and Canada during the ASH Designation program's second phase. more

National Hunting and Fishing Day celebrated
September 22 and 23 mark the National Hunting and Fishing Day weekend festival, at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Avon Office located on Route 5/20, half way between East Avon and Lima. Recent years have seen 10,000 to 20,000 people attending. Each day the event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. more

Teams forming for America's Walk for Diabetes
This fall, more than 1,500 area residents will team up with their friends, neighbors, and co-workers and gather sponsors and donations to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association. They will walk together as part of "America's Walk for Diabetes" on Saturday, October 20. more

Volunteers needed for child advocate group
CASA is looking for bright, caring individuals who would like to make a difference in a child's life. CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, trains volunteers to work with children who have been neglected or abused and are in foster care or at risk of being placed in foster care. more

Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association President Kathleen Donahue announced the selection of the 2001-2002 Hilton Teacher of the Year at the annual staff and faculty convocation at Hilton High School on September 4. more

The Hilton Central School District Office of Communications is interested in publicizing class reunion information on its web site, www.hilton.k12.ny.us. Anyone organizing a class reunion, can get help finding classmates at the site. more

Registration deadline for ACT is September 21
College-bound high school students who need to take an entrance exam have two chances to register for the ACT before the October 27, 2001 test date. The postmark registration deadline is Friday, September 21. The late registration deadline is October 5 (an additional fee is required for late registration). more

Spencerport schools look for volunteers
Orientation/informational meetings for persons interested in being a Spencerport Schools volunteer will be held at 10 a.m. on: Tuesday, September 18; Thursday, September 20; Wednesday, September 26; and at 1 p.m. on: Wednesday, September 19; Tuesday, September 25; and Thursday, September 27. more

Hilton athletic department reschedules fall sports parent meeting
Hilton School District Office of Athletics has rescheduled its Fall Sports Parent Meeting to Thursday, September 13, at 7 p.m. in the Hilton High School auditorium, 400 East Avenue. All parents of students participating in fall sports will have the opportunity to meet the coaches and hear a presentation on certified athletic trainers' responsibilities; nutrition; and other aspects of the sports program in Hilton. more

Spencerport girls soccer teams to host golf tournament
The Spencerport Rangers Varsity/JV Girls Soccer teams will hold their Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, October 8 at the Caledonia Country Club. The tournament is open to the public and will benefit the many programs at the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Practice at the University of Rochester Cancer Clinic. Serving patients with breast cancer, the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Practice offers medical care in a compassionate environment. more
