Brockport tentative budget released
Taxpayers in the Village of Brockport could be faced with an almost 12 percent tax rate increase, according to tentative budget figures. Village Manager Ian Coyle released information showing the general fund budget calls for a property tax increase of 11.38 percent, which in turn will raise the tax rate to $9.98 per $1,000 of assessed value. The figure is an increase of $1.02 per $1,000. The current tax rate is $8.96 per $1,000. more

Brockport Post Office earns USPS
5 Star customer service award

The Brockport Post Office has been recognized as a five-star Post Office. The Gallup Organization surveys USPS customers, asking them to rate local Post Offices on efficiency, accuracy of delivery, consistency of delivery and wait-time in line. more

Brockport village officials approve hiring of part time clerk
After much discussion at the March 20 Brockport Village Board meeting, members decided by a three to two vote to allow the Brockport Police Department to hire a part time clerk. more

Brockport Main Street road project already draws merchant concerns
Proposed reconstruction of Brockport's Main Street is in the early design phase and is not slated to begin for a year and a half to two years, according to Lori Maher, public information officer of the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT). more

Company wants to measure Hamlin's wind speed and direction
While other towns are studying placing moratoriums on wind tower construction, the Town of Hamlin is hosting a public hearing on a notion to construction meteorological towers (METs) in the town. The towers would measure whether wind energy would be viable in the town. more

Longer operating hours for NY canal
system in 2006, boater tolls eliminated

Boaters and visitors to the historic New York State Canal System will be able to enjoy two additional hours of canal cruising when the 2006 season begins on May 1, according to Carmella R. Mantello, director of the New York State Canal Corporation. more

Two Spencerport soldiers return
to the U.S. from overseas posts

Spc. Sarah Hicks served a year with Bravo Co., 3rd MI BN, as a Korean linguist, stationed at Camp Humphreys, Korea. Temporarily assigned to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona for interrogation training, Sarah will transfer to Ft. Hood, Killeen, Texas in June. Her company will deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan in the fall. more

People met Friday, March 17 to protest the plans to tear down the Stagecoach Inn and replace it with a Walgreen's Drug Store at the intersection of Route 259 and 33 in North Chili. more

Water meeting planned in Kendall
Officials from the towns of Hamlin and Kendall will host a public meeting Thursday, March 30 at 7 p.m. at the Kendall High School. more

Work continues on Adams Basin bridge
Recent work on the Adams Basin bridge over the Erie Canal has included shoring up the bridge to permit work on the concrete abutments, according to foreman Anton Gricar of Hohl Industrial. more

Student leaders of the Byron-Bergen Emergency Response Team (BBERT) presented a workshop, "Are You Ready?" for middle schoolers from around Genesee County at this year's annual Youth Conference at Genesee Community College on March 16. more

Ground broken for $18-million
SUNY Brockport residential complex

Ground was broken March 22 for an $18-million residential complex on the SUNY Brockport campus. The 52 townhomes will house 208 and construction is expected to be completed and ready for the first student residents in the fall of 2007. more

Hilton students inducted in Junior High National Honor Society Chapter
Principal Carol Stehm of Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School announced the induction of 23 students into the Junior High School National Honor Society at the Middle School. more

Holley Board of Education adopts budget for 2006-07 school year
At its March 20 meeting, the Holley Board of Education adopted a $17,646,635 spending plan for the 2006-07 school year. The plan is $572,870 or 3.36 percent over the current budget of $17,073,765. more

Northwood K-6 Math-A-Thon raises
funds for St. Jude Children's Center

Students at Hilton's Northwood Elementary School learned while they earned according to teacher Jerry Adduci. more

Students perform at Eastman Theatre
Brockport High School students participated in the Monroe County Senior High Music Festival on March 10 and 11. Students performed the concert at the Eastman Theatre School of Music. more

Students win t-shirt design contest
Two students won Brockport's Ginther Elementary School Parent Teacher Student Association t-shirt design contest. The winning artwork by kindergartener Frankie Lauricella and first grader Paige McGrath can be found on t-shirts currently on sale at the Ginther School. more

H-P Seniors offered day trip
The Hilton-Parma Seniors will be traveling to Geneva, New York on Wednesday, April 19. Participants will briefly visit the Finger Lakes Casino in Farmington for gaming, with a discount coupon for lunch and will then proceed to the matinee performance of "The Ink Spots" at the historic Smith Opera House in Geneva. There will be a buffet dinner at Bristol Harbour as well. more

Brockport student wins scholarship
Cody Dean, a Brockport High School senior, is this year's winner of a $250 scholarship presented by the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. more

Churchville 17-year-old off to wheelchair competitions
Seventeen-year-old Ryan Chalmers, of Churchville, continues his quest for the 2008 Paralympics (Olympics for individuals with disabilities) as he heads to the National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Houston, Texas in late March and the International Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Brisbane, Australia in April. more

Hilton team wins U of R Spring Fling Tournament
Hilton's 5/6 grade boys team won the U of R Spring Fling basketball tournament by winning all four of their games. The team's head coach is Todd Prince with Harald Juergens and Mike Miller as his assistants. more

USA competition
Gymnasts Brittany Burr and Kerry Apeland competed March 11 and 12 in the Level 9/10 State Championships at Shaker High School in Latham, earning high all-around scores qualifying them to advance in USA Gymnastics competition. Seventeen-year-old Apeland of Chili competed as a Level 9 and totaled 34.825 all around. more
