Franklyn Dailey remembers the beech tree in the front yard of his home on 52 South Avenue as being much smaller when he climbed it as a child. His grandfather built the family home in the 1890s, but following a foreclosure the family had to move and the new owners let the family homestead fall into disrepair. more

FUSE aids in safety education
Over 150 children received photo identification cards and had their finger prints registered by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, toured fire safety trailers, received smoke and carbon dioxide detectors, practiced calling 911, rode the "Convincer," a crash simulator, and chatted with "Sparky" the talking fire safety dog at Safety Day in Hamlin. The events were all part of the Sunday offerings at the Hamlin Firemen's Carnival. more

Gough Road residents question termination of road maintenance
The practice of road maintenance on Gough Road -- that according to residents has gone on since 1946 -- was halted by Town of Riga officials in 2005 and that has residents on that stretch of road up in arms. Gough is a dead end road that is three-quarters of a mile long, has three homes and seven property owners. more

Hilton church sponsors ninth team to Honduras
Parma Christian Fellowship, based in Hilton, sent its ninth team to Morazan, Yoro, Honduras for an 11-day trip of ministry, support and cultural exchange through a school sponsored by the church, LaEscuela de La Verdad y La Vida (The School of Truth and Life). more

Soap Box Derby coming to Brockport
On your mark! Get set! Go! Those words will be heard in the Village of Brockport in the Smith Street bridge area on September 23 and 24 when the Kiwanis Club brings its soapbox derby to the area. more

Spencerport Firemen fight blaze at their house
As dawn broke last Friday morning, firemen and community residents were getting the full impact of the scene -- the fire company’s headquarters on Lyell Avenue in Spencerport village was being called a total loss and plans had to be implemented to house the trucks and whatever equipment that had been saved. more

Village's clock tower re-dedicated
It was 1914 when the Tower Clock on Main Street in Brockport was first unveiled. A re-dedication of the prominent village time keeper was hosted on August 1 after repairs were made to the original fixture. more

Register in-person at the clerk's office, Town of Parma, 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road, Hilton from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. more

IACC searches for oldest living immigrant
The Italian American Community Center is looking for the oldest living Italian immigrant in the Rochester area. This person will be recognized at the 15th Annual Christmas Gala- "Tu Scendi dalle Stelle." The gala will be held on November 25, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. more

Round Goby round-up in the Erie Canal
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office (LGLFRO) in cooperation with the Friends of LGLFRO (Friends of Fish), Great Lakes Center at Buffalo State College and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper will be holding its annual Round Goby Round-Up to track the invasive round goby in the Erie Canal. Participants can fish from shore or from their own boat. A fishing pole and fishing license, for those 16 years and older, are all that is needed. more

At its organizational meeting on Tuesday, July 11, members of the Spencerport Board of Education elected Laura McFarlane as president for the 2006-07 school year. more

Spencerport district appoints administrators
Lisa McCarthy will join the Spencerport Central School District as coordinator of staff development. McCarthy was previously the instructional specialist and literacy coach in the East Irondequoit School District. more

Students learn culinary secrets at camp
Students from the nine component districts as well as private schools participated in the BOCES 2 Culinary Camp to learn more about Culinary Arts from visiting chefs from RIT, Wegmans and local restaurants. more

Liz Zorn is the 2006 Churchville Youth Soccer (CYA) scholarship winner, receiving $250 for her winning essay about what youth soccer has meant to her. more

Ranger runner wins Silver Medal at ESG
Ryan Bloom (#9, at right) a senior and member of the Ranger Cross Country Indoor Track and Outdoor Track teams, won a Silver Medal in the Men's Scholastic Division 3,000 meter Steeplechase at the Empire State Games in Rochester on July 28. more

Slick wins cross country Memorial 5K
On Saturday, July 29, the Churchville-Chili cross country team hosted a 5K race at Black Creek Park honoring two former runners. Eighty-two runners competed on a challenging course in extremely hot conditions. This year's run was the first time this race has been run on a cross country course. more

Soccer stadium light removal
Crews using a crane and a bucket truck removed two 80-foot tall light poles at the Spencerport Schools' soccer stadium. Regular inspections of the wooden poles revealed safety concerns. more
