Changes to dangerous stretch on Route 18 coming
A stretch of Route 18 which has claimed several lives in recent years will get some changes to speed limits and signs before the end of the year. The section of Route 18 is west of Redman Road in the Town of Hamlin. more

Churchville board hears about LDCs
Churchville Village Board members began their October 22 meeting with a presentation on Local Development Corporations or LDCs. Jennifer Chadwick, Esq. of Lacy Katzen LLP spoke to trustees about forming an LDC as a tool for economic development and grants. more

Churchville Main Street Railroad crossing to be closed
Churchville Village Clerk/Treasurer Sue Davis announced during the October 22 meeting of the Churchville Village Board that she had received information from Rick DelPrince of CSXT about an upcoming closing of the railroad crossing on Main Street (Route 36). more

Holley considers disbanding police department
It's been an issue that's been on and off the table for many years and now residents can voice their opinions on whether the Village of Holley's police department stays or goes. more

Lakeside Care Center receives local support
Lakeside Beikirch Care Center joins nursing facilities across the state in opposing changes in legislation which would result in drastic budget cuts of long term care programs and additional staffing challenges. more

New Monroe County flood maps to be unveiled
Monroe County residents are invited to review the county's new flood maps at an open house that will be held by federal and state flood plain management personnel on Monday, October 29. Experts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) will be on hand to answer residents questions about the maps, their risk for flooding, flood insurance and development standards in flood zones. more

Resident becomes international exchange coordinator
Sharon Van Ornum has been appointed as the new local representative for EF Foundation for Foreign Study. As the International Exchange Coordinator for the Rochester area, she will facilitate opportunities for local families and schools to host talented, motivated high school students from nearly 40 countries wishing to experience life in America for a semester or a year. more

Trail development assistance available
Parks & Trails New York, a statewide parks and trails advocacy organization, is offering trail development assistance to communities in 2008 through its Healthy Trails, Healthy People program. more

Calendar of historic barns on sale
The 2008 Hilton-Parma Historic Barn Calendar is available at the Hilton Big M, Ben Franklin, and the office of the village historian in the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street, Hilton. The Historian's office is open Tuesday and Thursday 1 to 4:15 p.m. The price is $15. more

Coats for Kids collection planned
The 14th annual Coats for Kids will be held at Wal-Mart in Brockport (6265 Brockport Spencerport Road) on Sunday, November 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations benefit the Brockport Ecumenical Clothing Shelf. more

Highway clean-up
The Holley Rotary Club cleaned a section of Route 31 west of the village. It "adopted" this section of the highway four years ago and picks up the litter along it four times a year. more

H-P Rec's Halloween Celebration
Hilton-Parma Recreation hosted its annual Halloween Celebration, with over 350 costumed youth and their parents, on Saturday, October 20. more

Sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
by JK Rowling support local libraries

Thanks to the patrons of Lift Bridge Bookshop who pre-ordered the Harry Potter book, 22 local libraries received credit donations to buy books at Lift Bridge and add to their collections. Five dollars from each pre-order was set aside for indicated libraries. more

Water tower maintenance
Dan Murcin, welder, checks the outriggers temporarily welded to the top of the 100 foot tall water tower located off Ogden Center Road. He was raised to the top via the cherry picker bucket. The top outrigger bars are matched by similar bars welded to the bottom of the tank. more

Two vie for town clerk seat in Kendall
Town of Kendall Clerk Amy Richardson, who has held the seat since her appointment in March, is challenged by Gay Smith for the town clerk seat in the November election. more

Award winning educator
Stephen Locke was awarded the American Chemical Society of Rochester Sections "2007 Volunteer of the Year Award." D. Richard Cobb, chair of the Rochester Section, Inc. of the American Chemical Society, said "I am pleased to announce that Steve Locke has been selected as this year's winner. more

B-B students take part in Empire State Games
Byron-Bergen elementary and middle school students competed in the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged at SUNY Brockport on October 12. The games offer opportunities in a variety of sports for youngsters with physical challenges as they strive to be the best they can be. more

BHS students recognized for achievement
Forty-one students at Brockport High School were recognized for exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. This program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. more

Butterflies fly free
Miss Jammal's third grade class at Byron-Bergen Elementary School learned about life cycles of butterflies. Her students created homes for the Painted Lady butterflies, watched them change from larva to mature butterflies, and then released them into the wild. more

Dictionaries distributed
The Spencerport Rotary Club distributed a dictionary to each third-grade student at the Spencerport Schools, St. Johns and Northstar Christian Academy. more

Recreation opportunities now available for home school children
Sweden/Clarkson Recreation offers a new program designed for home school children in grades kindergarten through high school. more

Families and friends gathered as St. John the Evangelist School celebrated its 80th anniversary on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21. more

Eighth grade social studies classes at Byron-Bergen Middle School visited the Heritage Square Museum in Ontario, New York to participate in a Civil War Day learning experience. more

Two area athletes to be Hall of Famers
The JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament, will include recognition of the 11th Class of inductees into the JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame. The oldest running NCAA Division III Tournament January 8 through 12 is the 42nd annual event. more

Cadets take gymnastics crown
Hilton finished off an undefeated 13-0 season with a 133.600 to 126.200 victory over previously unbeaten Fairport to win the Division II gymnastics championship. Webster and Batavia took third and fourth respectively in the quad meet held at SUNY Brockport. more
