The Village of Brockport has established a police chief selection committee; it is now in the process of seeking committee members. As proposed by Mayor Mary Ann Thorpe, the committee will be comprised of two village trustees, two Brockport police officers, two residents at large, one educator, one member of the clergy, and one merchant. more

Churchville officials study added security measures
Recent vandalism has officials in the Village of Churchville revisiting the idea of hiring a private security firm and installing video cameras, in addition to the promise of increased presence of Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and New York State Troopers. more

Hilton native graduates from Air Force Academy
The Superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado has announced that Cadet First Class Thomas B. Younker of Hilton, has successfully completed all of the requirements necessary for graduation. Cadet Younker will receive his diploma with a B.S. degree in political science at Falcon Stadium on Wednesday, May 30, at the 43rd Commencement Exercises of the Air Force Academy, where the guest speaker will be the Vice President of the United States, Richard Cheney. more

Clarendon's second annual Soapbox Car Race will be held on Saturday, June 2. This is an event that promotes "positive Youth Development," as well as family and community involvement. The family builds the car together and then will spend the race day together, either working as the "pit crew" for the racer or as spectators cheering from the sidelines. more

Spencerport schedules driver education enrollment
High school students wishing to enroll in the summer driver education program should attend a meeting held on June 11 in the Board of Education Meeting Room which is located in the Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. more

Town of Sweden soldier gets military stone 150 years after his death
While doing family genealogy research, Harold Markham of Spencerport learned that his great-great grandfather, Avery Markham, had served in the New York militia during the War of 1812. As a member of a unit from Western New York, Avery, who was living in Chili, served on the Niagara Frontier. In 1814, he was part of the Battle of Fort Erie in Ontario, Canada. more

Two Lift Bridges shops to become one
After more than 25 years of marriage, Archie and Pat Kutz say they’re finally ready to move in together. At work, that is. Owners of the Lift Bridge Book Shop and Lift Bridge Kids on Main Street, Brockport, the Kutz’s will merge the two stores over the next few weeks. Separated by just a few doors on Main Street, the two stores will move in together in the recently vacated Mark and Dale’s store. more

Entering its fourth year, the Hamlin Wheel Fest is rolling along quite well, gaining a little more momentum each year. Coming off a year that brought in almost 10,000 festival goers, the event is being billed as even bigger and better. more

For the third year in a row, the festival will hold its Cruise In, a free car show open to anyone with a classic car, truck or motorcycle. These classic beauties will be on display in the Town Hall parking lot, arranged by years. more

A free Safety Clinic on Saturday, June 2, at Rochester General Hospital, 9 a.m. to noon could help ensure child car seats are properly installed and teach more about bike safety. more

Dog Obedience classes starting
Entry applications for dog obedience classes at the Monroe County Fairgrounds are now available at the Fair Office, located in the Dome Center at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. The dog obedience classes will run for eight weeks every Monday night starting June 11, and are sponsored by the Monroe County Fair. more

Family Fun in the Sun planned in Bergen
Family Fun in the Sun will be held Saturday, June 9, at Hickory Park in the Village of Bergen. The event starts with lawn sales at 9 a.m. and kids races at 10 and 10:30 a.m. Crafters and vendors will be open for business at 11 a.m. At noon, a parade will start in the Village of Bergen and proceed south down Route 19 to the park. more

New cultural arts program offered
A new opportunity for children to learn about various world cultures will be offered this summer through the Brockport-Clarkson-Sweden Joint Recreation Commission. Children ages five through eleven are invited to attend one of two July sessions of a day program that utilizes the performing arts to explore cultural differences among participants. more

Ogden Community Center begins summer hours
Effective Tuesday, May 29, through Friday, August 29, the Ogden Town Offices will be open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents who have a need to do business after 4 p.m. can contact the appropriate department to make arrangements. more

Rabies clinic scheduled for pets
The Monroe County Health Department will conduct a free rabies clinic for dogs and cats belong-ing to Monroe County residents on Wednesday, May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dome Arena, 2695 East Henrietta Road. more

Sweden adjourns cell tower hearing
A public hearing on a proposed communications tower to be located at 441 Sweden Ogden Townline Road has been adjourned until June 26 at 7 p.m. The adjournment will allow the applicants, SBA and Cingular Wireless to provide more information to the Town of Sweden’s technical consultants. more

Holley jumpers raise over $11,000 for American Heart Association
The Annual Jump Rope for Heart has become a tradition at Holley Elementary School. In its 16th year, the event has raised over $140,000 for the American Heart Association's research and programs. This year, 175 jumpers raised $11,437 by gathering pledges, then jumping rope in teams of six. Sixty-six parent and 28 staff volunteers helped out during the event and provided plenty of beverages and snacks to the active jumpers. more

Catholic Daughters Court Nativity #931 met on Thursday, May 10, at the Parish Center. The winners of the Annual Essay Contest were awarded prizes and recognition. more

Area youth advance in diamond skills competition
Hamlin Recreation hosted a local competition for the annual Major League Baseball Diamond Skills Competition of Thursday, May 10. Eighteen area youth participated this year. Eight participants qualified to compete at the Sectional level at the Parma Town Hall on Saturday, June 9. more

Children's fishing derby June 2
The Monroe County Conservation Council's Annual KIDS Trout Fishing Derby is Saturday, June 2 at Powder Mill Park. Derby fishing is scheduled from 8 to 10 a.m. more

Devine perfect in sectionals
Senior Sheila Devine began first round action in the Section Five softball playoffs by tossing a perfect game in Brockport's 5-0 win over Greece Olympia May 22. "I was just thinking - let me get these last three outs," said Devine about the last inning. She completed her first-ever perfect game with three straight come-backers to the mound in the seventh inning. more

Indians ruin Ranger hopes
The Irondequoit Indians needed a win over Spencerport to clinch the Division II softball crown. A Ranger win would mean a share of the title, but the Indians came away with a 6-5, May 17. more

Local men compete at national level
Adam Steinwachs of Churchville, and Ben Maeso of Rochester, competed in the 27th U.S. National Taekwondo Championships May 25-27 in Cleveland, Ohio. more
