Area household hazardous waste collection June 12
Monroe County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) and the towns of Hamlin, Clarkson, Ogden, Parma and Sweden and the villages of Hilton, Brockport and Spencerport have joined forces to hold an appointment-only Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection at the Hilton Highway Garage, 50 Henry Street, on Saturday, June 12 from 8 a.m. to noon. more

Brockport school taxpayers approve $57.3 million spending plan
The determination of Brockport school officials to keep the tax rate increase under five percent met with the approval of taxpayers who voted for the budget by an almost three to one margin in the May 18 vote. more

Brockport sets summer meeting schedule
Village of Brockport officials remind residents that the board meets only once per month in June, July and August. The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on June 21, July 19 and August 16. A public hearing is scheduled for the June 21 meeting at which time the village will consider an amendment to its village code regarding open burning. more

Brockport village road work scheduled
Drivers may not have to dodge potholes and rough spots on the Village of Brockport's Main Street stretch for much longer. more

Free training to improve public safety
The County of Monroe, the Greater Rochester Red Cross and the Community of Monroe Citizen Corps - Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will conduct trainings every Tuesday, beginning May 25 through July 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Public Safety Training Facility, 1100 Scottsville Road, Rochester. This training is free and open to the public. more

Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council receives grant
Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt (R,C-Albion) has announced that he and Senator George Maziarz (R,C-62nd Senatorial District) have secured a $10,000 state grant to fund the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council's (GO ART!) renovation of the former Batavia Club building. more

Hilton voters pass budget, 1,391 to 1,080
In step with all of the other school districts in Monroe County, Hilton voters turned out to pass the $54.4 million budget, 1,391-1,080. The budget is projected to raise school taxes nearly six percent for a budget that is more than $6 million higher than last year. more

Holley, Kendall budgets pass
Despite offering a budget that brings with it a 21 percent tax increase, voters in the Holley Central School District approved the proposed $16.8 million budget by a margin of almost two to one. more

Lakeside Health System recognizes volunteers
Volunteers of Lakeside Health System were honored at a dinner held on Tuesday, May 11 at the Plantation Party House in Spencerport. This group of volunteers donated 22,400 hours of their time in 2003-2004, providing essential services including transporting patients, staffing the main information desk, sorting and delivering mail, general office duties and other tasks. more

Penfield Central School District will host the 26th Annual Rochester Area School Bus Safety Road-eo on Saturday, June 5 beginning at 7:30 a.m. Road-eo Co-Chairs, Loretta Hutchinson and Raymond Hart, expect approximately 100 school bus professionals from school bus operators from the Greater Rochester Area. more

Some dispute Ogden's reassessments
Town of Ogden Assessor Bob Criddle reported that 15 percent of Ogden property owners disputed their re-assessments as of Friday, May 14. "Last year, 800 reassessments were done and 38 people disputed them. more

St. Paul breaks ground, looks forward
Under a cloudy sky, about 250 members of St. Paul Lutheran Church stood to hear the words of Rev. Albert Zoller and to see a shovel full of dirt being turned over. Even though the sun wasn't given room to peek through, there weren't enough clouds in the sky to dampen the spirits of those in attendance. more

Town Board approves Fairfield zoning, attorney general sues developer
The hotly contested Fairfield Place has received rezoning approval, but will still have to go before the Parma Town Board one more time before continuing on to the town's planning board. more

Troop 90 scout earns Eagle rank
Boy Scout Troop 90 held a Court of Honor on March 30, to recognize Edward P. Rowe for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Friends and family were in attendance at the First Baptist Church in Chili to see Rowe receive the highest award in Boy Scouting. more

Volunteers needed to raise guide dog puppies
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is recruiting volunteers to open their hearts and homes to raise puppies that will become guide dogs for the visually impaired. Volunteers are needed to teach their foster puppies obedience and manners while socializing the pups in preparation for their future as guide dogs. more

Cadette Girl Scout Troop 631 held their Court of Awards at the Johnson House on May 5. All 10 girls in the troop achieved their Silver Award this year and were recognized at this ceremony. more

Carrie Maziarz has announced her candidacy for Village of Brockport Trustee. "I am running for the village board because I am passionate about this community and the great traditions it embodies: the downtown shopping, the churches, the close-knit, family-oriented neighborhoods, the schools and college, the historical canal and its Victorian-era charm," stated Maziarz in a press release. more

Churchville Mayor appointed to mayors' nominating committee
Churchville Mayor Donald Ehrmentraut has been appointed to the eight member Nominating Committee of the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM). Mayor Eugene Murray, of the Village of Rockville Centre, President of the Conference of Mayors, made the selection. more

The North Greece Fire Department has made a special effort to help students at Hilton's Northwood Elementary School learn about fire safety and share what they've learned with others. more

Students receive a special package from the Middle East
Students in Amy Stoker's and Chris Albrecht's fourth-grade classes at Brockport's Hill Elementary School, recently received a special care package from Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 62 (VR-62). Students in Mrs. Stoker's class have a special connection to the fleet because Classroom Aide Doris Boyst's son, Kyle Boyst, is a Petty Officer 3rd Class for the fleet. more

Alessi nets four in Ranger win
Jennifer Alessi scored four goals and Cassie Moyer added three goals and an assist as Spencerport defeated Brockport 18-5 in the final regular season girls lacrosse game of the season. more

Seniors Kellie Wright and Michele Collichio did just that as they combined for the first run of the game in the fifth inning as 8th-seeded Brockport defeated 9th-seeded Webster-Schroeder 2-0 in the first round of the Class AA high school softball sectional playoffs. more
