Area municipalities receive grant funding
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to make multiple improvements benefiting residents living in the 1st Legislative District, which includes the Town of Sweden, as well as the Villages of Hilton and Brockport totaling $105,000 has been secured. The grants are recommended by County Executive Maggie Brooks and legislation has been submitted to the Monroe County Legislature, pending approval at the June 12 Legislature meeting. more

Church celebrates its heritage
The Parma Greece United Church of Christ, located at 1211 Manitou Road in Hilton, is celebrating its history with a special worship service on Sunday, May 27. The church was founded in 1834 by 14 local "brethren and sisters friendly to liberal Christianity." From the first meeting church members kept a journal, recording some of the events and activities of the day. more

Drama award named after SUNY Brockport theatre professor
The organizers of the Eighth Annual English Drama Festival, held each year at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, have created the "Dick St. George Award" in recognition of SUNY Brockport Professor Richard St. George's contributions to both the drama festival and the teaching of theatre at the University of Debrecen. more

Lakeside honors employees for a century of service
Three Lakeside Health System employees reached the 35 years of service milestone. Laurie Hatch, Lori Ann Shull and Candi Mael each have devoted 35 years to Lakeside. more

Local company seeing significant growth in global lab services
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and Arthur Glenz, president and CEO of ACM Medical Laboratory, Inc., hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for ACM's newly expanded facility located at 160 Elmgrove Park in the Town of Gates. more

New logo chosen for Hilton Apple Fest
The Hilton Apple Fest Board of Directors has selected the 2007 logo from the over 100 designs that were submitted. The winner of the design is Bobbie Prince, an artiest from Spencerport. This logo will be used on souvenirs including sweatshirts and tee shirts. One of the designs by Ryan Luce of Hamlin was selected to be placed on children's tee shirts this year. more

Orleans County Sheriff's office offers prom night safety tips
The prom or senior ball should be a positive experience for your child, one that he or she will never forget. Before the big night there is much to talk about such as gowns, tuxedos, who will share a limo and of course, who will be your son or daughter's date. But the most important part of that discussion should come from you, the parents, in explaining to your child that prom night safety is crucial in the planning process and that alcohol, drugs and cigarettes are not necessary for a fun and memorable evening, the sheriff wrote in a press release. more

Riga discusses need, costs for water
Town of Riga residents learned what expanding public water might cost them, and how long it might take to get it during a public information meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at the Churchville-Chili Intermediate School Auditorium. Town Engineer Paul Chatfield and Special Counsel Marcia Havens gave a presention on the findings of a Water Feasibility Study to a crowd of about 100 people. more

School district lunch programs flex with new guidelines
Many of the school districts in the area have been proactive in offering students healthy, nutritional lunches so the Healthy Schools Act proposed by Governor Eliot Spitzer will fit in easily with what they have been doing all along. more

The dedication ceremony of the reconstructed Spencerport Trolley Depot on Saturday, May 12 was cause for celebration. more

Student-built home goes to the auction block
BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education students have built a house each year for nearly two decades. "We've been doing it ever since I've been here and that's 17 years," said Don Knab, supervisor of the project and carpentry/building services instructor. more

For the past 12 years, the Village of Churchville has been filled with the sounds of music and the aroma of roasting chicken on one Sunday afternoon in June. This year the boom of cannon fire will also resonate on that day. more

Cleaning the canal paths
On Saturday, April 21, nine Boy Scouts and their leader, David Maslyn, and his assistant together with seven Masons of Social Lodge #713, all from Kendall, met at the lift bridge in Holley to take part in the 2nd annual Canal Clean Sweep. more

The Town of Sweden Adopt-a-Trail program began its sixth season with an open "clean sweep" on Saturday, May 5. more

School salutes military
The Service Learning Club at Canal View Elementary School in Spencerport salutes the courage, bravery and dedication of all servicemen and women. In recognition of the sacrifices hometown heroes and their families make each and everyday, a "Hall of Honor" will be created in the school. more

STOP DWI panel meets at Byron-Bergen
To encourage students to make positive decisions regarding alcohol and other drug use during prom week, an assembly was held at the Byron-Bergen High School on May 10. Students listened to a STOP DWI Victim's Impact Panel comprised of people who lost loved ones due to a DWI crash. more

Assemblyman sponsors legislation to give property owners 'real' tax relief
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (134th District) is sponsoring new legislation designed to give Monroe County homeowners and businesses real and lasting relief from burdensome property taxes. Reilich noted that there are still some legislators left in New York that champion the rights of taxpayers over the needs of special interest. more

Clarkson Republicans select candidates
The Clarkson Republican Committee has endorsed its slate of candidates for the November election. They are: Paul Kimball, supervisor; Christa L. Filipowicz, town council; Jackie Smith, town council and Sharon S. Mattison, town clerk. more

Byron-Bergen third graders received dictionaries from the Brockport Elks Lodge. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks participates in a nationwide program to provide third grade students with dictionaries. more

BOCES 2 Center to host culinary and automotive summer camps
Students interested in automotive technology or culinary arts are invited to sign up for week-long summer camps hosted by the BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education Center at 3589 Big Ridge Road in Spencerport. more

Byron-Bergen students participate in technology media festival
Students from 14 area schools were recognized for outstanding achievement in the creative use of technology at the Technology Media Festival on April 26 at Caledonia-Mumford Middle School. There were 536 entries in eight categories of the competition. more

Education grant will help prepare
55 Orleans County students to get into college

SUNY College at Brockport will receive a $287,881 grant to help low-income Orleans County students pursue a college education. The grant, awarded through the Department of Education, will give 55 high school student from Albion, Holley, Lyndonville and Medina the opportunity to prepare for their higher education through SUNY Brockport's Upward Bound program. more

Health Fair in Holley for community
Because the school is the hub of the community, School Nurse Julie Kirby figured it would be the best place to host a Community Health Fair. "Healthy habits are important not only for the children in the schools but to their parents, grandparents and the whole community," she said. more

Holley students engineer a win at RIT competition
Thirty-eight Holley students in grades 6-8 competed with students from around the Rochester area at the E3 Fair at Rochester Institute of Technology. more

Spencerport schools promote healthy lifestyles with grant
While they are in school, students participate in team sports but the chances of them remaining on a soccer, lacrosse, basketball or football team after graduation is not likely. As a way to promote an active, healthy lifestyle following graduation and into adulthood, Ty Zinkiewich, principal at the Spencerport High School, sought and received a grant to upgrade the schools' fitness equipment to incorporate physical fitness activities that can be done solo. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics of Gates played host to the Dare to Be Great Invitational May 5 through 6. More than 200 gymnasts represented nine teams. more

Maxon earns Chancellor's, Lian coach of the year
Kendall graduate and SUNY Brockport sophomore Rachel Maxon was awarded the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athlete Award and women's lacrosse coach Traci Lian was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year. Both were among more than a dozen Golden Eagles earning awards in various sports as the spring season came to a close. more

Tim Steadman allowed just four hits while striking out nine and Devin Schaefer had three RBI's as Kendall defeated rival Holley 8-1. more

Top bodybuilding and powerlifting event scheduled for Rochester
On June 9 many of the country's finest bodybuilders will travel to Rochester to participate in the 53rd Annual NPC Rochester Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. This competition is the oldest continuously held bodybuilding competition in the United States. more
