B-B goes back to voters for school project
Officials in the Byron-Bergen Central School District have decided to put a $29.5 million repair and renovation project up for a second vote. "The board of education voted unanimously at its August 23 meeting to take the project back out to voters," Superintendent Gregory Geer said. The new vote on the capital project is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the high school fitness wrestling room. more

Bridges still a concern in downtown Brockport
An influx of college students in recent weeks contributes to the streets in the Village of Brockport being more crowded and placing even more demand on the only operating Erie Canal bridge - the one on Main Street (Route 19). more

Hamlin officials disband committee
At one point during the lengthy special meeting in the Town of Hamlin, a show of hands was requested, “Who wants wind towers, who doesn’t?” Of the close to 100 people in attendance (which included committee, support boards and town board members), only a handful raised their hands as being in favor of siting wind turbines in the town. more

Public hearings set on proposed waterway regulation
The International Joint Commission (IJC) will hold eight public hearings to receive comment on its draft Order of Approval, new regulation plan and other matters related to the regulation of water levels and flows on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The draft Order and several background documents will be released on September 17. The IJC intends to make a final decision by the end of the year. more

Run your old sneakers over to recycle collection
If your growing piles of old sneakers are taking over your home and garage, you might want to gather them up and head for Churchville. During the month of September, the Union Congregational United Church of Christ will be holding a used sneaker collection as part of a recycling project. more

Star of the West Milling expands storage capacity
An expansion project at Star of the West Milling Co., in Churchville, will help ease the need for more wheat storage at the facility. more

Statewide Trails and Greenways Conference planned in Rochester
Parks & Trails New York will hold its third trails and greenways conference, September 28 and 29, at the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center on the campus of Monroe Community College in Rochester. The conference, entitled Healthy Trails, Healthy Communities, recognizes the contribution that trails make to individual health, quality of life and the environmental and economic health of New York's communities. more

Sweden Community Foundation supports senior celebration
Sweden Community Foundation Directors Jack Milner and Thomas Ferris presented a check for $250 to Sweden Senior Association President Marlyn Lafferty on August 27 in support of the National Accreditation Celebration being held at the Senior Center September 14 and 15. more

The third Clarkson School Reunion will be held at the Clarkson Community Church and Schoolhouse on Sunday, September 9, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. more

Water and sewer infrastructure workshops scheduled
The New York State Water and Sewer Infrastructure Co-Funding Initiative will hold its third annual series of free co-funding workshops for municipalities seeking need with funding a drinking water and sewer project. The first of four Water & Sewer Infrastructure Co-Funding Workshops and Individual Project Consultations will be in Rochester on September 11 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 70 State Street. more

National Night Out planned in Brockport
Free hot dogs, crash simulations, face painting and a chance to mingle with police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel will be the draws of the night when National Night Out 2007 comes back to Brockport. more

Rural and Migrant Ministry receives donation
The Rural and Migrant Ministry (RMM) of Brockport is the recipient of a donation awarded by the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport. Part of the donation contributes to internships such as the program recently completed by Leah Russell. more

Supporting the Troops
Employees at Paychex kicked off a "Support Our Troops" drive and collected boxes of items for servicemen and women. The project was launched at Paychex with a kick off breakfast, posters were displayed listing the items most requested by the men and women who are deployed. more

Volunteers invited for shoreline cleanup
The 15th International Coastal Clean Up is on September 15 at Hamlin Beach State Park. The Hamlin Conservation Board is looking for volunteers to help clean up the shoreline along Hamlin Beach State Park from 9 a.m. to noon. more

Churchville-Chili Leo Club starts second decade of service
The Churchville-Chili Leo Club, a community service group, begins its 11th year of service activities. The Leo Club is sponsored by the Churchville Lions Club and is comprised of junior and senior high students at Churchville-Chili School District. more

Holley Board appoints elementary assistant principal
Regina Yeo of Wyoming, NY was appointed Holley elementary assistant principal at the August 20 Holley Board of Education meeting. "This job is a perfect fit for me in that my children used to attend school here and I did my student teaching in Holley. It's like coming home," she said. more

Junior High School PTO helps with school supplies
Churchville-Chili Junior High School Parent Teacher Organization member Wendy Reese and a group of parent volunteers offered to purchase school supplies for interested families at a reduced cost this year. more

No increase in tax rates in Hilton school district
Hilton Central School District Board of Education approved the school tax rates for the 2007-08 year at its August 7 meeting. The board approved rates reflect no increase to the tax rate in three of the district's towns- Parma, Greece and Clarkson. more

Robotics team at Churchville-Chili

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) founder Dean Kamen, creator of the Segway, and FIRST President Paul Gudonis challenged high school robotics teams to submit a two-minute video via You Tube to share how they inspire others in science and technology, and if accepted as a model team, join the President’s Circle. more

On Sunday, August 26, a gathering at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hilton marked the milestone birthday of Kay Fraser with song and cake. On August 27, the Ogden Seniors group celebrated her 100th birthday with her at the senior center. more
