The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has recommended 10 Greater Rochester not-for-profit agencies to receive $645,774 in federal transportation funds to help purchase 19 buses to serve the area elderly and disabled. more

Savor the spirit of the holiday season and learn about the customs of four different faith traditions as the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) presents a series of live, theatrical, faith-based holiday programs designed to immerse visitors in diverse and compelling holiday traditions practiced in the region. more

Jeff Tyzik to direct the RWCCO
Jeff Tyzik, who is the Principal Pops Conductor with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, has also chosen to direct the Roberts Wesleyan Community Orchestra this 2002-2003 season. Over the past decade, he has built a reputation as one of the country's foremost pops conductors. When he mounts the podium at the Roberts Cultural Life Center, he will bring with him some of his own arrangements as well as the artistry of several solo performers. more

Kendall native named to homecoming court
Amy Unterborn, of Kendall, was one of five women named to the 2002 University of Georgia homecoming court. Her father, Randy Unterborn, a 1978 graduate of UGA, escorted her onto the football field at half time of the UGA-Vanderbilt game on October 19. more

One canal bridge opens, another closes
Many residents will rejoice over the expected lowering of the Washington Street bridge in Adams Basin the week of November 5. As the canal boating season closes, the ailing bridge can be lowered to allow vehicular traffic once again. more

New family show at RMSC Planetarium
Winter fun returns to the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium with a new family show, "Holiday Songs and Skies with Mr. Jack Frost," opening the Friday after Thanksgiving and running through New Year's Day. more

Ryan's Big M holds 12th Annual Apple Fest
Ryan's Big M held their 12th annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 26. Customers were treated to cider and doughnuts as they shopped, along with samples of Apple Crisp and a variety of Apple Caramel dips. Happy the Clown was there to make the kids smile with his animal balloons. more

Sweden/Clarkson project honored by state
The towns of Sweden and Clarkson have been recognized as finalists in the inaugural NYS Governor's Quality Communities Awards for Excellence. The Quality Communities Initiative demonstrates New York state's commitment to working with local leaders to find smart, innovative solutions to strengthen the economy, improve the quality of the natural environment and enhance the livability of the local community, according to town representatives. more

Victorian Era topic of historical group's meeting

On Thursday, November 14, Gerard Muhl will talk about currency and banking in the Victorian Era and how it affected commerce in Brockport and western New York. The talk, illustrated by slides and artifacts, will take place at the Morgan Manning House located at 151 Main Street in Brockport. It is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be served. more

At the recent Club Annual Installation Dinner, Dr. Jim Faux of Brockport was installed as president of the Kiwanis Club Brockport for 2002-2003. Also installed were Vice-President - Carol Benedetti, Treasurer - Wes Byers and Secretary - Cheryl Boucher. more

Children and stress presentation scheduled in Spencerport
Dr. Dennis Boike will be returning to Spencerport on Tuesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. for a presentation about "Helping Children Cope With Stress." Boike will talk about developing stress-proofing strategies and will offer some recommendations for parents and educators to help ensure positive youth coping skills. more

November 12 at 7:15 p.m. the Greece TOUGHLOVE® Parent Support Group will hear Larry Crawford, Monroe County Sheriff, on the recent change in the PINS (Persons In Need of Supervision) law and how this impacts parents. Trail sweepers
The Adopt-A-Trail Committee of the Town of Sweden conducted its second annual end-of-season "sweep" of the Erie Canal towpath on Saturday, October 26. About 60 volunteers have participated in the program this year, including about 25 in the sweep. more

Twig fund raiser features "Men of Brockport" calendar
A project of the Sparkleberry Twig of the Lakeside Memorial Hospital offers the opportunity to meet the men of Brockport. The Sparkleberry Twig 2003 Calendar of Brockport's Finest features a photograph and brief bio of a local Brockport man for each month of the year, including one of Lakeside Memorial Hospital's own, Dr. Garth Laidlaw. more

Sixteen aspiring engineers at Brockport High School will design and build a 20,300 square foot skateboard park for the Town of Sweden with the help of their teacher Brett Handley and consultants from a variety of professions. more

C-C announces superintendent choice
The Churchville-Chili Board of Education has offered the position of superintendent of schools to Annemarie Spadafora. Spadafora has been superintendent of the Holland School District in Holland, NY, just south of Buffalo, since 1998. more

Churchville-Chili to dedicate new construction
Churchville-Chili Central School District will host a Building Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, November 16 beginning at 9:30 a.m. All community residents, students and staff are invited to attend this event. This celebration will begin with tours of the Transportation Facility followed by a dedication of that new building. more

Community members invited to join
Spencerport schools' Budget Advisory Committee

Spencerport School District residents are invited to apply to join the district's Budget Advisory Committee. The committee, which is appointed by the school board, will help develop the district's 2003-04 school budget. The board and Superintendent of Schools Phillip W. Langton are looking for six district residents willing to serve on this committee as members at large. more

Cosgrove students send thousands of pencils to Afghanistan
Cosgrove Middle School students in Spencerport have sent more than 11,000 pencils - plus some other schools supplies - to children in Afghanistan in an effort organized by two seventh-grade students. more

Hilton's Capital Project presentations set for public meetings
The Hilton School District's $57.9 million Capital Project, which is expected to begin in the spring, is being presented to all interested parents and community members at a series of meetings this fall, according to Superintendent of Schools John Cooper. more

ExxonMobil has awarded a $500 Educational Alliance grant to Munn Elementary School in Spencerport. The grant will be used to buy science equipment. more

Paving the way at Churchville-Chili School
The Churchville-Chili Sports Booster Club is in the midst of their "Buy A Brick" campaign. Proceeds from this campaign will help finance the construction of a much anticipated concessions stand building that will be located at the new stadium complex. more

Silent Auction planned at Nik Lite concert
The local business community has been generous in its support of "Music for Manhattan," donating well over a hundred items for the silent auction. The auction is being held concurrently with the concert on November 6 at the Spencerport High School East Gym. The concert starts at 6:30 p.m. and features Nik Lite, a production of Nick and the Nice Guys. more

SUNY Brockport choreography students will share their work
SUNY College at Brockport's graduate and undergraduate dance choreographers will share their new works with the public on November 7, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. in the Hartwell Theater 152. The students' new works comprise the first student concert of the season. more

H-P seniors to travel to Canada
The Hilton-Parma Seniors will travel to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for the "100 Years of Christmas" program. Travel back over 100 years and experience an early settler's Christmas at the Battlefield House Museum, a Victorian Christmas at Dundurn Castle and an Edwardian Christmas at the Whitehern House. more

Basketball tournament Hall of Fame inductees named
The JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament, which is the oldest running NCAA Division III tourney in the nation, has announced its sixth class of inductees into the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame in conjunction with its 37th annual event, which will be held January 14-18, 2003. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics hosts Rising Star training camp
Bright Raven Gymnastics was selected for the third consecutive year to be the host site for the Region 6 USA Gymnastics 2002 Rising Star Training Camp October 19 and 20. 87 young USAG athletes from throughout New York state had the opportunity to work with many top coaches in their field. more

Three Nazareth tennis players, who helped lead Nazareth's Golden Flyers to the conference championship, were honored with the announcement of the 2002 Empire 8 women's tennis all-conference teams. more
