3M purchases Oxford Street homes
The 3M Company has finalized a deal to purchase five Oxford Street residences in the village of Brockport. Negotiations had been on-going for several months between the homeowners and the former Brockport manufacturer. 3M has acknowledged some responsibility for the presence of hazardous waste in the vicinity of its former plant. The purchase of the homes on the east side of Oxford Street further acknowledges the responsibility. more

Brockport residents get look at new subdivision plans
The Brockport Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Monday, March 12 at 7:45 p.m. at the village hall regarding the site plans for a new subdivision off of East Avenue. Developer Don Hibsch has applied for approval of his cluster housing tract, under the village’s new cluster housing ordinance, for a 65-home subdivision. more

Brockport to survey remaining historic buildings
With its Main Street designated a local historic preservation district and plans to apply for state and national designation for the business district, Brockport’s Historic Preservation Board has turned its attention to the nearly 500 other buildings in the village that are 100 years old or older. more

Churchville trustees to consider rezoning request in April
The Churchville Village Board will hold a public hearing April 16 to discuss a request to change the zoning on a 10-acre parcel of land on North Sanford Road in the village from "highway commercial" to "light industrial." more

Former Attorney General Janet Reno will deliver a lecture at SUNY Brockport’s Tuttle North Complex on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. more

Spencerport Jubilee to reopen as an IGA
The closed Spencerport Jubilee grocery market will reopen as an IGA in May, according to new owner Mike Ward. Empty since last fall, the reopening of the Spencerport grocery store will be much appreciated by residents who have had to travel to neighboring communities to shop and by local politicians and nearby businesses who didn’t want to see the anchor store stay empty for long. more

Stetson grievance to be heard in April
A misconduct complaint filed by the Stetson Club, the union that represents Brockport police officers, will be heard in a Rochester court in April, according to Brockport Village Attorney Roy Heise. more

Three seek two Churchville village board seats
Churchville residents will have to choose among three candidates for two seats on the Churchville Village Board of Trustees when they head to the polls Tuesday, March 20. more

Village seeks NYS Small Cities grant
The Village of Holley will again seek approximately $400,000 in community development block grant funding from the New York State Governor's Office for Small Cities (GOSC), as last year's submission was not funded. Grant funds will be used to help replace sanitary sewer and water lines along New York State Route 31, in conjunction with the New York State Department of Transportation's (DOT) Route 31 realignment project. more

Personal watercraft and young boaters
safety course offered at Letchworth
On April 28 and June 2, the New York State Park Police, Genesee Region, will be conducting a Personal Watercraft Safety Course at the Administration Building located in Letchworth State Park. This course will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Saturday. Students are required to attend one full day of instruction in order to be certified. The New York State Law requires the following persons to attend and receive certification prior to operation of any boat or personal watercraft without supervision. more

Three seats up on Brockport village board
Brockport residents will elect a mayor and two trustees in an election to be held Tuesday, June 19. The seats carry four year terms and are currently held by Mary Ann Thorpe (mayor), James Whipple and Norman Knapp. more

High schools host college information night
Spencerport High School is hosting a college information night coordinated by Spencerport and four other school districts: Brockport, Hilton, Kendall and Holley. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. more

Nursing scholarship offered by Orleans County American Legion
A new scholarship will be awarded to an Orleans County graduating senior, Class of 2001. The recipient will be chosen by a committee of the Orleans County American Legion. Deadline for applications is May 1. more

Petitions available for Spencerport Board of Education seats
Candidates wishing to run for the Spencerport Central Schoool Board of Education must submit petitions to the district clerk on or before Thursday, April 12 at 4 p.m. more

Spencerport fourth-graders celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday
Fourth-graders in Joanne Katz's class at Taylor Elementary School painted Dr. Seuss characters on the windows of their classroom to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. more

Riga/Churchville Seniors meet for Mystery Trip
The Senior Citizens of Riga/Churchville will have their monthly meeting/luncheon on March 13. This will be a Mystery Trip. The bus will leave about 10 a.m. from the American Legion on Buffalo Road. Cost is $5. Members are reminded to bring basket raffle donations at this time. more

Cadets lose to Edison in semifinals
Edison Tech ran out to a 5-0 lead to start the game and never looked back on their way to a 83-60 win over Hilton in the Class AA sectional playoff semi-finals. more

Hilton Area Swim Team members swim laps for fundraiser
On January 8, 24 area youths, members of the Hilton Area Swim Team (HAST) swam over 42 miles in a fundraiser Swim-a-thon. These athletes, ages 8-17, swam over 3,000 laps. The swimmers decided to donate $300 of the proceeds to the Make A Wish Foundation in the name of Sammy Alimentato, a Hilton High School student who, in December of 2000, lost his battle with cancer. In addition, over 60 lbs. of canned goods were donated to the Hilton/Parma Food Bank. more

Holley hosts wrestling tournament
The Holley Wrestling Club will sponsor a tournament on Saturday, March 24 for wrestlers five-years-old up to juniors in high school. Weigh-ins will be held on Friday, March 23 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for all or Saturday, March 24 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, and Novice; and Saturday, March 24 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for Schoolboy and High School. more

Holley studies football team feasibility
For more than 28 years, the Holley Central School district has been without a football team for its high school students. That may be about to change. more

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
begins accepting applications for spring turkey hunting
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alabama is accepting applications for spring turkey hunting. The refuge instituted a lottery system last year to fill the limited number of turkey hunting permits. To participate, interested hunters must send their name, address, telephone number and turkey hunting stamp number in a letter or 3x5 card along with a non-refundable $5 processing fee to the refuge at: Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, 1101 Casey Road, Basom, NY 14013-9730. more

Lady Bees advance to final
The Byron-Bergen girl's basketball team advanced to the Class CCC title game with a 42-41 win over Perry February 26 at Fairport High School. more

Saints lose in semi-finals
The Churchville-Chili boy's basketball team lost a third quarter lead and a sectional semi-final playoff game to McQuaid 60-50 February 27 at the Blue Cross Arena. more

Spencerport coach is finalist for award
Bill Jacoutot, Spencerport's wrestling coach for the past 20 years, is a finalist for the 2001 National High School Athletic Coaches Association's Coach of the Year award in wrestling. The wrestling Rangers have had great success under Jacoutot's leadership, compiling a 230-22-1 record for a winning percentage of 90 percent. more
