Auction will end apple
production for Parma grower
Pending Parma Zoning Board approval, part of the well-tended, manicured orchards of the Gioia Farms along Dunbar Road in Parma will be divided into 17 building lots and sold at auction. This is the first phase of a total dispersal of the 260 acre farm that produced 50,000 bushels of fresh fruit in an average season. more

Brockport turns to fixing internal police department problems
Cleared of criminal wrongdoing by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, the Brockport Police Department is now in the process of fixing internal problems the sheriff’s department uncovered during a nine week investigation. more

Byron-Bergen Scout competes in New York City
Albert Donovan, a senior at Byron-Bergen High School and a student at the Genesee Valley BOCES in Batavia, competed in the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association Competition in New York City over Easter vacation. He and partner, Adam Rayner of Attica, competed against 40 other teams from around the United States, Canada and Germany. They took fifth place in the nation, winning tools and scholarship money. more

C-C district residents vote on $49M budget May 15
Churchville-Chili Central School District’s proposed 2001-2002 budget is up more than 8.5 percent over this year, with 5.4 percent in new spending and 3.2 percent in new debt. more

Church windows get rehab
After illuminating the sanctuary for almost 150 years of worship, nine 16-foot-high stained glass windows were removed from the Union Congregational United Church of Christ on North Main Street in the village of Churchville May 4. more

Churchville Lions gift library with Braille system
The Newman Riga Library has received a donation from the Churchville Lions Club in the form of computer software. Ed-It PC is a direct-entry Braille system for the Braillist. It can do literary formats, textbooks and more. After entry of data onto floppy disks, the disks can then be run through an embosser to generate "print" copy. Such technology eliminates the need for huge amounts of space to store multiple volumes of paper. more

Four candidates on C-C Board of Education ballot
Voters in the Churchville-Chili Central School District will choose from four candidates to fill three seats on the board of education May 15. School board members are elected to a three-year term, and serve without pay. more

Hamlin Lions Club dedicates medical loan closet
The Hamlin Lions Club would like to invite the community to the opening and dedication of its new Medical Loan Closet facility. After more than a year of planning, fund raising and construction, it is finally completed. more

Nesbitt supports petition drive for "Summertime Holiday" from gas taxes
New York State Assemblyman Charlie Nesbitt (R, C-Albion) said he is in support for a statewide petition drive aimed at generating grass-roots support for providing motorists with a summertime holiday from gas taxes. Nesbitt said the petition drive is being sponsored by the Assembly Republican Conference and calls for the temporary suspension of the state's four percent sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel. more

Tips on financing automobile purchases
Assemblymember Susan John (131st District) said she received an advisory from the NYS Superintendent of Banks. It is designed to provide consumers with useful information about the pricing of auto loans and leases that are arranged through third parties. "As you may be aware," she said, "many lenders with active retail lending operations have developed relationships with third party loan originators, including automobile dealerships." more

Village Plaza IGA goes high tech
When the Village Plaza IGA opens May 20 in Spencerport, it will feature one of the area's first self-checkout scanners for do-it-yourself shopping. more

Ag Awareness Committee seeks volunteers
The Orleans County 4-H Fair, a member of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs, has been chosen to participate in a state-wide program designed to bring current and emerging agricultural practices and technologies to the attention of the public. The county was one of 13 chosen out of 56 who applied. more

Brockport raises water rates
The Village of Brockport has raised its water rates eight cents per thousand gallons to $2.93. That rate increase had been levied against the village in January by the Monroe County Water Authority. The authority wholesales water to the village which in turn retails the water to local customers. more

Girl Scouts plan alumnae picnic
The Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley Alumnae Association invites all current and former adult Girl Scouts to rediscover camping and outdoor memories, and meet new and old friends on Wednesday, June 13, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Girl Scout Program Center, 1020 John St., West Henrietta, New York 14586. more

Hilton Gazebo Band performs at historical museum event
A salute to spring by the Hilton Gazebo Band will be heard from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 19 at the Parma Museum, 460 Parma Center Road. Those who attend can bring a lawn chair for seating. Along with free museum tours from 1 to 2 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m., other events of the day will include sales of autographed books by town historian Shirley Cox Husted, including her new histories of Greece, New York and Rochester. more

Poppies are in bloom again
From May 17 to May 28, American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion members, in their blue caps, will offer poppies in exchange for a small donation to remember the men and women who made the supreme sacrifice. Funds raised help veterans and their families who are in need. more

Byron Bergen proposes $15 million budget
Byron Bergen School district residents will vote May 15 on a $15 million budget proposal for 2001-2002. Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the elementary school gymnasium. more

Five candidates vie for three seats in Holley School Board elections
Holley School Board incumbent Donna Bopp faces four challengers in her bid for re-election. Newcomers Elaine Berg, Ralph Gleason, John O’Mara and Harold Phillips have also thrown their hats into the ring for this year's election. On May 15, voters will be asked to decide which of the three candidates will be chosen to fill three-year terms. more

Frank Reich, former Buffalo Bills quarterback, will be Genesee Community College's 2001 Commencement Speaker. more

Hilton elementary art work on display at Greece shop
There is currently a display of fifth and sixth grade art work from Hilton's Northwood and Village Elementary Schools in the cafe at Barnes and Noble in Greece Ridge Mall. "The display will run for the entire month of May and is an opportunity to show off the students' talents to the community in such a visible space," according to elementary art teacher Laurie Steele. "Since it has been on display we have had wonderful comments," said Steele. more

Holley voters to see increased school property tax rate
Holley School administrators and board members on Tuesday, May 8 presented a budget they say takes into consideration what the community can afford while still protecting the "educational soundness" of the district. more

Two fifth graders from St. John the Evangelist School in Greece were among the 10 winners of a "My Favorite Older Friend" essay contest sponsored by Wesley Community, a nursing home and senior living community on East Avenue. more

WE-MO-CO cosmetology student places in NYS competition
Hillary DeMayo, a cosmetology student in Laurie Salladin's class at the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center, took third place in the New York State Cosmetology Association Student Competition in Verona, NY on April 30. more

WE-MO-CO students honored at ceremony
Nearly 500 WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center students from nine western Monroe Orleans County Districts will be honored at a ceremony on Friday, June 15, 7:15 p.m. at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. more

Students from the WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center in Spencerport earned top honors at the VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America) state skills competition in Syracuse on April 5-6. more

Baseball opens in Brockport
When umpires shout "play ball" in Brockport next week, there will be a difference that few players or parents will notice. For the first time, Brockport Junior Baseball League’s programs for boys and girls under the age of 12 will be part of the official Little League program. more

Brockport softball falls to Cortland in SUNYAC championship semi-finals
Freshman Sara Hinrichs (Hamlin) went 2-for-3 and sophomore Kristen Clark (Hilton) scattered eight hits over seven innings, but it wasn't enough as the SUNY Brockport softball team fell to the Cortland Red Dragons, 3-0, in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Championships. The Golden Eagles finish the season 27-13 and may receive an ECAC berth. more

Brockport squeaks out a win
Scoreless after eight innings, senior Katie Schweinfurth drove a two-out hit just past the glove of the shortstop and into center field to score Amanda Thompson from second base and give the Blue Devils a 1-0 win over Victor May 5. The RBI was Schweinfurth's 14th of the season on 21 hits. more

Kendall Sports Boosters to receive Chapter V Appreciation Award
The Kendall Sports Boosters Club will be honored with a 2000-2001 Appreciation Award from the Chapter V Athletic Administrators Association on May 17 at its Annual Spring Awards Luncheon at the Country Club of Mendon. James Sauberan, Kendall athletic director, will present Booster President Robert Gaylord with the award. more

Rangers sweep Saints
The Spencerport Rangers swept a doubleheader against Churchville-Chili by identical 6-3 scores May 7. In the first game, Josh Knapp was 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored and two RBI to back Justin Colby's four-hit pitching effort. The Rangers put the game away by scoring four runs in the second inning. Dan Rudd accounted for two of the three Saints' runs with a two-run home run. Rich Pozzuolo picked up a save by pitching the final outs for the Rangers. more

Saints netters beat Rangers
The Churchville-Chili boys tennis team swept all four singles matches and went on to defeat Spencerport 5-2 May 4. more

SAREP and DEC team up for 10th annual Fishing Jamboree
Kids will learn important aquatic ecology principles and have the chance to try fishing on June 2. Finger Lakes Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H offices and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will hold the tenth annual 4-H Sport fishing and Aquatic Resources Education Program (SAREP) Youth Fishing Jamboree at DEC Region 8 Headquarters, 6274 East Avon Road, Avon. Rotating workshop topics include aquatic sampling, fish ID, knot tying, backyard bass, and fishing safety. more
