Committee seeks to reduce duplication of services -
starting with Brockport’s police department
A group of Village of Brockport taxpayers, stung by a 17 percent tax increase in 2002 and facing the possibility of a much larger increase in 2003, are banding together in an effort to force a referendum to eliminate the village’s police department. more

Churchville gazebo, clock tower under construction
The foundations are in and ready for construction to begin on the gazebo and clock tower at the Village of Churchville's new municipal park on the banks of Black Creek on East Buffalo Street. more

Christmas at the Lighthouse
This year marks the seventh annual "Christmas at the Lighthouse" event sponsored by the Friends of Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse. On Sunday, October 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse will be decorated for Christmas and open to the public for free tours. more

Rabideau elected director of Lions Clubs International
John E. Rabideau, of Churchville, was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association's 85th International Convention, held in Osaka, Japan, July 8-12. more

Seventh District officers visit Auxiliary
The annual visitation of the Seventh District officers of the American Legion Auxiliary will be held on Thursday, October 10, at the 40/8 Club, 933 University Avenue, Rochester. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. sharp, preceding the regular meeting. more

Conference addresses issues with working with rural elderly
Coordinated Care, Community Concern, The NYS Division of Veteran's Affairs and Southtown's Rural Preservation Corporation are proud to present the 4th Annual Working with Rural Elderly Conference for human service agencies providing services to the elderly in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties. more

Daily hours of operation along the New York State Canal System changed effective Thursday, October 3. more

Golf tournament funds help breast cancer group
In August, Arrowhead Golf Club of Spencerport held its 18th tournament to raise money for breast cancer. From that tournament they raised $3,900 and donated it to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. At the end of September, a raffle was held for a pair of tickets to the 2003 LPGA at Oak Hill Country Club. They raised an additional $750 from raffle and the two winning tickets went to Sue Gaffney. more

Hilton East hosts Classic Car Show
On Saturday, September 28, the community was invited to enjoy a car show hosted by Hilton East Assisted Living. Genesee Valley Antique Cars brought a full array of classic and custom cars that ranged from a 1927 Ford Model T to a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. The community voted on their favorite cars. The winning cars were a 1930 Ford Model A owned by Jerry Moster and a 1955 Studebaker Coupe owned by Murray and JoAnn Stahl. more

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge opens weekends
The headquarters building/visitor center at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) located in the Towns of Alabama and Shelby, will be open on weekends for the fall season. Beginning September 19 and extending through November 16, the building will be open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. more

New book by Parma historian released
"Talking Feather's Favorite Indian Legends," an anthology of 48 Native American folk legends by Shirley Cox Husted, is now available at the Lift Bridge Book Store in Brockport and the gift shop at McCracken Farm in Sweden, where Husted portrays the storyteller Talking Feather every day in October. The book is dedicated to Shirley's Indian great-grandmother, Rachel Wheeler Cox. Copies are also available from the author for $9.50 plus postage. more

Patriotic display on exhibit during October
"Our Flag is Still There," an exhibit of more than 80 photographs taken by St. Lawrence School students after the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York City on 9/11/2001 will be on display at the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Hilton-Parma Road, throughout October. more

Scholarships available for DEC camps
The Hamlin Conservation Board is offering scholarships for DEC campers for the Summer of 2003. more

Local Girl Scout receives Gold Award
Lani Toyama, a member of Girl Scout Troop 637, has received her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. She was presented her awards at the Gold Award Banquet on June 9 and was also honored at the Celebration of Achievement in Rochester on June 23. To earn the award, a girl must complete the GS Challenge, Career Exploration Pin, Leadership Award, and interest project patches. more

Toy Shelf project underway for Brockport/Sweden
The Brockport/Sweden Toy Shelf provides gifts for children at Christmas time who might not otherwise enjoy a happy holiday. The first meeting of this group will be held on Saturday, October 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport. more

League of Women Voters launches new service for voters
New Yorkers looking for non-partisan information on candidates, issues and the election process itself will have the advantage of a new service from the League of Women Voters of New York State. For the first time, the league is putting all of its voter education efforts - a website, brochures, public service announcements and community-based events like debates - under one umbrella. more

Correction
According to school district representatives, the October 9 meeting regarding the Churchville-Chili superintendent search is a training session for the interview committee, not a staff and community meeting as previously reported by the district. The purpose of this meeting is to prepare committees for upcoming superintendent candidate interviews. more

Hilton High School Alumni Association meets October 23
The Hilton High School Alumni Association invites all interested alumni to attend a meeting of the association on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. in the school's library, according to High School Principal David Dimbleby. more

Hilton High School Spirit Week Homecoming Oct. 12
Hilton High School's Spirit Week of pep rallies and school spirit will be held the week of October 7. Hilton Homecoming will be held Friday, October 12, with a parade beginning at 6 p.m. down West Avenue, Hilton to the High School, located at 400 East Avenue. The parade features the Crimson Cadets Marching Band and class floats. more

Hilton High School Open House October 10
Hilton High School will hold its annual Open House Thursday, October 10, at the High School, 400 East Avenue, Hilton for all interested parents. The Open House begins at 7 p.m., but parents of current ninth and tenth graders interested in the academically-challenging International Baccalaureate (IB) program, should come at 6:15 p.m.-6:45 p.m. for a presentation by IB Coordinator Barbara Surash in the school's auditorium. more

Hilton Board of Education to hear survey results
The Hilton Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting on Tuesday, October 8, at 7 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room of the Quest/West Avenue Building, 225 West Avenue, Hilton, to discuss the findings of the 2002 Harris Interactive Survey. more

PTSA Membership Drive set for October 10
Holley Elementary School will hold its annual Open House on Thursday, October 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to meet their children's teachers and see their classrooms. The program is also open to grandparents and relatives. Additional parking and a shuttle bus will be available at the Holley Middle School/High School. more

The Spencerport School District is holding a community forum for residents interested in getting information about the elementary school boundary change process. The forum is on Tuesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the administration building, 71 Lyell Avenue. more

Brockport falls to HF-L
The Brockport Blue Devils girl’s soccer team had eight chances in the first half alone, but could not capitalize in a 3-0 loss to Class C defending sectional champion Honeoye Falls-Lima September 30. more

Brockport soccer teams ready for Homecoming
Brockport's varsity soccer teams will compete as part of Homecoming events. On Saturday, October 12 the Girls Varsity Soccer team will take on Churchville-Chili at 5 p.m. The boys will play Rush-Henrietta at 7 p.m. more

Blue Devils sweep Arcadia
The Brockport Blue Devils didn’t lose a single set in a 5-0 sweep over Greece Arcadia in the final regular season girl’s tennis match of the season. more

Buy a Brick at Spencerport
The Spencerport Rangers Football Boosters are selling bricks for the walkway to the district's new football and track stadium. Each brick will be inscribed with a name chosen by the person or business purchasing it. more

Pointon scores two for Rangers
Senior Jamie Pointon scored one goal in each half as the Spencerport Rangers cruised to a 4-2 victory over Brighton in girl’s soccer September 26. more
