"Bienvenida" celebration welcomes migrant farmworkers
Sunday, June 22, is the day set for the annual community "Bienvenida," or "Welcome," celebration in Brockport for hundreds of migrant farmworkers who have arrived to start the farming season. For over two decades the greater Brockport community has extended hospitality to migrant workers and celebrated agriculture, the number one industry in our area, in this manner. more
Children's theatre workshop debuts in July
A Theatre Workshop is being formed in the Spencerport area for children. Children in grades three to six, who like to perform on stage, are invited to become members. more
Environmental groups sue state over landfill decision
The environmental groups Stop Polluting Orleans County and Albany-based Citizens Environmental Coalition filed a lawsuit in Albany County Supreme Court June 10 against state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Erin Crotty, challenging Crotty's decision last February to rescind permit conditions that required Waste Management of New York to pay for two DEC expert monitors at a proposed landfill in Albion. more

Hilton's Kiddie Queen and King contest begins
In conjunction with their 2003 Firemen's Carnival July 23-26, the Hilton Fire Department is sponsoring the annual contest to select a Kiddie King and Queen. Any boy or girl, ages 6-10, residing in the Hilton Parma Fire District (area served by Hilton Fire Department) is eligible. more
Historic preservation recognized
On Friday, May 30, the Chili Historic Preservation Board presented a special award of recognition to Roberts Wesleyan College for its renovation of Roberts Hall. At a reception which marked the occasion, Peter Widener, the chairman of the board and Chili historian, cited the college for the "meticulous care given to the structure in its restoration." more

Participants at this year's American Cancer Society Relay For Life in Spencerport, held June 6-7, did more than just walk circles around the track. They became part of a national movement that has raised over $1 billion for the fight against cancer. more
