Heavy pumpkin crop expected for Halloween
September has been very favorable to pumpkin growers, Bob King, agricultural specialist at Cornell Cooperative Extension said. During the first nine days of September, pumpkin growers experienced ideal conditions for explosive growth, sizing and maturity of the crop due to several days of hot and dry weather that was preceded and followed by bouts of heavy rains. more

Hilton couple affected twice by Hurricane Frances
Hurricane Frances destroyed the life-long dreams of Fred and Agnes Harrington when it came through Vero Beach and demolished a home they had purchased in March 2004. more

Hilton receives funding for firefighter assistance programs
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) announced that the Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP) of the Department of Homeland Security has awarded $803,325 in Firefighter Grants to 12 fire departments in New York. The Walker Fire District in Hilton received $34,290 for operations and firefighter safety. more

Lions Club of Chili celebrates 40 years
On Saturday, September 25, 2004, the Lions of Chili will celebrate 40 years of service to their community, which includes the town of Chili. more

Local filmmakers place in contest
Two local filmmakers, Justin Talbott and Justin Noto, have captured the essence of the political campaign in their new film, "Landlocked." The 10-minute film depicts the election of a fictitious Pennsylvania governor. The key issue of the election is the candidate's stand on whaling (killing of whales) in Pennsylvania, a state without an Atlantic Ocean border. more

Monroe County seeks foster parents for children
Due to an increased need for foster parents, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks called for all interested and eligible adults to attend an information session on how to become a foster parent. The sessions begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. more

New library borrowing privileges announced
Assemblymember Susan John announced that the New York State Library is expanding free borrowing privileges to all New York residents 18 and older. Residents now can borrow on-site from the State Library's collection of more than 20 million items and will have direct remote access to NOVEL, New York's first statewide virtual library, from home, office or school. more

New website enhances New York travel experience

Orleans DAR receives $10,000 grant
Assembly Republican Leader Charles H. Nesbitt announced the awarding of a grant for the Orleans County of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The $10,000 grant will be used by DAR to continue restoration efforts on the nearly 160-year-old building that houses the organization. more

Roberts hosts community development conference
Dr. John M. Perkins, founder and president of the Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development, will give the keynote address at the "Building Healthy and Sustainable Neighborhoods" conference September 30 at Roberts Wesleyan College, 2301 Westside Drive in North Chili. more

Spend a Sunday afternoon learning about area history
Seven museums and historical societies in this area are sponsoring the second annual "Olde Northampton Heritage Day" on Sunday afternoon, September 26. They are jointly holding open houses, inviting area residents to tour their facilities and view their museum collections. Admission is free. more

Spencerport native enjoys the view from 14,000 feet
Brian LeSchander is not someone who keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground. He is, however, a man who lives life to the fullest and has done so since he started skydiving at age 15. Now, at age 50, LeSchander has completed 3,000 jumps - and he doesn't plan on stopping there. more

Sweden dedicates road to former assessor Alan Bader
The Town of Sweden held a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new road that will serve the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center and Royal Garden Apartments. Sweden officials felt that a safer entrance from Route 19 as needed for both users of the Community Center and residents of the apartment complex. more

Join the geocaching fun at Genesee Region State Parks
The Genesee State Park Region will be hosting "Geocaching Genesee" in conjunction with the New York Geocaching Organization (NYGO) on September 25 and 26. Geocaching is a rapidly growing recreational activity best described as a high-tech treasure hunt. more

Monroe County Fire Academy graduates
Ten members of the Chili Fire Department graduated from the Monroe County Fire Academy. Upon completion of their basic training, each member will return to their companies to continue their training and look forward to serving their neighbors in the town of Chili. more

Pop top monies benefit Lakeside
The ongoing "Pop Your Tops for Lakeside" drive raised $155.70 from the sale of 519 pounds of pop can tops. Lyell Metalico gave a matching donation of $150 making the grand total received $305.70. more

Churchville-Chili schools receive grants

Chestnut Ridge, Fairbanks Road and Churchville Elementary Schools each have received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program. The schools will use this grant to support the literacy initiative. more

Hilton names Teacher of the Year
Music teacher Marcia Sheremeta, a 32-year-teaching veteran, has been named 2004-05 Hilton Central School District's Teacher of the Year. Nominated by her students and colleagues, Sheremeta received the Hilton Central School Teachers Association award at Hilton High School, presented by HCSTA President Kathleen Donahue who said that she is noted for her "inspirational passion for music." more

Homecoming bonfire tradition continues at C-C High School
Churchville-Chili Senior High School will continue the tradition of the annual homecoming bonfire on Thursday, September 30 in front of the Churchville-Chili High School. more

Manager of Communications Group appointed
Mark Ball was appointed by the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Board of Education as the manager of the communications group in Communication and Technology Services (CaTS). more

Outstanding Biology Teacher Award presented
The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) named Kathy Hoppe, a science resource teacher at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year from New York state. more

Sophomore Rebecca Bartl was the last to finish her match and her 7-5, 7-2 win at third singles gave Hilton a 4-3 win over Rush-Henrietta and their first victory of the season in girl's tennis. more

Bullard hat trick leads Bees
Sophomore Bobby Bullard scored three goals and Jon Flannery added two assists as Byron Bergen shutout rival Kendall 4-0 in boy's soccer at Jurh's Field in Kendall. more

Dedication celebrates facilities, community teamwork
Hundreds of community members, representatives of local organizations, politicians and Spencerport football fans showed up Saturday, September 11, to dedicate the new Ranger athletic facilities at Spencerport Central School District. more

Gymkhana Rides Again
Participation in this year's Gymkhana raised $1,357.05 to benefit Lakeside Memorial Hospital. Participants competed in a series of timed horseback events. Speed classes included clover leaf barrels, straight barrels, Texas T-race, key hole race, arena run and pole bending and were offered in both Junior and Senior divisions. more

Hilton Cadets volleyball kicks off new season
Hilton's boys volleyball team returns 11 players to this year's team. After a rebuilding year in 2003, the Cadets look to a mix of experience and youth to lead them in a tough Division II volleyball league. more

Northwest YMCA offers swimming trials
The Northwest YMCA Stingray Swim Team will be offering a one week trial program, Monday, September 27 through Friday, October 1, for interested swimmers ages 6-18. more

Rangers lose in second half
Spencerport led 1-0 at half-time in girl's soccer, but couldn't hold on as Greece Aracadia scored three in the second half for a 3-1 victory. more

Spencerport Sports Booster Club hosts girls' soccer tournament
Spencerport Central Schools will be hosting their annual Sports Booster Club Girls' Soccer Tournament on October 15 and 16 at the Spencerport Central Schools soccer stadium. The tournament is named in recognition of the support the Spencerport Sports Booster Club gives each year to the Ranger Athletic program. more

SUNY Brockport men's soccer team
raises funds for Golisano Children's Hospital

The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team had a very successful weekend to open the 2004 season. Not only did they win the 2004 SUNY Brockport Invitational to benefit Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong, but many children were winners as well. more
