Monroe County has been awarded more than $3 million in funding by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support housing rehabilitation, community development projects and to provide assistance for first-time homebuyers. more
Local teen tries hand as supreme court justice in D.C.
Gregory D. Strabel of Brockport was selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law (NYLF/LAW) from October 19 to October 24, in Washington, D.C. Having demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in the legal profession, Strabel will join approximately 350 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across the United States at the Forum on Law. more
Partyka Farms expands, keeps home town flavor
The life of a farmer may not be the life for everyone but for Jeff and Lora Partyka, it is their dream and has been since 1985. "When Jeff and I married, this land was all fruit farm," Lora said. But eventually she took the marketing background she acquired while growing up on her parent's farm in Niagara County and little by little Partyka Farms grew. more

The national economy may go through highs and lows, but in a New York Sea Grant-funded study Cornell researchers found that the state's recreational boaters spend $2.4 billion last year despite the poor summer weather. more

The Harley Davidson company may regret making Tony Cenzi wait. The Chili native was anxiously hoping to buy a Harley in 1996. He was told that there was a two-year waiting list. Cenzi, who grew up working on mini bikes with his father, Vince, and had his first motorcycle at 18 years old, wasn't about to wait two years. more
Spencerport Community Chorus concerts planned
The Spencerport Community Chorus is preparing for its 2004-2005 concert year. The chorus meets on Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church (The White Church) on Church Street in Spencerport, and is accepting new members through October and again in January. more
Spencerport parents uncomfortable with changes at Taylor school
The process of moving seventh through ninth grade students enrolled in the BOCES Therapeutic Day Treatment program didn't happen overnight, parent Virginia Nichols said and yet parents weren't notified of the changes taking place at Spencerport's Taylor Elementary School until the students were moved in and classes had begun. more
Walk, Bike group sponsors poster contest
The Walk, Bike Brockport Action Group is celebrating the month of October as the month of "Walktoberfest." As a way of encouraging everyone to review the rules for pedestrian and bicycle safety, the group is sponsoring a poster contest for grades K-5. more

The Byron-Bergen Central School District conducted a "Stay As You Are" drill for high school students and staff on September 28 while Genesee County Sheriff's Deputies practiced with the K-9 unit. more
GCC awarded National Science Foundation grant
Genesee Community College was awarded a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship grant (NSF-CSEMS). This award provides $268,000 for a four-year "Technology Opportunity Pathway" (TOP) program. more
Grant award recipients
St. John the Evangelist School received a $500 grant from Exxon Mobil Corporation. The grant will be used to help develop the school's technology program. Mr. and Mrs. Essat Ali presented Mrs. Preston with a check at the open house on September 30. more
Nationally known educator visits Byron-Bergen schools
Nationally known educator Dr. Mike Schmoker of Flagstaff, Arizona was the keynote speaker at School Improvement Day for faculty members of the Byron-Bergen and Oakfield-Alabama Central School District. more

Ogden Bear cheerleaders bring home trophy
The Ogden Bears Pee Wee cheerleading team traveled to Darien Lake to compete in a cheer competition. This annual event is sponsored by the Buffalo Jills cheerleading team and is used to promote cheerleading excellence in youth squads. more

Cristy Cousin, Michele Palma and Angela Bopp scored second half goals to lead Spencerport to a 3-0 victory over Webster-Schroeder in girl's soccer to break their five game winless streak. more
Ranger swimmers sweep breaststroke in comeback win
Jacklyn Cowles, Lara Spiegel and Elyse Benamat finished 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke as Spencerport overcame a seven-point deficit to defeat Churchville-Chili 97-88 in girl's swimming. more
Record breaking 5 mile for Apple Derby
A stiff wind and overcast sky did not deter 59 runners who participated in the 26th Annual Apple Derby 5-Mile Run on October 2. The traditional certified route laid perfect for Overall Champion, Ryan Pauling, who for the second year in a row broke the course record (24:46) out-distancing second place finisher, Jason Knarr (28:48) by over four minutes. more
