Bergen artist involved in large scale public sculpture project
In 2004, Bergen sponsored its first public mural, now in 2005 it will be sponsoring its first large scale public sculpture. The sculpture, which is the work of three artists, will be installed in Zuber Park on the corners of Main and Rochester on Monday, June 27. It will be on display through Independence Day. more

Brockport addresses FOIL issue
Freedom of Information (FOIL) requests have long been a point of contention between village residents and village officials in Brockport. At the June 20 board meeting, Mayor Josephine Matela pointed out that prior to her coming on board, there really was no procedure in place for FOIL requests. more

Brockport approves village manager position
By a margin of three to one, the position of village manager was created by the Village of Brockport. Trustee Mort Wexler cast the lone dissenting vote at the June 20 board meeting. more

Brockport Troop 111 celebrates Eagle Scout honor
On June 5, Troop 111 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor and presented Mark MacEwan with Boy Scouting's highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout. The ceremony was hosted by Scoutmaster Mike Sinopoli, with the assistance of former Scoutmaster Ken Rombaut, Eagle counselor Joe Wieczorek, Troop Committee Chairman Dave Moon, Assistant Scoutmaster Mike Krahe, and committee member Mark Scheda. more

Historical Society plans Victorian Garden Party
A Victorian Garden Party is planned for Sunday, August 7 at the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street in Brockport. Running from 3 to 6 p.m., it will be a premier event sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society. more

Photo entries sought for Apple Fest contest
The "Apple of My Eye" photo contest is extending a call for photographic entries. This year's theme for the 25th Anniversary of the Apple Fest is "Home Sweet Home." Pictures taken of any subject in the Hilton-Parma area, including all of western Monroe County, will be considered. more

Sculpture contest open to all arts enthusiasts
The Can-imals on parade and the Cool Kids Day Block Party is on. The canned goods sculpture contest and kids party is relocated to the Brockport Arts Festival on Saturday, August 13, said Steve Appleton, Cool Kids director. Appleton said it's not too late to sign up to build a Can-imals on Parade creation. more

Specialists expand care options at Lakeside Hospital
While offering the community access to care from doctors in specialized fields for many years, Lakeside Memorial Hospital continues to add to their specialty staff. By forging liaisons with physicians who offer clinic hours and perform surgeries at the Brockport hospital, administrators are striving to provide a broader range of services on the campus. more

Arc of Orleans planning for gala event
Mark Twain and Jill Kelly, two Buffalo notables, will be co-stars on September 10 when Arc of Orleans presents its Signature Series program. This event with formal dining, dancing, auction and twin receptions has grown into Orleans County's premiere social gala and this year it will return to the Holiday Inn, just off the NYS Thruway at Batavia. more

Miss Monroe County Fair pageant seeks contestants
The 2nd Annual Miss Monroe County Fair Pageant, slated for Saturday, July 16 is seeking contestants. This year the pageant will have four categories: Tiny Miss, Little Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Monroe County Fair. more

Candidates in the Village of Brockport elections were convinced residents wanted a change and election results may show they were right. On June 21, voters elected a new mayor and two new trustees. more

Assemblyman Bill Reilich (134 District) congratulated Elizabeth "Beth" Fenton, as a 2005 Disabilities Awareness Essay Winner. Her essay to her brother, Michael, who suffers from Sensory Integration Dysfunction received an Honorable Mention at the 2005 awards ceremony held at the Executive's Mansion in Albany. more

Students in Beth Erbelding's fourth grade class at Chestnut Ridge Elementary School investigated the life cycle of the toad using an Eggs to Toad science kit. more

Holley fifth graders recognized with citizenship award
Holley fifth graders Brianna Goodwin and Zachary Vickerson were named the 2005 recipients of the Catherine B. Press Citizenship Award. The award is given annually to a fifth-grade girl and boy who display caring, responsibility and good citizenship and is named after Catherine B. Press, who was a secretary at Holley Elementary School and provided funding for the award. more

Neighborhood games
Holley first graders learned classic children's games, from hopscotch to jump rope, just in time for summer vacation. The Project ADEPT through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES taught the students social skills, fitness and the value of rules, team play and cooperation. more

More than 250 third-graders in the school's chorus called "Barclay Kids Rock!" kicked off the Flag Day celebration and performed several songs. more

Students chosen for Empire State
Two high school juniors, one from Spencerport High School and one from Churchville-Chili, have been chosen to represent the Ferris Goodridge Unit #330 and Harvey C. Noone Unit 954 Churchville of the American Legion Auxiliary. Empire Girls State sessions will be at SUNY Brockport College from June 24 to 30. more

Four Brockport High School seniors are the first recipients of the Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation scholarships. The Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in October 2004. more

Holley fair promotes education and safety
On Saturday, June 11, Holley Karate presented the Third Annual Safety & Prevention Kids Fair. Senator George Maziarz was on hand to meet the nearly 200 children and parents who turned out for the event. more

Holley wrestling coach nominated for national honor
John J. Grillo, Holley wrestling coach and athletic director, will be honored at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) National Awards Banquet in Florida on June 30. He is one of eight finalists from around the country, one of whom will be selected as NHSACA Coach of the Year for wrestling. more

Rochester '96 Amerks consolation champs at Ronald McDonald AAA
The Rochester '96 Amerks captured the consolation championship prize at the Ronald McDonald Summer AAA tournament with a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over Toronto's Red Army squad on June 12. more

Spencerport names basketball, hockey coaches
Spencerport Central Schools announced that Michael Decillis has been named as the Rangers varsity girls basketball coach. He replaces Mark Moon who coached the Rangers for three years. It also announced that Brian Fedele has been named as the Rangers varsity hockey coach. more
