Eagle Scout project completed
In May 2005, Jonathan Pack from Troop 111 in Brockport fulfilled the requirements to become an Eagle Scout with the exception of an Eagle Scout project. He approached Dianna Clinton from Lifetime Assistance about a project and she took him on a tour of their Sensory Park which had a pond that was not wheelchair accessible. more

Lakeside Memorial Hospital appoints hospitalist
Lakeside Memorial Hospital announced the appointment of Philip Atigre, MD. He has joined Lakeside to implement a Hospitalist Program to provide care for inpatients. more

Lakeside Hospital shares in $8.85 million for top performing hospitals
Out of the 265 hospitals in New York state, only nine were named "top performers" and Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport is among the elite few. Hospitals participating in the Premier Hospital Quality Incentive demonstration, based on first year results in the national pay for performance initiative, will share in $8.85 million in Medicare bonus payments. more

Nominees sought for youth registration banquet
The Orleans County Youth Board will recognize local citizens at the 24th Annual Youth Recognition Banquet on Tuesday, May 9. This event is an opportunity to thank select individuals for their service to the community. more

create cards for military personnel

On Saturday, January 7, Orleans County 4-H members gathered at the Fairgrounds to participate in a community service project to create Valentine's Day cards for United States Armed Forces men and women. more

Otetiana Council reaches recruiting record
A record 1,900 Monroe County boys joined Cub Scouts during the recent recruiting campaign held by the Otetiana Council, Boy Scouts of America. more

Sweden residents speak out in favor of recycling center
"We're willing to pay more" and "We want the recycling center to stay" were the sentiments of the majority at the Sweden public information meeting on January 17. Close to 150 people packed the room to standing room only capacity to voice their opinions and opposition to the town considering closing the recycling center. more

Westside News Inc. publisher donates to Lakeside
Lakeside Foundation accepted a $1,000 donation from Keith Ryan, owner and publisher of Westside News Inc. and a resident of Spencerport. This gift is in recognition of all the individuals and businesses that have generously supported Lakeside through the many phone calls he made asking for support for Lakeside, according to hospital officials. more

The Fresh Air Fund's Spencerport area volunteer leaders are seeking committee members and host families for summer 2006. GCC chooses 'Genesee Reads' book
Genesee Community College's "Genesee Reads" Program, planned in cooperation with the area public libraries, will feature A Northern Light, a mystery novel written by New York author Jennifer Donnelly. The author will visit GCC March 23, meet with students and deliver a presentation about her work. more

Special sitters program planned
Parents of children with developmental disabilities need time away from home but finding someone to care for their son or daughter can often be a problem. In response to this, The Arc of Monroe County has established the Special Sitters Program which educates individuals over the age of 14 in how to care for people with special needs. more

Volunteers paint Lakeside Child Care Center

Workers' compensation reform sought
Senator George D. Maziarz, Chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, announced that he will meet with labor and business community leaders to determine why New York state's workers' compensation system is broken and how it can be fixed. Maziarz will seek guidance and input for how lawmakers can change state policies to stop the exodus of quality manufacturing jobs from New York. more

Byron-Bergen names Spelling Bee winners
The annual Robert Fowler Spelling Bee was held in December at Byron-Bergen Middle School with 33 participants qualifying for the competition by taking a preliminary test. more

GCC supports "Med-Tech" industrial park
Trustees of Genesee Community College unanimously supported the transfer of 30 acres of land to the Genesee County Economic Development Center for the business park, which could eventually accommodate up to 10 buildings encompassing 150,000 square feet of indoor space, and bring hundreds of high-tech jobs to the community. more

Hilton students receive Gutenberg Awards
Hilton High School graphic art students of teacher Tait Loe were presented with National Gutenberg Awards this month at Rochester Institute of Technology. more

Spencerport won three of the first four events of the meet and swam to a 93-76 victory at Hilton in boy's swimming. more

Walther 70th Brockport football All-American
Senior linebacker John Walther became the 41st different football player and eighth linebacker to earn All-American status when he was named to the Don Hansen All American Third Team. The 41 Golden Eagles have garnered 70 All-American awards since the team's inception in 1956. more
