Area municipalities receive grant funding
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to make multiple improvements benefiting residents living in the 1st Legislative District, which includes the Town of Sweden, as well as the Villages of Hilton and Brockport totaling $105,000 has been secured. The grants are recommended by County Executive Maggie Brooks and legislation has been submitted to the Monroe County Legislature, pending approval at the June 12 Legislature meeting. more
Church celebrates its heritage
The Parma Greece United Church of Christ, located at 1211 Manitou Road in Hilton, is celebrating its history with a special worship service on Sunday, May 27. The church was founded in 1834 by 14 local "brethren and sisters friendly to liberal Christianity." From the first meeting church members kept a journal, recording some of the events and activities of the day. more
Drama award named after SUNY Brockport theatre professor
The organizers of the Eighth Annual English Drama Festival, held each year at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, have created the "Dick St. George Award" in recognition of SUNY Brockport Professor Richard St. George's contributions to both the drama festival and the teaching of theatre at the University of Debrecen. more

New logo chosen for Hilton Apple Fest
The Hilton Apple Fest Board of Directors has selected the 2007 logo from the over 100 designs that were submitted. The winner of the design is Bobbie Prince, an artiest from Spencerport. This logo will be used on souvenirs including sweatshirts and tee shirts. One of the designs by Ryan Luce of Hamlin was selected to be placed on children's tee shirts this year. more
Orleans County Sheriff's office offers prom night safety tips
The prom or senior ball should be a positive experience for your child, one that he or she will never forget. Before the big night there is much to talk about such as gowns, tuxedos, who will share a limo and of course, who will be your son or daughter's date. But the most important part of that discussion should come from you, the parents, in explaining to your child that prom night safety is crucial in the planning process and that alcohol, drugs and cigarettes are not necessary for a fun and memorable evening, the sheriff wrote in a press release. more
Riga discusses need, costs for water
Town of Riga residents learned what expanding public water might cost them, and how long it might take to get it during a public information meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at the Churchville-Chili Intermediate School Auditorium. Town Engineer Paul Chatfield and Special Counsel Marcia Havens gave a presention on the findings of a Water Feasibility Study to a crowd of about 100 people. more
