Aurora House receives donation
Aurora House President, Sandie Ville, was contacted by Spencerport resident Gene Rinas who had participated in a raffle, benefiting Habitat for Humanity at the 2007 Home Show held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. He was interested in donating his prize, a 72-inch, half-round window depicting a scene taken from the book, Cinderella. more

Chamber calendars draw community support
The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce will publish the 15th edition of the Community Calendar this year. In November 2007, the calendars will be distributed as an insert with the Suburban News to approximately 7,000 homes in the Ogden-Spencerport area. more

Christ Community Church cited by Rural Opportunities, Inc.
Christ Community Church of Brockport was recognized by Rural Opportunities, Inc. at the company's Corporate Awards Luncheon on October 23. Dealing with the suicide of a loved one
Research shows that more than 60 percent of people in the United States will know someone who dies by suicide during the course of their lifetime and more than 20 percent will lose a family member. These startling statistics translate into hundreds of thousands of "survivors" who will be left behind to cope with the loss. more

Girl Scouts pop their tops for Lakeside
The ongoing "Pop Your Top for Lakeside" drive received pop can tops from a group of Spencerport Girl Scouts from troops 869 and 942 who collected pop tops for three years. Troop leaders are Jan Saxton and Janet Sformo. more

Holley scrambling for funds because of cuts
The Village of Holley spent a little more than $13,000 for an engineering study on the old high school building. The money was spent in anticipation of the receipt of a $15,000 state aid grant. Holley's funding was cut - as was the funding for many other projects across the state - by Governor Eliot Spitzer. more

Local church coalition to build Habitat House
The Southwest Habitat Coalition is a faith-based community group that has come together with the goal of sponsoring and building an affordable home for a Rochester family in need. The coalition is working in partnership with Flower City Habitat for Humanity. more

Police force wanted in Holley
Safety, security and a deterrent, were ideas tossed around when the residents met to discuss whether they wanted to keep or disband the police force in the village of Holley. more

Open space preserved in Parma
Monroe County will commit $250,000 in funding from its Green Space Initiative to the Town of Parma to preserve open space. more

Prep begins at Spencerport fire station site
Work began last week to prepare the site for construction of Spencerport Fire Station 1 on Lyell Avenue. Fire District Commissioner Chairperson Tom Friedo said two buildings will be demolished and concrete and black top removed to make ready for construction of the firehouse. more

Supreme champion
For the first time in many years, a hereford reigned supreme at the New York State Fair 4-H Show. After advancing from the cow/calf class, the two-year-old, Shortcake, and her March bull calf, Bear, were tapped as the Grand Champion Hereford by Judge Becky Rugenstein. more

A word a day
Holley third graders each have their own dictionary thanks to Albion Elks Lodge 1006. This is the third year that the Elks have donated dictionaries to the school as part of a nationwide program started in 1995 to help children with their reading skills. more

BHS plans for Broadway musical
The BHS Drama Club will showcase the finest in Broadway musicals when more than 80 actors, musicians and production staff present "Little Shop of Horrors." This musical debuted on Broadway in 1982, and was made into a 1986 feature film based on that musical. more

Firefighters visit Byron-Bergen
Firefighters from volunteer companies in Bergen, Byron, South Byron, Batavia, LeRoy and Churchville came to Byron-Bergen Elementary School in October to present a program about fire safety. more

Hilton names 'Teacher of the Year'
Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association Teacher of the Year for 2007-08, Village Elementary Music Teacher Charles Palella, was named at the annual Hilton staff convocation last month. more

Holley sets meetings on school's capital project
Holley school district officials have prepared their plans, had them approved by the board and are now taking the message to the community about two proposals that will be put forth on December 10 for a capital school project. more

Sidewalk makes walk to school safer
CHURCHVILLE - New York State Assemblywoman Susan John joined community leaders, school officials, neighbors and students in Churchville Thursday, October 25 for a ribbon cutting on a new section of sidewalk. The sidewalk on Park Road runs from West Buffalo Street around to the back of Churchville Elementary School, making it easier for students who walk to school. more

Blue Devils advance with late rally
Trailing two-games-to-one and by four points in the fourth game, Brockport scored the final six points to take the fourth game and came from behind to win the fifth and defeat McQuaid in quarterfinal action in the Section Five boy's volleyball tournament. more

The Ogden Bears Junior Midgets were victorious over Webster to become the 2007 Western New York Division III Champions. more

Board members of the Sweden Community Foundation dedicated a new baseball field at Sweden Town Park to former high school baseball coach Ed Nietopski. more

Hawks in third straight final
Colton Orbaker scored in the first half; then Brandon McMillion and Joel Garcia-Barczak added tallies in the second half as Holley advanced to the Class B boy's soccer championship game with a 3-0 win over Byron-Bergen. more

Hilton High School's Hockey Booster Club and alumni parents will be hosting the Rob Coppaway Alumni Game on Saturday, November 24. more

On October 13, students from Holley Karate competed in the 14th Annual American International Karate Championships held in Rochester. Over 300 students from the United States and Canada competed. more
