Spencerport resident awarded Eagle Scout rank
Richard Calabrese of Spencerport began scouting at the age of seven as a Tiger Cub in Pack #165. Through the years, he completed each rank in cub scouting and earned the highest award, the Arrow of Light. The he proceeded on through other ranks - Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star Scout and Life Scout. He was awarded the Eagle Scout rank last May. more

In a contest between 17 choruses from the Seneca Land District, which covers most of Western New York and part of Northern Pennsylvania, The Chorus of The Genesee emerged the choice of five judges by a margin of two points over the Holland Land Harmonizers from Batavia. more

Day of the Dead program at the Community Free Library
The Community Free Library will present a program featuring the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) on Wednesday, October 23 at 6:30 p.m. Denis Defibaugh will present the slide lecture "Family Ties That Do Not Die," depicting the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, Mexico. The program will also feature a paper-cutting activity for the children. more

Sweden's canal cleanup set for October 26
The Town of Sweden's Adopt-A-Trail committee will close the 2002 canal season with a cleanup "sweep" along the towpath on Saturday, October 26, according to Bill Andrews, committee chair. Members of the eight volunteer groups on the committee will meet at Harvester Park in the Village of Brockport at 9 a.m. more

Volunteers will raise wall for medical office re-creation

Voters in Orleans County can register, get absentee ballot
Absentee ballots are available for the November 5 General Election, according to the Orleans County Board of Elections. Applications for absentee ballots must be postmarked no later than October 29 if returned to the Board by mail. The last day to apply in person for an absentee ballot is November 4. more

Blue Devils rally to beat Saints
Trailing by 20 points after the first five events of the meet, the Brockport Blue Devils girl’s swimming team rebounded with first place finishes in five of the final seven events to pull out a 95-91 win over Churchville-Chili October 3. more

Cadets nearing end of first varsity year
The Hilton Cadets girl’s field hockey team is in its first year competing at the varsity level. Their record, after a 4-0 loss to Eastridge October 7, is 0-9-1. The tie was a 0-0 game against Webster Thomas. They have yet to score their first goal. It’s the equivalent of an expansion team in any sport but, according to first year varsity head coach Brenda Mashiotta, you would be hard pressed to see any depressed players in the locker room. more

Junior Donald Williams scored a goal in each period for Kendall in the 2-2 tie with Holley in boy’s soccer October 3. more

Racers run for the apples 24th time
Hilton-Parma Recreation hosted the 24th Apple Derby/Merkel 5 Mile Run on October 5 Apple Fest weekend, as 94 runners took to the certified course and produced some quality performances. Overall winner Dan Ruhnke (27:48) out distanced Todd Rogers (28:03) and Brian Emelson (28:58), while the overall female champion Gretchen Welch finished fourth. more

Rangers win second tournament
The Spencerport Rangers boy's soccer team won their second tournament of the year by beating the Brockport Blue Devils 1-0 in the finals of the Spencerport Tournament. Mike Placito scored the winning goal on a pass from Tom Graham with 23 minutes remaining in the first half. Drew Hopkins recorded his first shutout by making seven saves to give the Rangers the championship. The Rangers were led defensively by seniors Chris Cornwell, Beau Gringer, Marc Ramos, Jesse Reichert and sophomore Chris Somers. more

Youth wrestling offered in Spencerport
Boys in grades 2 through 6 can enroll in the Spencerport Youth Wrestling class that will be held on Saturdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. November 16 through January 18. The coach will be Ron Graham. more
