The Batavia Veterans Administration Medical Center has been selected as a principal class location for the Genesee Region College Tech Prep Health Careers Academy. The Health Careers Academy is a new program that provides GLOW area high school students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of health care career options while earning college credits. more

Community Free Library has new director
Clare Franek, a librarian with 10 years experience in the Monroe County Library System, is the new director of the Community Free Library in Holley. Most recently employed at Genesee Community College, Franek has also worked for the Hamlin, Seymour and Ogden libraries in Monroe County. more

Local family physician honored for
long-term service to medical association
Leon Norman Zoghlin, MD, a family physician from Hilton, was recently honored for 40 years of membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP is the national medical association representing more than 93,100 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical specialty organization devoted solely to primary care. more

Monroe County rolls out green space initiative
Monroe County's $2 million Green Space Initiative is a new local grant program which will offer financial assistance to municipalities within Monroe County seeking to acquire open space or purchase development rights. more

Sweden considers noise ordinance; public hearing Oct. 9
Sweden residents will have a chance to let the town board know their feelings regarding a proposed noise ordinance at a public hearing to be held October 9 at 7:15 p.m. at the town hall. more

Sweden hears tower proposal
Sprint PC outlined its plans to construct a 150 feet tall cell tower at 6615 Redman Road before the Sweden Town Board on September 25. The monopole would be built on land owned by Anneliese Steele. more

Politically Speaking

Chili has three way race for supervisor
Chili Supervisor Steve Hendershott, the endorsed Republican candidate, will face two challengers in the November election. In a primary day battle for the Conservative Party line, Hendershott lost out to George A. Goodwin by a vote of 83 to 50. Democrat Jason Elliotto is also a candidate for supervisor, giving Chili voters a field of three from which to choose. more

Clarkson Republicans and Conservatives make their choices
Republican and Conservative registered voters in the Town of Clarkson turned out on the Tuesday, September 25 rescheduled Primary Day and cast their votes for supervisor and town justice positions. more

Hamlin Republicans endorse incumbents
Hamlin Republicans have backed the two incumbent councilpersons for additional four year terms. Paul S. Rath received 575 votes in the Tuesday, September 25 primary and Shirley Hollink received 456 votes. more

Moy wins Republican endorsement in Clarendon
Unofficial figures in Tuesday's Republican primary in the Town of Clarendon show Richard Moy receiving 242 votes, while challenger Joyce McMurray received 82. more

Chili Lions Club makes scholarship awards
Every year during the month of June, the Lions Club of Chili presents a $400 scholarship award to members of the senior class of each of the three high schools that serves the town, based on the excellent citizenship, dedication, volunteerism and services to their schools and communities. more

Genesee Center for the Arts opens student/teacher exhibition
This October, the Genesee Center for the Arts is hosting an art exhibition called "Students and Teachers, 1931-2001: Pictures from the Collection of Robert Cooper." Robert Cooper, Assistant Professor of Photography at Genesee Community College, compiled the collection, which includes drawings and photographs, from the past 35 years. more

SUNY Empire State holds information sessions
The Genesee Valley Center of SUNY Empire State College will hold public information sessions throughout October at its location at 1475 Winton Road North, Rochester. College representatives will be on hand to answer questions about its individualized study programs which can lead to an associate or bachelor's degree. more

Taylor Elementary School hosts rescheduled Open House
Spencerport's Taylor Elementary School has rescheduled its open house for October 2. more

The Kendall Jr. Sr. High Chorus, under the direction of Nancy Pierce, took part in the "Salute to America" service at Frontier Field Sunday, September 23. Also participating were area boy and girl scouts, members of the Rochester Fire Department, and local officials. Seniors invited to attend luncheon dance
Area seniors are invited to attend the Office of the Aging's annual Autumn Luncheon Dance on Sunday, October 21 at the Mapledale Party House, 1020 Maple Street. Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. and Nice 'N Easy will perform from 1:30 to 4 p.m. more

Attica sweeps Bees
The Attica Blue Devils used a strong service game to defeat the Byron-Bergen Lady Bees 30-19, 30-19 and 30-15 in girl's volleyball on September 24. This season, a new rally scoring system is in effect meaning a point is awarded on each serve and each game is played to 30 points as long as the winning margin is two points or more. more

Churchville-Chili homecoming reaches out
Homecoming at Churchville-Chili High School this year will have a theme of "Around the World." The long homecoming weekend will begin with a bonfire on Thursday, October 4, and continue through a parade on Saturday, October 6. The hope of organizers is it will bring students, alumni and the community together. more

DEC announces release of pheasants for 2001 hunting season
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that approximately 25,000 adult pheasants will be released on lands open to public hunting for this fall's pheasant hunting season. The pheasant hunting season begins on October 1 in northern and eastern portions of New York; October 15 in central and western portions; and November 1 on Long Island. more

New youth basketball league to start
A new Saturday morning basketball program is starting soon in the Family Life Center at Pearce Memorial Church. Boys and girls in grades one through six and their parents are invited to an information meeting on Saturday, October 13, at 10 a.m. to learn more about this Christian-based program. more

Remillard leads Blue Devils
The Brockport Blue Devils gave up an early goal, then came from behind led by Stephen Remillard's three-point game, to defeat Hilton 3-2 in boys soccer on September 20. more

Saints beat Cadets on the road
The Churchville-Chili Saints won 21-7 for the first time in their 10-year high school football existence under the lights in Hilton on September 21. more

Spencerport teammates earn two awards
Spencerport teammates, running back A.J. Covella and defensive tackle Eric Reid, swept the awards for both Ontario Honda-Section V Players of the Week for both offense and defense in Class AA in Week 3. more
